I had been working as a phone interpreter for Language Select and later changed their company’s name to United Language Group for over six years and I had experienced working at the call center as an operator for a few months. When I first started with Language Select, things went well until it became United Language Group(ULG). In my perspective, they are quite poor in coordinating Interpreters and clients. 

Take this incident/complaints for examples:

I recieved a call from ULG about a complaint from a called I interpreted for Social Security Administration and the complaints are: I yelled at an old woman whom I interpreted for and the client stated that I was rude for that reason and also because I said “Oh my goodness” during the interpretation.  I did explained what happened but I feel like they keep on pressing and acusing me of yelling without trying to listen to the interpreter to really find out what really happened so we can improve our service.
What really happened? If I remembered correctly, there were two interpreters were requested before me and that dropped it, why? The old woman(non English speaker) has a bad hearing, she simply could not hear and so naturally I tried to speak louder to the point t that I feel burning in my throat and it happens all the time, and the “oh my goodness” is because of that, my throat is burning. Did I dropped the call? No I did not, did I finished the job? Yes absolutely, did the non English speaker complaint? None.

We the interpreter are like soldiers on the front line, we do all the work and then get slap in the face. We need a good rail road and well mantain in order for the train to run smoothly. Unfortunately after six years of servicing, I felt betrayed and disappointed. I didn’t care much for the money, I chose to stay for more than six years because the type of work to me is quite helpful to others and it’s a direct impact in term of helping others.  I did asked them for a raise twice after five years of service and they never response and I never ask them again.

Interpreting over the phone is quite stressful, people would yell and cursed at the interpreter, they can say mean things , people are on speaker phone and  often time place their phone a few feet away while talking and even washing dishes and demanding. 

This company offer nothing, no benefit whatsoever, none.

The company seemed to good to be true, and it was. There were so many nice faces at first. Welcoming people. Now they’ve been fired, and Californians relocated to San Antonio. They are all friends, and whatever you tell one, He’ll tell the other and will take care of only each other. Not the operators or other memebers of staff. 
The IT staff is more likely to help you out if anything. This company has been falling apart in San Antonio. They’ve fired management who wasn’t on board with their agenda on how to poorly manage. And have also taken more steps to off anyone who has any kind of say. 
The only people willing to set things straight are HR and corporate, who are rarely in the office of SATX. A bunch of young men, and I mean young, are running the show, and there is a lot of controversy and rumors going around about all of them. Be careful when applying. You’ll be fed and pampered. But once on the floor, you’re a sitting duck with a bullseye on your back. 
Kiss butt and maybe you’ll skim by. Sure it’s an easy gig, but do anything outside of their bubble and you will be met with heat. 
Also, some of the Cali boys are fixated on the girls there. As stated, they are young, so of course hormones come into play. Corporate needs to pop in more and see the nasty and vile behavior these men posses. 
A few don’t deserve the positions they hold, and better be careful. We operators are starting to notice more and are ready to go straight to Big HR with this. You have been warned.

it's really easy money to make, payment is decent. I worked overnight and basically everyone else got away with being on their phones because of favorites the liaisons would play. they were somewhat supportive but the workload at night vs daytime is 100 percent slower and employees should be allowed more options to make work bearable. Out of the 5 of us during the night we got maybe 20 calls total vs daytime which was 300 calls. Yet they wouldn't make work better for us the only good thing was the snack cart but my shift always seemed to get the raw end of the deal at that. I remember getting leftovers from events they would do during the daytime and they were all stale, and probably not safe to eat. Some advice I have for the people of ulg is to make work more interesting so the employees don't try to entertain themselves and get fired for it. Even though everyone else was on their phones and never got caught despite being close to the liaisons and the liaisons always seeing them on their phones and being ok with it when it came to me it was different. So there is DEFINITELY favoritism at this company. They kept a druggie at work even tho everyone clearly smelt his weed stench no one had anything to say about it not even the liaisons. he also got many chances after showing up intoxicated but when I get on my phone for two seconds when I haven't had a call in almost an hour to keep me awake I get instantly terminated. makes sense.

I let the company know that I am only interested in working at a certain pay. They said they cannot offer it so we initially ended the conversation as I wasn’t interested. Then hey kept calling me, and finally accepted after many phone conversations back and forth. 

This company then pushed me to sign the contract very quickly and literally begged me to work the night they signed. I noticed that they added subtle wording into the contract (night/day pay etc) that was NOT what we had discussed and agreed to with payment! They actually had me working a whole day while misleading and lying about what the pay was!!! (Can I report them anywhere? I will look into it!) 

I then asked them to put into the contract what was promised. They sent another one that was again intentionally unclear. I reminded them to spell out what times were “night” and “day” since there are multiple time zones involved with interpretation. They proceed to tell me position is filled when they hired me the day before and had me working already. 

I expect them to call me again like they did last time and beg for me to work the “night shift” at which point I will promptly hang up. They can’t be trusted and they should be reported for unethical practices.

When I first started here it was an ok place.  However when call volume increased it became horrible. They only pay $11.00 for back to back calls. They are friendly and nice until you are actually on the car floor taking calls. Clients are extremely rude but yet they expect you to suck it up and kiss up to clients. You have your breaks and lunches moved all the time are told you must ask to use the restroom and are told all the time to make it quick. Things are stolen from your desk all the time and no one seems to care when it is reported. They play favorites and gossip and read through employee emails all the time and gossip to anyone who will listen. Call center manager is a control freak and plays favorites you cannot confide in anyone due to most of the managers being her minions. Place is always dirty never clean bugs have been seen on several occasions. I highly doubt corporate truly knows what goes on around here. Upper management walks around noses in the air and treat you like if you approach them for anything they are going to catch something from just speaking to you. Once again stay far away from this place do not be fooled buy the fake friendly faces it is not worth your time or stress.

For several years I had good work experience with ULG, being among their qualified OP interpreters with very satisfactory client feedback, when suddenly I was laid  off,  without an advance notice. My accounts  were deactivated during my lunch break, and I was informed through an  emotionless  e-mail about a sudden change to ULG’s staffing modals and a decision to no longer contract directly with interpreters yet through a network of preferred organizations which contradicts reality, while for several months I continued receiving emails from the Liaison team asking to log in to assist with rush calls  in my languages with SSA. It was obvious, this action was taken against me, probably because they regretted to approve on my request  a pay rate increase after several years of dedicated work or another reason I am not aware of. 
Anyways, my experience and qualifications led me to other opportunities to continue providing very satisfactory interpretation services to LEPs through other companies who know how to value their interpreters.


I’ve only been working here for a few weeks and it’s been pretty terrible. I’m a Spanish interpreter and I was originally told the demand for Spanish interpreters was really high and they needed help with calls. Well you can spend 5-8 hours on the platform and expect about 5 or 6 calls between 1-20 minutes and they pay per minute. You cannot make a living with this job. So I will have to look for another job. They also say they will pay you between the 15th-20th of each month and it’s the 23rd and I still have yet to receive my first payment. I contacted someone in regards to payment on the 21st and as expected there was an excuse as to why no payment was provided by said dates, which was they were experiencing problems this month but this was the first time they’ve experienced this problem in the multiple years they’ve worked with the company. Essentially I’ve been working for free as I still have not received anything. 

This place is so great overall. I had never worked in call center before and in fact I said I’d sell my soul before I did this. Well I did it and ended up loving up. The management here is so nice and so helpful. It’s so easy to get promoted within the company and I LOVE what I do. I’ve never had any manager speak so nicely of me until I worked here. They will literally help you succeed. What manager does that?! This place feels like home and you get to work from home. Not everyone lasts here and that’s okay, it’s not for everyone. There is a high call volume and there is low volume days. It’s a job so either way you have to work. They are strict about breaks and taking them at the right time. I would say the only hard part about being an operator is the call volume and having to meet metrics. But it’s still super easy. They hire within which I like. It only took me 4 months to get a promotion. I have nothing bad to say about this place. This is a great place to work for. The only thing I will say is I wish the pay was better BUT I can see why I get paid the way I do. 

After working there almost 5 years I was able to notice several problems. The main ones were lack of communication, disorganization, faulty system and for PR employees the pay rate is too low. There were times where if I had an issue of some sort I would try to get in touch with someone to help me and no one could direct me to the right person. There were problems with their system that routes calls to the interpreters and it would make a lot of calls drop and they kept blaming the interpreters and fired MANY interpreters at once because of it and some of them asked for a second chance and were rehired but the problem obviously continued. Also they pay monthly but if the pay date fell on a weekend or a holiday the deposit would get delayed for some reason. It was very inconvenient and inconsiderate on their part not to deposit it earlier so we could still get it in time. Not sure if any of the issues I've mentioned have been fixed but I hope so. 

Poor communication from management.  Lack of direction, lack of training, lack of expectations given to new employees. For example, I don't know if or when I have a review, I don't know where to turn if I have questions.  Whatever I've learned, I have learned because I have asked and asked (often going through 2-3 people before I reach someone who can help). I don't know if they like the job I'm doing or not. I really know very little about the company.  I really enjoy the job, but I never know from one day to the next what kind of calls I will be getting (it changes without warning) and while I appreciate variety, it would be nice to know so that I can prepare. I've also changed supervisors and wasn't even told.  No positive feedback, no feedback at all.
