I only spent a little over a year with the facility and tried to make it work the best I could for the sake of the paid retirement. However, once I vaguely mentioned wanting to seek out career advancement in the facility because I was planning on returning to school for a higher degree, suddenly the already very rude (unless you have been with hospital for at least 10 years) , suddenly turned vicious. Nobody would help me when I needed it and my Manager became cold and distant. I actually overheard staff (including Charge Nurse) saying derogatory and childish things about me. Some of the same people who were nice and pretending to be my friend were actually stabbing me in the back and they were all mocking the idea of going back to school to get a higher degree. (i.e. "why bother...if you kiss up to the Manager enough, she'll make sure you don't even need a degree at all for the position, hahahaha...why waste they time and money".  I also had a friend that started about 6 months before me in a different department that applied for a manager position (which she was well qualified for), but it was re-classified as a training spot for a person who had almost no nursing experience at all (also lower degree) and my friend had 15 years (plus higher degree). Also extremely racist staff. The large majority of nursing staff throughout the facility are Filipino, and the remaining portion, about 5% are the rest of the population. They never follow "hospital policy" and speak English. A lot of the staff spend a lot of time goofing off and behaving like kids ("long timers"), ignoring call lights. While the newbies  carry the work load. If you bring it to the attention of the "long timer" Charge nurse she just becomes nasty and says something to her friends in Filipino, then punishes you with more admissions the everyone else. The same behavior goes for the Manager.I would say if you are a new grad and haven't yet experienced the life of a normal hospital that actually supports education (including with their requirements for management jobs-most now days require a completed Masters degree (not just starting the program) not an ASN or BSN) and haven't gotten to yet enjoy the life of being respected (or ethical leadership), OR  go to UMC and you can be trained into their "gang" mentality.  Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it because that "paid retirement" you will get someday will all go to either psychologist from going nuts or attorney fee's for going to jail for smacking some rude/lazy/under educated/trained Charge nurse. It has a lot of potential since it is a teaching hospital, it is just going to waste because of very poor leadership in place. They DEFINITELY have leaders, the problem is they are leading the staff in the wrong direction and all stuck in their bad ways. FYI-three other (experienced)  nurses I know have since tried it out regardless of my warning, experienced the same thing, and left just like me.

Working as a patient attendant (sitter) at UMC for the last 2 and 1/2 years has allowed me to gain a great insight into the medical field. I have been able to observe nursing skills and patient - nurse interactions without intruding. I have also gain an insight into which field / unit I would like to work in as an RN. Being a sitter, I have has the opportunity to sit with all types of patients, including pediatric patients. I have also seen how nurse act with psychiatric and non-psychiatric patients, and have come to the conclusion that I would not like to work with psychiatric patients, since I have seen how after a certain amount of time, the nurse change how they interact with these patients. The hardest part of this job is having to watch patients who do not want to be watch and knowing I now have the skills to help these patients, but unfortunately I can't. The most enjoyable part of the job is helping some of the patients, for example one patient who had a stroke was learning to speak again. We sat for at least half an hour if not more learning the letters, ABCDE. Although this is not part of my job duties, it felt good being able to do something so simple, and the patient was happy that someone took time to help her with this simple task. Overall, being a sitter was a great job when I was studying for my RN degree, since it allowed me to work and have some study time and also they worked with me on my schedule.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Best part is so many holidays off in the IT and EHR Department. PERS Retirement Benefits and a huge cafeteria to buy food if you don't want to drive somewhere for food.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Most Stressful part was not having any backup or help based off my position. Due to the lack of pay offerred, no candidate would accept the offer as the pay is half of what you can make externally. Therefore, with projects, maintenenace and break fixes it was very pressing and stressful being the sole person in the position.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work Environment is very TOXIC.
Too much favoritism and Sexism
If your not one of the CIO Favorites, your not getting that promotion. Too much staff minding other staffs business. Management is limited to doing anything due to the staff being under union. It's a cery depressing and degrading environment. Also too many employees that try to throw co workers under the bus rather than helping each other as a team.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Way too many meetings, a ton of issues due to the OLD Software and Applications used. Since its county, everything has to go through the Board to see if there's any funds to do any upgrades even though it's a huge negative impact on the patient side.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Benefits. They are part of the county system, so you get county benefits. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Unreasonable expectations. During the 3 plus years I was there, I tried to address the issue of not getting breaks. They have absolutely no way of tracking nor do they care if you get a morning or afternoon break. They have no desk nurse. You are literally expected to take care of up to 26 primary care patients in a day, do your "own" prior auths, manage the message boxes of 1 to 3 providers including results, refills and more while doing patient care. If you complain, it is a problem. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unreasonable expectations with minimal compensation. Very little recourse to have ANY problems addressed. If you try to address a problem thru your chain of command, you will have a letter to file or actual write up very shortly. Trying to address a problem is treated as an attack on the organization, and that is against policy. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Maximum effort for 5 hours, lunch, maximum effort for 4.5 hours while stressing that you might have to clock out late and get in trouble.

A typical day would be organizing work including presenting slides and paperwork to three pathologists, answering and screening phone calls, typing of various correspondence.
I learned how to effectively communicate with other coworkers including other physicians within the Department and work as a great team.
My management supported my decisions for new ways to make the job more organized and easier.
My coworkers treated me like family and provided a great team environment in which to work.
The hardest part of the job was trying to manage the computer systems when they went down and try to effectively manage the paperwork until the computers were back up and functioning.
The most enjoyable part of the job was being a part of a fantastic team dedicated to the most important person we served, that is the patient and making them feel important and well cared for at all times.

I worked varied shifts.  I worked 36 hrs pediatrics and 24 hrs adult. The Pediatric Emergency Department had a large population of Hispanic people in which I learned to communicate with them rapidly rather than waiting for interpreter to quickly assess their child while awaiting interpreter services. In the adult ER we had a large indigent population contributed by a lack of mental health / social services in the area. These things contributed to the stressful job. I believe my military service helped me to adjust to the Emergency Departments tempo and varied personalities you come in contact with.  I enjoyed my time at UMC though it was a volatile at times as there were many changes in department and corporate leadership. I believe the job is what you make of it. You can fight with everyone or you can find a way to march on and get along.

UMC is the only level 1 trauma center in the state of Nevada and the only free standing Level One Center west of the Mississippi. There are 24 hour/day seven day/week coverage for adult and pediatric trauma patients. UMC also has outstanding surgical services for transplant and burns as well as CV and a host of other tertiary care center services. They are well on the way to Magnet status. 

RNs at UMC get the opportunity to work with physicians and residents in a world class learning environment to hone their skills in a multititude of areas. This all they while earning a public employees retirement at a full 28% of their salary for which they are fully vested after 5 short years.

I’ve worked in the Business Office for years now it can be a decent place to work however upper management (the director) is very rude and unprofessional! Everyone knows it but does nothing about it probably out of fear of losing their job. Then you have the management that we must report to and most of them are also very unprofessional as well. They all abuse their authority and use the majority of the day socializing with the exception of one. The focus in my department is bringing in the money but unlike the private sector we do not receive bonuses when we make goal. From what I’ve heard upper management gets the bonus but what did they do to get the goal? They don’t put the work in. We already don’t get paid what we truly deserve. Only those who have been there 10+ are making good money.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Pension and government benefits. Other than that, worst run IT department I’ve ever had experience with, lasted 2 years and not sure how I managed that 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Horrible and uneducated leadership, from the top down incompetent people. Outdated equipment and unlicensed software 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Things constantly broken or misconfigured, management not interested in the nuts and bolts only running elbows with the C-Suite group 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Constant badgering from management about broken equipment, running constantly and located in a sketchy part of town, multiple building to support and dealing with homeless people on the streets

A typical day at work would include shadowing Associate Administrators doing rounds, attending meetings, and working on projects in the hospital.  I learned about how management in a hospital can make a difference in the entire hospital culture.  The way that UMC administration works as a team is very impressive.  There are many responsibilities on each persons plate, but they do not walk around with glum faces, rather they are always smiling and willing to help anyone in need including patients and other employees.  I think that the hardest part of the job, for myself as an intern, was that I was untrained in areas that I wanted to contribute to.  Instead I listened and learned from the experts.  The most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with the employees and experiencing the culture at UMC.
