They discriminate against certain types of people (and not in the MSM way you think).   They do not treat adjuncts with respect .  You may have taught a class for years, written the textbook for the class , and received rave reviews from students. They will remove you from the class, without even a phone call or an email if they need to give the position to one of their preferred people. Expect to be paid approximately 25% of what a University  of Maryland employee doing exactly the same job  is paid, without any benefits or retirement consideration, even if you work there for many years. You need to love teaching for the sake of teaching to work here . Your efforts will not be acknowledged by full time academic staff. You can be replaced at any time, without notice, regardless of job performance. You will be on a separate contingent "tier". 

As tutoring largely occurred in short bursts throughout the week, the typical day at work consisted of, at most, 4 hours in the Writing Center tutoring various students on written assignments they needed to either complete or revise, including essays, projects, applications, etc. I learned a great deal about how other people choose to write and ways I could help them in editing their work in a constructive, efficient manner, and became increasingly skilled at this as I stayed with the position. Workplace culture was excellent, as all tutors were friendly with each other and always ready to help if needed. The only really "hard" part of the job was swinging a decent paycheck out of it, as hours were limited due to the sheer volume of available tutors in contrast to limited tutor spaces and hours in the Writing Center each week. However, overall all other aspects of the job were quite enjoyable, and thus made me feel extremely satisfied by the time I finished my time in the position.

It was an okay place to work. UMBC is full of perfectly nice people, many of whom are a joy to work with. The students are also relatively agreeable and knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics. 

Although issues connected to racial/gender inequity (both in and outside of the classroom), staff/faculty burnout, and undesirable pay had been consistently raised, there was little substantial and transformative change on an institutional level, save initiatives that went on to die or be slowed down in various committees.

Not until the pandemic was there real consideration and reflection about how some of these outdated policies and practices might be negatively impacting students, staff, or faculty, which were only exacerbated by the transition to virtual work/learning. Many staff elected to depart at this time, often citing the flexibility, higher wages, and work-life balance of opportunities in the private sector as key factors for their departure.


I worked in the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program with exceptional students who came to UMBC while still in high school (seniors) to take advantage of a college experience prior to graduating. These young people came with high SAT's and some of them already worked for NASA. It was a most rewarding experience to see so many young people with the kinds of minds that these young people possessed.  The office staff was made up of professionals in varied fields of study with degrees primarily at the doctorate level.  The Program was designed to teach the students the importance of team work, among other things, as they worked their way through what was known as "Junction Bridge."  The hardest part of the job was saying good bye to the students when the summer program was over.

My experience working at UMBC was wonderful. I worked in the finance office with a supportive staff of professionals who worked together well. I worked part time as an administrative assistant, and my job included data entry. I learned a lot about finances and how they affected the offices at the college. The management was helpful in making sure we had the tools needed to perform our jobs at a high level. My main concern working at UMBC was the language used, both in a college environment and general English. I am originally from Japan so I thought the language would be much higher than what I am use to hearing. That changed throughout my time there. The workers were easy-going and the processes that I used were smooth and easy to understand, with only a few issues from time to time. I enjoyed my time with co-workers, the work and the laughs we shared. I miss it dearly.

In the University of Maryland Baltimore County I worked as a teaching assistant in two mechanical engineering courses for undergraduate students. In the first laboratory course I instructed students on mechanics of materials theories and behavior of materials with emphasis on engineering materials. In the second course I worked as the grader for the mechanical vibrations course and had open office hours for student to come ask questions regarding any assignment or theory learned during lectures. 
The laboratory course I instructed involved the research area I was active in during my year as a  graduate student at UMBC, this helped me to transfer more knowledge of the practical and experimental side of engineering materials to the undergraduate students.

There are a variety of tasks that Student Assistants are responsible for completing, and each day you are assigned to do a few different things. This promotes productivity, without getting lulled into a robotic routine. 
Most importantly, I learned customer service through walk in visitors and phone calls with customers. I learned data entry in Peoplesoft. I also learned how to open mail, as well as sort, scan, and file documents. 
I work with a student staff and a professional staff, all who are friendly. The management understands that student-workers are students first, then workers, so they try to be as flexible as reasonably and professionally possible. 
What is hard is difficult customers, but that happens in any customer service position. 
What is enjoyable is being able to share a student's excitement when they are admitted.

If you are a UMBC undergrad, then this is a wonderful place to work. The managers understand that your school life comes before work, and will work with you to take time off for exams or studying. 

This job is somewhat physically demanding, but the heaviest thing you'll have to carry is about 20 pounds. Not that bad in my opinion. The real challenge is how awkward some of the other things are to carry. 

However my favorite part of the job was the work environment. I graduated but I'm still friends with a lot of my former coworkers and one old supervisor. The managers are open to questions and suggestions on how to do things.

On typical days I would work on projects that my supervisor needs done. Such as, creating flyers or excel spread sheets. Sometimes help the staff around the office with their computer issues the IT department is not available right away. I was also the staff that sat at the front desk taking appointments for students to be advised. I learned how to give great customer service through this position. The management was good, we typically had weekly meetings. Co-workers were sometimes unreliable depending on who it is, to show up to their shift on time. The hardest part of the job was when I my supervisor was not available and I was not able to answer the questions of the people who came in to the office. My favorite part of the job was being able to walk to other offices.

All academic institutions claim not to discriminate on the basis of race, age, or gender, to which I say "ha," "ha," and "ha." 

It is also difficult to assess any place of employment where jobs are vastly different. As in most colleges and universities, a tenure-track teacher has good pay, benefits, and funded opportunities to write and pursue research through substantial grants, awards, and sabbaticals. 

On the other hand, an adjunct teacher has low pay, no benefits, and little academic or financial support; also, no voice, no office, and little peer respect.
