Let me give it to you straight: working on the psychiatric unit at UMMS Midtown wasn't just a job, it was a miserable experience. It was the kind that makes you question your life choices and regret even applying for the job.

The management? Picture this: a group of terrible and unprofessional people who've mastered the art of corporate jargon but are completely lost regarding actual leadership. Watching them try to navigate anything complex was like watching a reality show – entertaining, sure, but also deeply concerning. They are absolutely pathetic.

And HR. They operated on a "management-first" policy. If you weren't in upper management, you were pretty much invisible. Raising concerns? Prepare to be met with the kind of silence that makes you wonder if your emails even went through. They were great at sending out those cheery company-wide announcements, though! So, there's that.

The "Good":

•You'll develop a survival instinct due to dealing with patients and management and not being able to tell the difference.
•You'll learn to rely on yourself because help is a rare commodity.
•You'll gain a dark sense of humor, which is essential for getting through the day.

Management redefined "incompetence" and provided new examples of how to be worse everyday. I cannot stress that enough.

The management and HR will also provide you with soul-crushing feeling of being completely undervalued and unheard.

To the VPs of HR and all upper management who I sought help from: 
Please, invest in some serious leadership development. And for once, try listening to the people who actually make the unit run. We have valuable insights and deserve respect. 

In conclusion, if you're seeking a workplace where you're seen, heard, and valued, run. Run far, far away. This place is not good for your career, your well-being, or your faith in humanity.

The department I was under only spoke to patients, doctors offices, and health insurance via phone, except if you were assigned at the Hospital’s cancer center than you would speak to both the patients and doctors/nurses. I started my training initially at the their cancer center and did great until I had a disagreement with one of the doctors. I was removed and did additional training, but that did not solve the issue: A patient misunderstood the message I left regarding their ‘next appt’ & insurance. Instead of calling back for clarity the patient spoke with the doctor and got even more upset once they left his office that day. The doctor and his nurse burst into my office so quickly that my office mate thought there was an attack under way. The nurse did all the yelling and the doctor did nothing, but give me an intimidating look. I spoke as clearly as they could understand that I called the the patient in regards to his next appt. and that his insurance needed few additional paperwork. This went to the director and instead of receiving a heartfelt sorry for creating the disrespect or the wrongdoing put towards me, I was removed. This is an ongoing issue with this company and furthermore the region drags their feet for any necessary improvements for the area. It’s a good place to work if you are from the area, but if you are not, have traveled and understand the world a bit better beyond borders, it will wear you down to eventually leading to being fired, desperately asking for a transfer to Baltimore (MD), or quitting for a better job.

It took me most of my working career to finally find a position that is an exact fit, at the exact time that was mutually beneficial. I have been doing payroll tax compliance for over 20 years. It is sometimes hard to find a company that A. does tax work in house and B. Values the experience of an older worker. UMMS was just such a company that needed a skilled and dedicated person to manage the payroll tax compliance piece of the payment function. The Director who interviewed me was an "Experienced" worker himself so we both were on the same page from Day 1. to be frank, sometimes when an older worker interviews with a much younger manager, the manager tends (at times) to shut down and stop listening. This sends a message that Hey your experience and skill do not fit in with my view of how the work gets done. This was NOT the case at UMMS. there are a number of older more experienced workers and we all seem to be on the same page much of the time.

Compensation and PTO accrual look competitive on paper, but day-to-day culture makes the role unsustainable. After-hours communication (late-night emails, weekend texts) is common and often paired with next-morning deadlines. Meetings are frequently scheduled without checking availability, starting as early as 7am and running past 6–7pm. Even during approved PTO, employees can be added to meetings or asked to deliver work.

Operationally, it often feels like working inside a vendor/outsourced consulting model embedded in a health system—always-on expectations, reactive timelines, and a ticket-factory vibe. Management can be rude and boundaryless, treating staff like an on-call vendor rather than employees with protected off-hours. Instead of planning and ownership, work arrives via informal channels with shifting priorities and little lead time. If you flag capacity constraints, the focus can shift to “what time did you start work?” rather than re-prioritizing scope. Teams can feel siloed, with clique dynamics that complicate cross-functional work. 

When I interviewed for this position, I was genuinely excited, believing I was entering a workplace that was warm, welcoming, inspiring, and community-focused. However, I was promised a variety of responsibilities that turned out to be completely untrue. The supervisor of ambulatory services was the most difficult supervisor I have ever encountered—truly the worst! The high turnover rate is largely due to her management style. Employees' voices go unheard, she lacks humility, and often presents a "my way or the highway" and "know-it-all" attitude. This department would greatly improve if management were more supportive, open to learning, and sincere. The saying "iron sharpens iron" applies here, and she could certainly benefit from that perspective, as the management overall lacks genuine leadership. Despite these challenges, I enjoyed my time at the University of Maryland, but one difficult supervisor can significantly impact your overall experience.

The job is differently an eye opener. Working here had it has its ups and downs but I actually enjoyed working here until I was pregnant. Further along in my pregnancy I requested an accommodation that did not get honored before I went on leave. As I was informed it was not acknowledged/considered till after my final day at work. And it wouldn’t have been possible since it would come off as “favoritism”. Due to my health issues I couldn’t work much longer as I hoped. After my leave I was hoping to work again but with the new adjustment I was not comfortable returning to work where I could be possibly responsible for someone else health. There was no support or consideration from upper management nor HR in regards to my situations. As a pregnant woman I deserved much better treatment. I really put in my best effort to keep the same work ethic as I had before my pregnancy. To work in a healthcare environment I would’ve thought treatment during that time would have been better.

I’ve had a positive experience working here overall. The company fosters a supportive and collaborative environment, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and professional development. Management is generally approachable and open to feedback, which helps build trust and transparency across departments.

One of the biggest strengths is the culture — it's inclusive, respectful, and people genuinely care about each other. There's a good balance between structure and flexibility, and the work-life balance is mostly respected, which I really appreciate.

That said, there are a few areas that could be improved. Some internal processes feel outdated and can slow things down unnecessarily. Additionally, while there are opportunities for growth, clearer communication around career progression and long-term development plans would make a big difference.

Overall, it’s a great place to work with a strong foundation, and with a few tweaks, it could easily be a 5-star experience.

Very busy Family Medicine, Specialty and Urgent Care Clinic. Providers, staff and most patients were my favorite aspect of the position. Responsibilities and expectations were unrealistic for one nurse. The environment was very stressful, had a high turn over rate (28 employees including the medical director and practice administrator over the course of a 2.5 year period). On-site management team was less than desirable with no clinical background or true knowledge of health care administration. Support from on-site leadership was extremely poor and limited at best. Off site leadership was scarce and stretched precariously too thin but when available or around they were very supportive, encouraging and accommodating.

Benefits, vacation time, break times, PTO and pay were extremely fair. 

I would have remained employed with the company  and would even return if they cleaned house and hired a better leadership team.



I first interviewed at Umms in 2012 and was the first runner up for a vacant payroll tax position. So i moved on. In 2016, A recruiter called me and asked if I was still interested in that position as the incumbent had retired. so I re interviewed and after several months of back and forth I finally got a job offer first as a contractor. Once My supervisor realized that  I brought a high level of experience to the position, they made a job offer on June 6, 2016.I understood the job but soon realized that the software program was inadequate, and also realized that communication was a critical problem within the health system. Despite all of that, i persisted now for over three years. Still have issues with the same things, software and communication, but in the end I feel that my work is valued and as a colleague recently put it. NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO DO WHAT YOU DO so there is some security in that fact which in my experience I have found to be true.

Management was the best, and focused on providing everyone with training to fit their position. They chose some of the brightest people in the organization to become presenters. The PowerPoint slides along with the training materials, gave you a sense of clarity as to your role, and clearly pointed out the organizational objectives. This was probably the first job that made me feel as though I was a part of a real team environment. The workplace culture was full of integrity, with respectful and honest employees. If you did something incorrect, they would find you a mentor buddy to shadow until you were trained well. Everyone was very helpful and didn't throw the new employees under the bus like most office jobs today. A real team player environment.
