I HAVE NEVER worked for such a poor structured department in my entire career!! Management is a complete joke starting from the charge nurse to the Associate Director. These individuals lack professional skills, respect for employees, communication and knowledge. They do not teach their employees to work as a team which is sad because things would run smoothly if people were taught this from the time they started. You know that saying "it's not what you know but who you know?" This is truly the case in this department. I've seen employees being promoted to leadership positions based on their brown nosing abilities rather than merit. I see people go days or a week without actually doing any work!  The management runs this place like a mafia if your not apart of the family or disagree you will be dealt with... Literally dealt with. You become a target and a victim of harassment and bullying. Besides a few surgical Technicians that came with experience the others have no real skill. They have staff that can't understand English for Pete's sake and technicians that have thrown away specimens!! You heard right. Training new hires is done Soo poorly many of the young inexperience techs take this opportunity to use them to do their work for the day and just collect the preceptor pay for the day. Equipment is horrible, I've had wheels fall off as I'm trying to move my back table. Trays are limited and so are supplies and of course no one informs you ahead of time what's on back order. Weekly meetings are pointless they never give you useful information or teach you anything worth knowing just wasteful Tech 101 knowledge as far as I'm concerned. People actually eat the clock here! Yeah you heard right you can come here and just eat the clock no one will say a word. The turnover here is ridiculous and that's never a good sign. The sad part is I don't think things here will ever change. I see people come in as new hires and expecting a lot because it's the University of Miami. Let me be the first to tell you that it's close to working in a third world country! Soo... If your a slacker with no real skill and can kiss up like nobody's business this is the place for you. If your a real professional that takes pride in your work steer clear from this place!! Worst experience and decision of my life!!!!

The University of Miami is a great place to work for the benefits but compensation is poor, UM believes their benefits more than makeup for their low pay. Additionally, career and compensation growth here is limited and capped. For example HR/Compensation will tell you that a "promotion" is limited to a max of 8% salary increase and unless you have a faculty member (not even supervisor) willing to fight for you that is the MAX you will get -  if you're lucky. Career advancement is usually stifled, even if you have the experience, knowledge and ability. What ends up occurring is that a person who's been with UM for 10+ years and has retained a vast amount of knowledge in internal applications, software, processed etc. will be compensated a lot less than an external hire with zero UM knowledge or experience. That's another reason why UM has a terrible retention rate.

On another note, Executive leadership has been extremely rocky in the last couple years, there is a lot of fast-pace change causing turmoil and job insecurity every where on campus. Workplace culture is very much an "us vs. them" mentality (staff vs. faculty and visa versa). 

The hardest part of working here is definitely the culture and the lack of support staff received from leadership and central offices whose sole purpose is to protect staff against tyrant faculty and leadership. There is an obvious lack of transparency and retaliation by faculty on staff. And the pay is awful in comparison to outside entities and industry. 

The enjoyable part of working at UM are the benefits and perks. The health and dental insurance are pretty great, free eye annual exam, and free tuition for employees (probably the best perk if you want to advance in your career by enrolling in classes). Additional we get side perks like free tickets to Marlin and UM Football games, a great access to free lectures and learning modules plus work/life balance classes like chair yoga, breathing techniques, meditation, etc.

The job is very rewarding , my peers are great  tEnsures that randomization and registration of patients are performed in compliance with CRS and UM policies, the protocol, ICH-GCP, and federal regulations.
Establishes and maintains contact with patients/participants, health care providers, community agencies, study sponsors.  Updates appropriate agencies such as sponsors, IRB, etc. regarding current status of research projects as required and under the supervision of the PI.

Updates SCCC Business Office staff as requested about patient accruals/completed cycles for billing of Industry Studies and for calculation of RVUs for in-house studies and provides support with study related procedures as required, i.e., EKG, laboratory and tumor assessment studies.

Ensures timely IRB submissions of initial protocol, continuing reports, amendments, IND safety reports, AEs, SAEs, UP, deviations, etc. with support from the Sr. Regulatory Specialist.

Communicates all IRB and Sponsor related approvals, changes, information, etc. to the PI and study team and adapts to physician schedules to perform protocol specific patient visits and/or procedures including, but not limited to early AM and /or early evening hours as required.

Participates in a collaborative, empowered work environment as demonstrated through teamwork and ensures work environment is organized and functions efficiently. 
    Demonstrates a level of professional practice that supports the delivery of appropriate care and    positive working relationships throughout the medical center and provides coverage for other CRS SDGs as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

A typical day at work I would round throughout the floors 2-3 times in the morning and then in the afternoon. I complete my administrative duties while managing my clinics. Replying to 100+ emails while monitoring the volume of patients, also dealing with any patient or departmental issues. The most enjoyable part of my job are the patients. The patients really touch your heart. Working around cancer patients you start to develop a relationship with these sick patients. It is a double edge sword. While you build a loving and caring relationship with these patients, you also witness losing them. The hardest part of the job is not being compensated for the amount of work you are responsible. Not only do I have 12+ employees in a hospital setting to monitor, I also am held accountable too three separate metrics that other supervisors in other facilities are not responsible for. At times it could be frustrating and a little demoralizing but my manager and coworkers make me love the job that I do.

	Served as financial administrative officer in the absence of the Project Director. 
	Monitored project revenues and expenses for cost effectiveness of the project for restricted and unrestricted budgets. 
	Coordinated with Senior Project Counselor in data entry and submission of the Annual Performance Report, project staff time and labor for employee compensation.
	Handle confidential operating and financial information; maintain project records and minutes. 
	Functions as liaison between vice-presidents, directors, supervisors, professional staff, department head, other departments, and outside agencies, gathering and relying information as needed. 
	Performed other related duties as required. Committed to providing the highest levels of customer service. 
	Established strong record in developing best practices for administrative support. Proactively provide support, looking beyond immediate need to maximize effectiveness.


I worked in one of the on-going University survey programs, backed up by the NIH. UM basically studied the relation between blood pressure and dementia and how it was influenced by a community's diet and life style. The Patient Clinical Assistants' role were to detect early signs of dementia in certain communities of Miami.

Once dementia tested as a possibility by the Patient Clinical Assistant, UM further tested the elderly participant in the UM facilities. 

As the specific type of dementia was detected early on, the patient and family could either manage dementia or Alzheimer's. Support help was offered to the families.Treating the particular type of dementia early on was crucial in preventing  the latter stages of this challenging brain disease.

A typical may start of slow or rushed, depending on the patient acuities. I learn that I need to listen to my patients because they know themselves better than I do and can guide care. My coworkers are a unique group, who I'm proud to work with daily, they can be counted on the lend a hand if your overwhelmed with assignments and to top it off, they are one of the most funniest entertaining groups I've ever worked with, the keep me laughing through out the day. This is good for the body and mine. The hardest part of the day is when treatment is delayed for whatever reasons. Both patients and staff alike get frustrated. The most enjoyable part of the my job is the feeling of satisfaction I get when I am able to help my patients get through their treatment safely and effectively and the voice this to me, or come back and to let me know how they are doing after going into remission from their illness.

The University of Miami is THE place to work. I cannot say enough  how much I matured both professionally and personally in my roles at the "U". By the time I left, however, the employment climate was very unsteady and lay offs were pending. One must act in ones best interest and I choose to leave. 

This position required that you be willing to work outside the scope of your job requirement. While entirely wiling to do this, I felt that some policies and procedures needed to be updated to further define the role itself. For example, as an advocate and not clinical staff, I felt that it was unnecessary for us to respond to code blue emergencies. 

The most enjoyable part of this job was watching our patients feel that we were making their day at the cancer center so much easier with just a touch of empathy and assisting them in navigating the health system.

This is not about the University, it is about Dermatology and its triage department. I warn everybody not to work there. There is a couple of women who have been empowered by someone in upper management. They have deliberately decided to make it very hard to their direct supervisor and new hires. They refuse to train, spend their time out of the office in every cafeteria, and spread gossip and poison. They openly enjoy seeing you lost and play this dirty game until you quit because they have done it several times before. You will find yourself with a job you do not know what and how to do it. Be ready for phone calls full of complaints, facing customers demanding answers you do not have thanks to your coworkers, and a computer system that it is not impossible to learn but without training is like reading japanese. The office personnel pays attention to your calvary. Everyone knows what it is going on. If one of them likes you, he/she will try to help but do not expect to succeed

I normally there by 7:30am, I anticipate a 12 hour day. Every day is a welcoming challenge, no two days are the same, I consider myself "a Jack of trades", I have been there too long, I have gone through 6 CEO's and 3 organization changes. 

Everyone in the hospital and the health system knows me or have heard of me, they know I am the one to turn too when something is needed. I work well with all the departments and employees, people do things for me because they want to not, because they have too.

I am considered the people person, no task to big nor to small. I run key patient service departments but work closely with nursing. The hardest part of my job is not dividing myself into equal parts so I can take care of more issues and the most enjoyable part is making a difference in someone's life. 

In the end I get the job done, the results are always positive, no matter how long it takes me.
