I worked as an RN Coordinator in a hospital-based clinic on the University grounds.  The work was mentally stimulating, and colleagues and patients were a positive part of the job. The work-life balance was more than I had bargained for, and I was regularly working much longer than the stated expectation just to get necessities done. I felt that we were spread much too thin regarding our team duties. Despite working with my manager about this problem, I grew to feel that things were not going to change anytime in the near or distant future, and I eventually made a decision to leave.  This was disappointing because I felt that I was making a positive contribution to my patients, and I was learning much, but my family was paying too high of a price and I was increasingly exhausted. Additionally, as a new employee, I was on an extremely long wait list to get a contract parking spot (which still would have cost $75+ a month),. and my spot was years off; therefore, I walked about 3/4 of a mile from a remote parking lot into work each day which still cost just as much.  The exercise was fine, but this only added to an already long work day.  Even though a nice FTO package was included in my employment, it was difficult to prepare to take time off. The clinic had collaborative work spaces to promote a paperless environment so one didn't ever really know where you might sit each day or if there would even be a spot available.  I often went to other areas of the building to set up my work space for a portion or all of the day.

I have worked within the University of Minnesota Physicians both at the University campus and currently at Maple Grove. Maple Grove has been by far a better place to work, the staff and providers are great. UMP's benefits are some of the best I have had in various healthcare systems- 401K they give 2% and then match up to 6 %, pay is good for being in a clinic setting, PTO is ok but you have to use it for everything including holidays. In a hourly position you are micromanaged to the min of your time, unable to leave early or have any overtime. Their exempt status is ridiculous, definitely not a true "salary" position. If you need to be late or leave early for an appointment you have to use 4 hrs of PTO. There is no flexibility for flex start or end times, 8-5 pm is all you get. They scold you for being even minutes late; regardless of working through lunch, staying late or coming in early other days. Management will talk to you about your absents and late time, but then they come in late, leave early, "work remotely", or call in sick multiple times per week. They definitely do not practice what they preach to everyone else. Once people get on their radar, they will find minuscule reasons to write you up and eventually terminate you.
At Maple Grove, the providers want the staff to be up to the University standards, but there is no training, connection or continued learning opportunities to become that. It is like 2 separate healthcare systems, but try to act as one.

Not an impressive place if you're working in a remote patient intake role. Various departments are understaffed so you receive little to no feedback and there often isn't anyone available to answer new hire's questions during peak times, which is when you will have the most questions. You will be told to give patients specific time frames even though those time frames are not realistic (e.g "Someone will get back to you within 2-3 business days." They won't hear from anyone for weeks.) Clinic will leave voicemail for patients without saying who called or why they called & nothing will be noted in the patient's chart so when the patient calls back you have no clue what they need; it is often a guessing game. You will be told to rely on your protocols but protocols are not updated as changes get made so as a new hire you are often left with no resources to help patients. Be prepared for a lot of unhappy patients who complain about how the system works and who demand to know why they haven't gotten a response and be prepared to give them a b.s. response to save face for the organization. Major delays in care and clinics canceling patient appointments and rescheduling months in the future are regular occurrences that patients will be unhappy about and they will call you asking why but you won't have the answers. 

OK reviewers I've noticed several errors with your personal reviews. First of all Fairview and U of M physicians are 2 different companies which work hand and hand. Majority of the PWB clinics are Fairview owned but house U of M physicians employees. Also U of M physician doctors see patients within the fairview hospital on inpatient units. That's where UMP has the billing relations with Fairview. But anyway this company has really nice employees but beware if the managers and HR department. The managers can treat employees anyway they want and if you dare report it look out for retaliation!!!! Also be ready to choose your clique if not you will be the target of mayhem! !!! Also they are especially known for seriously mistreating African American employees( honest to God truth). Please talk to a former employee before you decide to apply for any position. If you do decide to apply be ready to be overworked, underpaid, sabotaged, feeling inadequate somedays. But I love my doctors they are the best entity of University of MN physicians:)

M Health is not a good place to work if you are an LPN. The company does not recognize LPN’s as being nurses.  LPN’s do not have the ability to do any  nursing related tasks. The primary job function for LPN’s at this company consist of scheduling follow up appointments.  IT DOES NOT TAKE A NURSE to schedule appointments! LPNs are treated as secretaries and are paid much lower than ACTUAL secretaries! The turnover rate is so high for LPN’s that literally every department is short staffed. As a clinical employee you are expected to float throughout the entire building (with an hour or less of training) to any department when there are staffing needs. It doesn’t matter which department you are hired for because you'll never work in one area consistently.  You will be working in every department all over the building. LPN’s are just bodies to fill holes in the clinic schedule. If you’re an LPN who doesn’t mind floating to different departments regularly with little to no training and you’re passionate about scheduling follow up appointments for patients, then this is the job for you!

The start of the day consisted of turning on my pager, checking emails and voices messages. Pulling up provider schedules and flagging accounts to meet with families in need of assistance; Working on a large campus caused me to shuttle between facilities and clinic to provide services as needed, but I enjoyed it. I screened  daily appointment schedules in search of added patients without insurance, referrals and preparing forms for patient meetings and collecting money for visits. I would touch bases with management as need to follow up in regards to difficult accounts. Worked with my co-workers, and staff in a very friendly environment. The hardest part of my job for me; was telling families they didn't qualify for programs that could have offset their financial responsibilities or the cost was greater than  we anticipated. The enjoyable part of my job was meeting the families that I spoke with over the phone locally, and from other states, countries.  When I'm able to give  them great news about their application process. Also leaving my job to move to Georgia was difficult after working for the company for such a long time.

I came from Fairview to UMP. UMP really cares about their employees, and I have felt respected and cared for by management since I began with the company. My manager is a reason I continue to stay in my role - she is so awesome. The department head and director of services are also great people and care about their employees. This is very different compared to the company I came from. Admin have been impressive, I feel respected by them. The MD's really care about the patients. Awesome benefits package. When we have enough staff, remote work is possible on a regular basis.

The biggest negative honestly has to do with being chronically short-staffed. It sometimes feels like you are doing 2-roles at once as a result. I think if UMP did more to attract new hires, work to retain, and offered a slight bump in pay to stay above the other health facilities in the same area... they would attract staff and would do very well as a company. It would continue to be well-known company, and would attract more patients.

Here at the Clinic and Surgery Center it is a fast pace environment to work at and depending what department you may work it varies. As much as I enjoy my job here I wish things could be a lot better. So, with my review I hope to help those individuals interviewing at M Health's Clinic and Surgery Center and tell my experience. I don't plan to keep my position here permanent as team work and management here isn't the greatest. Parking is limited and with a new building here there should be free parking available to employees. With how much money is invested here you think there would be free parking. You either have a contract with some type of parking ramps, garages or find your own parking space. Except do we all really make enough to afford parking? On a daily basis we see roughly from 40-70 patients depending which hallway you are located and the say of the week. How I can sum it all up is patient's are great, but this place and who you work with aren't the greatest. Isn't that every where?

The current CEO likes no one, her leadership style is to intimidate people and she has no relationship with anyone in the company except her direct reports. The trickle down effect is toxic across the organization, people feel left in the dark about everything and scared for their jobs. They let wonderful talent walk out the door and keep the unaccountable. The worst part as an employee is trying to figure out what belongs to UMP, Fairview or the U of M. Each has their own systems and departments and the clinic staff is expected to know how to navigate through it all. It is awful for patients too who don't understand it. Mostly they don't understand why they get multiple bills from multiple systems. There is little integrity in this organization, there are much better healthcare systems in the Twin Cities to chose from for employment.



Working at M Physicians has been an incredibly rewarding experience. As a staff member, I have seen firsthand the dedication and passion that goes into every aspect of our clinical trials.
