On the whole, it's a great company to work for in the area and the benefits are solid. I want to underline that the majority of depts at UVM are just fine and the coworkers are pleasant and understanding.

However....for whatever reason, there seems to be an issue with some managers that they've allowed toxic work environments to fester over years (decades, nearly, in some places). Some departments are filled with staff that bully each other, talk behind patients backs, talk behind physicians' backs, and create a hostile and unnecessarily stressful environment. The ones that don't take part in this culture are asked to leave for being "not the right fit" after their "training" period has ended, and the ones that perpetuate it stay in the system and are nearly impossible to get rid of. 

That being said, as long as you don't work in one of those departments (really only a few that are like this but enough to warrant a problem) it's a worthwhile place to work.

Also, the fact that .5 - 1hr (depending on dept) is docked from pay for "lunch" although no one takes a full hour for lunch or even half an hour in most places. You have to email your manager to fix it every single time which is a pain, so you essentially end up unpaid for nearly an hour each day which is really frustrating.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The benefits and knowing you’re at least part of helping others. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of this department is the toxic work environment.  There are one or two people that aren’t so bad, but the others are terrible. I was borderline bullied in this clinic, and others that have worked there before and after me, have said the same.  If you can’t care for each other, you have no business working in a place that cares for others.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment and culture is absolutely toxic. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day consisted of going to work, trying to learn and do my job, and being criticized and dummed down in front of others- especially patients. After six months of working in this clinic, I still lacked adequate training.

While UVMMC seems perfect on the outside, it's pervasive with bullying that HR covers up. Even the employee union has a hard time holding the bullies accountable. I've worked in healthcare for almost 15 years and I've experienced my fair share of mistreatment and workplace bullying but UVMMC was by far the worst. And to see how hard HR will go to protect the bullies was eye-opening. The pros: depending on the department some medical assistants are given a wide-scope of hands-on care. In some departments, medical assistants are only able to room and take vitals. There are so many different departments you can work in as a medical assistant. Another pro is fair pay (UVMMC is unionized). The most enjoyable part of the job was speaking with the patients and trying my best to make a positive impact on their day while also doing my job effectively and accurately. 

The location itself is a reflection of the people that live and work here. HR has done an excellent job of rebranding itself from the original CVPH where it's former job titles were held.

If you weren't born into being related to anyone, or have history, you better watch out, you better not cry. Now I'm telling you why, everyone will smile at you and wait for you to quit or make your life miserable until you do. Fortunately I am one of the lucky ones that are moving into to lobbying now and will not forget my experience here 

Overall the team was great but management was toxic. Micromanagement is not the way to increase productivity. NO ONE should have to explain their personal life in order to use earned PTO, that is their business, not the nosey supervisors. Reviews were not consistent. Promises made but no delivery. Overall I am sure there are great departments but the Radiology Coding team is not one of those unless you like being treated with disrespect and a lack of boundaries. 

CPVPH is hands down the most understaffed, small town hospital I've ever worked at. They put on a good first impression and everything goes downhill from there. The hospitals staff turnover is at an all time high and no one is satisfied, including the managers. Nobody stays long term because of the backstabbing, lies, gossip and manipulation.  

I loved working here. I came from a much larger hospital and when I stated working at UVM the connections and people I met were just amazing. Of course everywhere has their good and bad days, but for the most part I would usually always have a good time while at work. The nurse to assistant ratio was awesome when paired with a good and helpful nurse.

Typical growing pains of a recently formed integrated academic health system but people are phenomenal and their is purpose in the work you are doing for the people of Vermont and Northern NY.  Pay and benefits are good considering cost of living and there are many opportunities to grow and contribute. 

I had worked at UVM as a nurse fresh out of college in the early 2000s. Not a bad work environment, but burned out over a few years. Recently returned to the hospital and can say it's much better now. Good pay, management is more tuned in nursing needs, and better work-life balance. I feel like a valuable and appreciated member of the team now. 

I’ve worked in other healthcare areas within revenue cycle and management in Florida . This is by far the best employer I have had when it comes to benefits, time off, work/life ratio, coworker camaraderie. Especially this department with my immediate management being understanding, friendly, and helpful.
