Work opportunities at UTEP were always available at any time as an undergraduate and graduate student. Many of the offices I worked in had strong ethical qualities and friendly student-oriented environment. I never felt overwhelmed by the tasks I was given. In fact, I felt relieved at the beginning of every work shift, as I could escape from my daily, stressful student life. I enjoy work as long as it's hands on and I don't have to sit down for long periods of time, and the offices at UTEP always treated me to that. The supervisors are considerate of a student's responsibilities and are happy to work around any arising problem regardless of their busy schedule.

As an undergraduate research assistant at UTEP, the pay was more rewarding than the one of a student intern's. The supervisor treated me more like a fellow researcher than a student. This allowed me to manage my own time and complete all tasks at my own pace, resulting in a well-done job.

As a graduate teaching assistant, I admit pay could have been a little better, as we were expected to complete teaching tasks on top of our thesis work and still be able to pay for tuition. We were not allowed to have a second job, which was a problem because our pay did not help in making ends meet most of the time. However, I enjoyed being on the other side of the classroom as a leader, as if looking at a mirror, and working with undergraduates in creative ways. After all, I was an undergraduate once, too, and understood what can make a lab section more interesting. 

Overall, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to study and work in campus, because it saved me a lot of time, money, and stress.


I worked at UTEP in four different capacities. I was Program manager for the university NPR station  where I taught Basic and advanced radio practices. Then I worked for a program called TASP which would prep students to enter the university. I also worked at the English language institute under two or three different managers. And finally, I worked at UTEP while I was a grad student as a TA. 

My first job was probably one of the most demanding ones. I had to work a lot of hours for not very good pay. The station manager aggressively recruited me for the position. However,  After just two or three months he left, and I was not satisfied with my salary as it was. However, the Director of mass communications which we were under, had me work as a teacher and that supplemented my salary. The next three positions I had, which was primarily teaching English as a Second Language were a lot more satisfying. I had a tough schedule since I was still working at the local Community college, but it seems the busier I was, the better grades I got. By the time I graduated from UTEP, It had become an incredible university and very much improved compared to my earlier experiences.

-Infrastructure and technical talent needed to establish management's goals for public facing news, media and presence is severely lacking.
-Management's grasp of modern technology is limited to third had hearsay and not true technical understanding.
-As management ages, it is increasingly out of touch with new technologies utilized to interface with the public and its own employees.
-Financial resources are often spent on public facing window dressing instead of a solid infrastructure upon which those things should be built.
-Old methods such as print, news paper, mail and cold calling are actively sought out and utilized instead of modern methods of the electronic era.
-Employees quickly learn, in the enviornment of 'little kingdoms', that original thought and pushing the envelope will not be tolerated.

I just work for one organization in side the organization, so I can only speak for the Aerospace Center, not the University itself.

I like working here. I don't hate every day, and I've been here about 3 years now. While I'm told my experience isn't shared, I personally don't deal with any micromanaging, I'm just asked to do a job and I figure out how to do it, when to do it, ect. Of course, there will be tasks that take priority, but this happens maybe less than a few times a year. 

Management (at least mine) are pretty good at making me feel appreciated, I never had that before. The work/life balance is good as its purely an 8 to 5 job and rarely are you ever expected to come in earlier or be there later. And when they do, they are important events and they do try to comp your time when we do go over.

Pros: Usually left to my own devices to do things. Appreciated and treated like a professional.

Cons: Management can be a bit unorganized. When events come up out of the blue, it can get pretty chaotic (too many chiefs, not enough chiefs).

Working at the university while pursing my MA degree was excellent. The two positions I held were fun and challenging at times but always beneficial to my development. A typical day for me would be handling operation over at the track ensuring things were up to par (travel , meetings, preparation for practice) followed by ending of the other half of my day at production working on material for other various sports such as graphics, videos and flyers. 

I learned a tremendous amount while balancing two departments and gaining experience in two different fields at the University. The culture was relaxed while still maintaining a fast pace environment. The most difficult times during this process was balancing departments activities when they both had events going on. Despite everything I really enjoy the environment and people coming to work everything doing things I loved made my studies an awesome one.

As the institution’s Chief Business Officer, responsible for the supervision through various directors of almost 1,000 employees with an overall university budget of $420 million, a capital construction budget of over $60 million and endowment investments of over $100 million. The responsibilities included:  General Accounting Department; Budget Office; Payroll Office; Student Business Services Department; Purchasing and Materials Management; Facilities Services including Building Maintenance, Custodial Services, Architecture and Construction, Grounds Maintenance, and the Motor Pool; Campus Police; Professional and Continuing Education; Information and Technology; Special Events; University Bookstore; Union Bldg Services; Environmental Health and Safety; Human Resource Services; and Internal Auditing.

The biggest thing about being a leader within the Athletic Training program at UTEP, is being able to teach others the wonders of being an Athletic Trainer.  Being able to educate the students and provide treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention to the athletes is very fulfilling.  I am able to see both the students and athletes grow and heal from injuries so they can return to play.  The long hours and hard work is something that I love.  I enjoy the tasks of staying busing and being on my  toes. I have learned a great deal from the staff and from personal experience that has lead me to obtain a license in athletic training in the state of Texas. The hands on learning and on the field learning has given me the confidence and knowledge for anything that comes my way.

I really enjoyed and miss my job at the Rec Center, I made a lot of valuable friends with my coworkers and supervisors. I was challenged both as am employee and a student. I believe it was a great place to start working and gaining experience, they valued and understood that your education came first and were very willing to help out any way they could. I miss the fun and relaxed environment and just the overall positive  energy of an everyday work day. The actual work was very easy and quick to learn. The most challenging part of working on campus or working in general as a full time student was managing school, work, and any other extra curriculars. I have nothing but positive memories and things to say about this place. I grew as a person from just the timid 18 year old to the now 22 college graduate.

I worked at UTEP as a teaching assistant and research assistant. In general it was a good experience to work with people from the computer science department. They come from many different cultural backgrounds, are easy to work with, and are very friendly. The CS department has a new brand building, which is pretty nice and comfortable. My supervisors (professors) are well prepared, are very patient, and they are willing to help you and guide you when you get stuck with a particular assignment.
It was nice to work with students, you get new ideas, perspectives, and also reinforce your knowledge when teaching. It also helps to develop some skills, such as communication, networking, team work, and teaching skills.

I worked as a Tutor in the Miner Athletic Academic Center. I worked with many NCAA Division I athletes as a one-on-one tutor for almost all liberal arts subjects (psychology, English, history, Spanish, communications, etc) as well as occasionally leading study groups for science, history, and psychology for exams. The management was fantastic and willing to work around the class schedules of the tutors (I was a Master's student) as well as the athletes. The hardest part of the job was when students did not want to learn or were unwilling to participate in tutoring sessions. The most enjoyable part of the job was the flexibility and being a part of the University team.
