If you were in district 13, you'd stand a chance with the toxic culture here. Between leaders that outright lie to those who have memory loss, there's plenty of woodworm downtown. Culture eats strategy for breakfast they say....no matter how great your strategy is, your plan will fail without an organizational culture that encourages people to live it and live by it. At this organization, "The Firm" are firmly in charge. If you don't have a crystal ball and know what they want you to do and say every second of the day, then you're on thin ice. They expect immediate answers to problems, even if all the facts are unknown. They expect you to be always-on, even if you're not bedside. The public persona is a facade, behind closed executive doors, the hunger games play out.

Leaders will stab you in the back without a blink of an eye. They will dish out the kool-aid by the gallon while pontificating mission statements. In return, you'll pay with blood, sweat and tears. I've seen to many great leaders quit, be pushed or watch them breakdown here. Favoritism is rife, as is sketchy HR practices. People promoted into jobs that weren't advertised, peopel able to get advanced because they are connected to someone. It happens all the time. There are other, better health systems around, go there, you'll be valued more.

Goood Medical Assistant – Hospital Experience

As a Medical Assistant in a hospital setting, I provided compassionate, patient-centered care while supporting physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in a fast-paced environment. My responsibilities included obtaining vital signs, documenting patient histories, preparing patients for examinations and procedures, collecting laboratory specimens, performing EKGs, and assisting with various clinical tasks to ensure efficient patient care. I maintained accurate electronic medical records, monitored patient flow, and communicated important information between patients and the healthcare team. I also assisted with medication administration under supervision, infection control practices, and patient education regarding treatments and follow-up care. Working in the hospital allowed me to develop strong clinical, organizational, and communication skills while caring for patients with a wide range of medical conditions. I prioritized patient safety, confidentiality, and professionalism at all times. Through collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, I helped deliver high-quality healthcare services and contributed to positive patient outcomes while maintaining efficiency in a demanding clinical environment. This experience strengthened my ability to adapt quickly, manage multiple responsibilities, and provide excellent patient care under pressure.

The most enjoyable part of the job is working with the patients and having a great team of coworkers. The overall culture is flawed because about 75% of the people who advance appear to be those that will do what they are told without questioning or offering suggestions. Meanwhile they make it sound like they want employees to have “Questioning attitudes.” Those who question things, or propose other options rarely move up. Additionally, there are multiple leaders-it feels like you have multiple people telling you what to do and not enough people doing actual work. One of the hardest parts of the job is that factory principles and expectations are applied to providing services and the bottom line is more important than actually helping people get better. Quantity over quality is pushed as the desired value. The other difficulty is being micromanaged to the point that creativity, autonomy, and decision making is suppressed. As employees with advanced post secondary degrees, we should be trusted to make clinical decisions within our scope of practice without consulting the three people we report to. 

Honestly, I had such high hopes for U of L Health. They seemed like such a polished and professional organization that was focused on patients but that is just as facade. This is easily the most disorganized organization I’ve ever worked for. Upper management is completely disconnected from middle management and actual working therapists. Information is constantly changing, policies and rules are inconsistently enforced, and the documentation system is the worst I’ve ever used. The pay here is insanely low compared to other organizations in the area and PTO is a joke (less than 4 hours per paycheck!) Honestly the only thing that keeps people here are the very affordable benefits. They also offer free tuition to U of L for staff and family but as someone for whom this benefit does nothing (and won’t for a decade because my kids are young), I wish they would scrap this benefit and just offer better pay and PTO. 

As a hospital employee, I think everyone's experience will vary. I am a Patient Access Registrar at an ambulatory center that used to be a Jewish Hospital location. These positions used to be handled by Conifer until Summer 2020 when UofL purchased all of the Jewish locations and decided to take over their own hiring. Nothing has changed much. They carried over the same management. This is mostly a simple job...especially if you're in one of the ambulatory centers. There are only a few issues. Continuity of training is horrible. I'm an PRN employee so I work at various locations throughout the city. Everyone throughout all of the locations runs it how they want to run it. It's not uncommon to go to a different location and be told "This is how we do it over here". Also, management is pretty hands off. They don't really even say anything or acknowledge you unless you've done something wrong. Overall, it's a really easy job for decent pay.

UofL Health bought Jewish Hospital right when I started and things get better everyday. I work in the laboratory and we have a fun group of co-workers and a really nice and supportive management team. In the next few months they're bringing in a new Beckman-Coulter automated core lab for chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis. It's going to be very cool. We just got a new breakroom, bathrooms, and locker room. Everything is being remodeled and updated. We have really great deal on health insurance and a very competitive 401k. They just gave everyone a market adjustment so now our pay is in line with other employers in the area. They also give out nice swag several times a year and free meals on holidays. We park in a sheltered garage connected by a pedway which is a lot closer than most other hospitals in the area. I know it used to be a hard place to work but that was before I started there.

A typical day is fast paced and unpredictable. I have learned the importance of building a strong team environment. You will not succeed here unless you are a team player! Middle management is under a great deal of pressure and are given unrealistic expectations that are passed on to subordinates.  Additionally, upper management is out of touch; making decisions without having observed any interaction with patients. It seems that the most important thing is making money, not providing services. The productivity expectations are unrealistic and morale crushing. The hardest part of the job is the thankless nature of the work and the safety risks.  The most enjoyable part is seeing the patients make progress. The interaction between colleagues is positive and enjoyable as well. 

*Usually starts with getting report and then starting on vitals. You’re lucky if you have more than one tech because you’ll have an unsafe ratio to care for. 
*To just go to work and keep to yourself; most staff thrive off drama and are catty. Same applies to workplace culture. PCAs tend to help each other out and some nurses do. Other nurses feel they’re above what the tech does and will come find you to do a 
simple task such as giving water to their patient.
*Hardest part: being expected care for 15+ patients on your own because management doesn’t want to properly staff a certain shift.
Enjoyable part: getting to know the patients you’re taking care of. Most leave an impact on you and make this job something to be proud of.

Caring for 6 patients without patient care assistants(PCA or care techs).
Sometimes doing the job of a nurse, sitter, care tech and transport.

Safe and collaborative working environment with people from all works of life. 
Violence against staff members is not tolerated and legal support is provided to staff who decides to press charges against a violent patient or relative 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy especially on days when there are no care techs

What is the best part of working at the company?
I learned a lot there were 3 different parts for me on this project. When one part ended I was moved to a different project and extended.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It was a stress free project for me.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Pretty laid back, it was a great company to work for

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Went to different UL Health facilities, some days I worked tickets and fixed user issues. Other times I was signing doctors with DEA numbers up for online prescribing of medications.
