VIRGINIA HEALTH SERVICES

When I worked for virginia health services, the staff was rude. 
Management was horrible, I had several issues with my pay
and with my checks arriving late and they took their sweet time
to handle everything I even had to call and email my schedule 
coordinator several times. There were call outs daily and they 
still would come back and have a job. People would work there 
and take several smoke breaks or just disapper all together. I did not 
want to be a snitch but I winded up calling the director and the scheduler
about people leaving me alone with 30+ patients. I even had one girl 
try and fight me due to me snitching, but I was left alone with all those 
people right around dinner time and bed time. I even had a couple people who almost 
fell out of their beds due to the fact I could not find anyone to assist me or come from the 
other side of the buildign to help. I called out myself due to being sick from the flu 
and they called me so many times to come in and didn't even care I was sick.
I even had them ask me to travel to another location which would've been 2 hour drive for me 
and told me I would not be compensated for gas or paid extra for going out that far. 
I had the scheduler put me on the schedule without my knowledge and 
threatened to fire me due to not showing up when I was not informed. The training was horribel.
I seen many coworkers harm the patients. I seen many workers not feeding the patients or lying to 
the family about their care. I even seen them let one lady sit in her own feces for hours and I 
told the nurse and she did nothing about it. I was unabel to move the patient myself due to her being 
300+ pounds. HORRIBLE Company. HORRIBLE training. HORRIBLE support system and they DO NOT CARE about these people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started off at this job in July 2005 on the 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift. I ended up on the 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift by the time I ended my employment with this job December 2012.  I worked on the Skilled Care Unit for approximately two years.  I then became night shift supervisor for approximately a year, then became Team Care Coordinator for the Skilled Care Unit. By the end of my employment, I was just a charge/medication nurse.  The majority of my position as a nurse at this facility consisted of passing medications to patients, obtaining vital signs, blood sugars, admitting patients from other facilities or the hospital to our facility, assessing and evaluating patients statuses to report to the doctor, performed dressing changes on various wounds, performed various injections, i.e., subcutaneous, IM, hung IV medications, hung tubefeedings, performed trach care. Every person I worked with at this facility became like family to me. I am the type of person who can get along with any and everybody and I thoroughly enjoyed working at Virginia Health Services.  I learned quite a lot working with the elderly and it was an amazing experience in so many ways.  An opportunity was opened up for me from a friend/ex co-worker to work for the government so I took it for a change of pace in my nursing career.  Otherwise, I would have probably remained employed with Virginia Health Services.

● Pay & benefits
My pay and benefits at VIRGINIA HEALTH SERVICES were poor. I always had trouble with payroll, and they won’t let you work overtime. Anywhere near 40 hours and they stop you because they hate extra pay. And you can’t get vacation til you’ve been there at least a year and a half.

● Job security and advancement
In terms of job security at VIRGINIA HEALTH SERVICES, I think if you’re a CNA your job is SECURE. They don’t care if you’re a horrible cna or not. I worked with coworkers that openly admitted to other coworkers and myself she took a nap on the clock, then when confronted by management denied, and constantly caused conflict, with absolutely no repercussions. It makes it hard for the workers that actually cared.

● Management
In general, managers at VIRGINIA HEALTH SERVICES picky. They pick favorites. If you don’t do work but are nice and friendly to the manager you’re the greatest there is. I on the other hand got scolded for being too friendly with my patients and families because I talked with them too much?

● Culture
Collaboration with my colleagues at VIRGINIA HEALTH SERVICES is mixed. All my nurses were PHENOMENAL, but CNAs were a hit or miss.

● Overall
My experience working at VIRGINIA HEALTH SERVICES is mixed. My patients and families loved me, and I them. Payroll needs improvement. Nurses are incredible, management needs improvement.

the schooling there is average and they will prepare you for your cna test with the state board.  but you still end up paying 300 dollars which is average.  For your 2 week clinical you are basically free labor for them as well for experience.  The whole tone of the company is how much money they can make and the bottom line.  they really need to focus more on the care of the residence and not teach people how to cut corners when they do not have a state inspection.  There are never ANY supplies to fully staff the small amount of CNA's that are there.  Running out of wash cloths to bathe residence should not be a normal everyday thing, but it is there.  Not having enough supplies stocked for sanitation and disinfecting is common also.  Your pay will be incorrect and being cheated out of hours is common as well.   every paycheck was incorrect.  I have never been more disappointed in a company.  Corners should never be cut when caring for another human being.  Staff should feel welcomed and respected by fellow team members and management.   I hope they see this review and take the immediate action to correct this terrible system and improve

this is not a place to work if you are looking for somewhere good morals, or give you a welcoming feeling to walk into work daily. there are some staffers who are favoritized by head nursing managers who aren't disciplined on anything because they are friends, instead the good employees they write them up on trivial issues, while those employees who hardly ever do their work get away on a daily basis with not thoroughly bathing residents, having them lay in soiled briefs/ bed for hours/ take half of the day to change patients and bathe them, or lie and place it on other staff to do it. I've neve worked in a work environment that honors such rude, nasty, unreliable staff in my entire life. again, if you're looking for work don't go there!

Typically you come in, check the schedule for your floor assignment, proceed to that floor and receive your assignment.  You learn great patient and family skills as your constantly exposed to both.

Management in my opinion is great, their are great LPNs on the floor, the ADN is SUPERB.  Most staff work great together, but as in all work places, you will have the occasional flare up, but just in that moment. 

The hardest part of the job is when you worksheet, it's hard to give your best attention to all your residents

The most enjoyable part are the residents, they are all great.  I've been here 7+ years, if it was bad, I would have moved on.  I've found, if you come in and do your job, help your fellow nurses things will go fine.

VHS is one of the better nursing home companies in the area to work for.  They offer flexible scheduling for those employees attending school with a  position for you once you finish.  There is also endless opportunities for picking up shifts as well as advancement among their 9 facilities.  As long as you prove to be a dedicated and loyal employee, they will take care of you and help you with anything you may need in regards to your job, life and schedule.  Most companies will not offer that type of flexibility and accommodations.  VHS also now has a dedicated education center that offers their employees the  training and extra help needed to be successful in nursing.

Ever since I started working there I felt very appreciated as an employee and an individual. I was quickly promoted to Billing Specialist after working as a receptionist for only two months. I didn't even have to ask about the position when it opened up, it was immediately offered to me. Since becoming a biller I have also taken on new responsibilities due to another biller leaving, which also made me feel appreciated because they believed me competent enough to take on new challenges and responsibilities.

I would never recommend putting family in this facility. I have seen all departments and it doesn't get better. When I first worked for this company it was wonderful and I loved my job. I wanted to move up and invested in the company. After a year the manager of my facility left and new management took over. Almost everyone I knew left and the facility felt apart. Everything became about money and residents were pretty much price tags for how much could be made through insurance for their care. Many people died and as a result I left. Would never go back and wouldn't recommend working here now. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
There really is no best part working here. Just to be employed is a blessing within itself, so I am grateful for the opportunity. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing an frankly could give a hoot.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
What culture? Like most jobs in this region, there is a plantation effect. Do what Master says or get whipped. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
First find out which way is up, once that's solved, find out who is giving the orders to perform said job. If the person giving the orders are high enough on the pecking order... have at it.
