Valley Hope Addiction Treatment and Recovery

Honestly, I would say VHA has a great end goal in mind with saving patients lives. The average day as far as IS goes is you clock in (most new hires will do 10 a.m. - 7 p.m) It is a high call volume, high stress environment with most of the time very little thanks for the job you do. Some Co-workers (more often than it should happen honestly) would treat you rudely and get away with it, it seems the would forget you are a human and technically a co-worker. Then, as healthcare is a 24/7 industry you would have a rotating on-call shift schedule. The days and holidays were supposed to be rotating on a set schedule. For the most part, it wasn't too bad and was mostly delegated fairly. But with a moderate-high turnover rate, it started to get more and more noticeable that if you were newer, single, and without kids you would get shafted. "I didn't have any family" seemed to be the justification. Once, I had to work Three holidays in a row on call (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years all in the same year) And due to a work related event that happened on Christmas day I was unable to see my elderly grandma who waited until dark to visit me. Senority and an over-bloated management staff also negatively impact company culture and morale. (For example, understaffed & overworked nurses and Information Services were very low on priority to get hired, but it seemed corporate was able to create several new management positions out of thin-air)  However, the pay was (and still is) very good and there are some opportunities that prevent themself for advancement. Your co-workers are awesome people, but sometimes due to the high stress environment the morale can be very very low and you can just feel when your entire team dreads going into work. Also, my direct management was very understanding about personal issues that arose during my first year of working. The practices they teach and the experience you get is valuable as well. So all in all, if you need experience, enjoy the healthcare industry, helping patients, and want to be compensated reasonably then by all means go for it.

For the first time in nearly 50 years, Valley Hope brought in a CEO with no clinical background. This individual attempted to run a nonprofit clinical organization as a for profit business. The company had previously operated under the philosophy that clinicians took care of patients, and management took care of clinicians. That went by the wayside as longtime staff suddenly became expendable. Benefits were cut across the board; PTO was cut, salary increases were cut, 401K contributions were cut, bonuses were cut. Seasoned staff were set up and fired on trumped charges, or were pressured to leave...presumably so less experienced people could be hired at lower salaries. Age discrimination done in a sneaky way that would be nearly impossible to prove. Patient care suffered. Workloads were increased. Patient care suffered. Management pretended to be supportive of staff, but in reality were not willing to offer any kind of help. The "offer" of help was simply another nail in the coffin of people being fired or run off after many years of satisfactory service to the company. The atmosphere used to be that of extended family, where management was made up of people who had come up through the ranks. The old CEO knew everyone by name, asked about people's families, etc. The new CEO cared only about spending a fortune to "rebrand" the company, paying an advertising company to design a new logo which then went onto everything from signs to letterhead. Nothing but ego! This guy thought he was going to "save" the company by a new ad campaign, and pay for it by stabbing his staff members in the back. A CEO? Yes.  A leader? Not in this lifetime. The old Valley Hope was a wonderful place to work. The new Valley Hope is a little shop of horrors. Run, don't walk, for the door.

Overall, working at VH is very rewarding. Getting to be a smart part in a patients journey from coming in broken  and hopeless to leaving full of hope and life was absolutely wonderful. 

However, the 10am-9pm case manager position offers little time for actual case management as many agencies patients require for follow ups close at 5pm, in addition we were unable to see clients during small group this cut into even more time we could actually meet with patients. With high case loads (20+ per CM) and little time for scheduling with patients case managers are often stressed with being able to complete continuing care plans with only meeting with patients 15 minutes per week, with the average stay of 28-30 days, this means an entire care plan must be completed within a total of 60 minutes of meeting with the client. This often included primary care follow up, MAT, Counseling, IOP, and sober living arrangements. I found myself often stressed and overwhelmed while counselors had lower case loads, work requirements, and lectures were pushed onto Case managers as well.
During my 3 month meeting this was discussed with my supervisor. I brought up the idea of pulling patients out of small groups for 15 minutes to meet or adjusting this positions hours but they were unwilling to make arrangements due to the “One Valley Hope” schedule (or because group therapy can be billed for much higher rates than case management.)

I was not the only CM that has similar issues. 

Management listen to your front line workers, VH is a magical place and I LOVED my time there but had to leave due to not feeling supported by management. 

The Case manager position was a “catch all” for everything counselors didn’t want to do. We were overworked and undervalued. 

This company/organization was once outstanding.  That being said times have changed dramatically.  First of all in the past 4 years there has been a complete upper management/corporate  overhaul.  While some was most definitely necessary, most was destructive and unfortunately this wonderful facility lost it's way and compromised patient care all in pursuit of the dollar.  For anyone who has worked here for a length of time, the changes in the recent past while watching this organization lose its way was nothing short of a heartbreak.  The saddest part was watching the decline in patient care.  Saving lives WAS something Valley Hope did on a daily basis and they did it very well ! That sacred time is past.  
Other changes that came about with the total change of leadership and lack of oversight was denial of use of PTO for both personal AND medical reasons.  No raises for several years due to profit loss except for upper management who were showered with benefits denied to the "lower class."   
Stay away unless a "dead end" job is your goal.  You will never be appreciated or compensated regardless of how much you give of yourself or monetary donations (which they request constantly).  One other concern was other employees who were always finding out about other employees salaries who they believed were making more than they were and reporting to management pointing out their shortcomings and making complaints.  Consequently, lack of confidentiality was also a problem.
Best to stay away from this falling organization. 


I really enjoyed working at PVH. The patients were amazing but the nurses station was too small for the amount of work that was going on. Management and counseling at times weren’t on the same page with nursing and this caused head butting between the two sides when they needed to work together. 
But, everyone has the patients interest at heart and that really meant a lot to me. No matter what the patients came first and that’s not always the case in the this business. 
Great place to work but could be very stressful if you pick up on other peoples energies. 
Compensation for night staff is outstanding but it is job where you are going to work all day and night. Which makes it all go by very fast but an intense amount of knowledge can be picked up quickly from the expert nurses and aides. 
The CEO basically left them hanging at the beginning of covid regarding more help. Very negative emails about loss of money and tightening of belts when the place was bursting with patients and not enough staff at times.  It was very hard to read the CEO’s emails and not want to walk out the door at times. You can’t tell the staff that are overworked and stressed that they need to do more with less. It was literally impossible to do more safely. Patient aides and nurses did their absolute best to dot every “i” and sometimes counseling didn’t understand the pressure nursing was under 24/7. 

Shame on the CEO most of all. These are outstanding people that are the heart of the company. 

Working here has been an incredibly rewarding experience, thanks to the genuinely positive and inclusive workplace culture. From day one, I felt welcomed, valued, and supported by both leadership and my colleagues. The environment encourages open communication, collaboration, and mutual respect, which makes it easy to thrive professionally and personally.

What stands out most is the strong emphasis on employee well-being and development. Management leads with empathy and transparency, and there's a clear commitment to work-life balance. Recognition for hard work is consistent and meaningful, and feedback is always constructive.

Working at Valley Hope as a Business Office Coordinator has been a really positive experience. The flexibility here makes a big difference and the workload is not overwhelming, it's manageable and allows you to stay on top of your responsibilities without feeling burned out.

One of the best parts of the job is the people. It's not every day, or every workplace, where you're consistently greeted with kindness, respect, and genuine support, but that's exactly the environment at Valley Hope. Everyone is easy to work with, approachable, and truly cares about both the patients and each other. 

Another thing I appreciate is the trust that's given. You're hired for a reason and trusted to do your job. As long as your work is completed accurately and thoroughly, there's no unnecessary pressure or micromanagement. 

Overall, Valley Hope provides a healthy work-life balance, a supportive team environment, and a workplace culture built on trust and kindness. It's a place where you feel valued, respected, and confident in the work you're doing every day.

Typical Day: Micromanagement, does not allow an employee to have a voice to advocate for themselves, too many policy, programming, software and other changes all at once, none to little training is a typical day of high work stress with little to no support; not enough hours in a day to complete work, requirement to work overtime on short notice without extra compensation or reward and train yourself
Work culture:  is at an all time low continually.
Management: Bureaucratic, Unnecessary procedures, projects distract employees, lack of nuance which fosters an inequitable workplace which is dysfuntional and toxic; lack of putting the patient population and their care first and fore most importance
Hardest part of the job: meeting corporate needs at any given moment, even on days off
Most enjoyable part of the job: working with the substance abuse recovery patients
What I believe I have learned the most: embracing hardship as a pathway to peace, perserverance and personal/professionall boundaires, knowledge of state and federal laws, how to readily spot red flags in a professional relationship, and what I do not want in an employer



I perform assessments for level of treatment and facilitate an IOP group as well as three Continuing Care/aftercare groups weekly. Each Patient has a treatment plan which includes short term goals to work toward while they are in treatment. The initial plan is reviewed in 7 days during an individual session with the patient and updated. Individual sessions with each IOP patient are scheduled weekly. The Psychiatrist scedules to see Patients on Wednesdays at our office for medication management. 
I have learned that addiction affects all walks of life and that a life of Recovery is fulfilling indeed. The administration staff, chaplain, Counselor's and Psychiatrist work as a team to assist patients navigate successfully through the recovery process. The most difficult part of the job is hearing of a patient that was unable to continue in their recovery and they return to active addiction. The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing people in active recovery finding a life of fulfillment and happiness. 

Working at Valley Hope has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The culture here is supportive, collaborative, and genuinely centered on people. Leadership encourages innovation and forward thinking while maintaining a deep respect for staff and patients alike. There is a shared belief that recovery is possible for everyone, and that philosophy is reflected in how we care for individuals living with Substance Use Disorder—with compassion, dignity, and hope. Team members consistently lift one another up, creating an environment where professional growth and personal wellbeing are valued equally. Communication is open, ideas are welcomed, and successes are celebrated together. What stands out most is the sense of purpose that connects us all; everyone is here because they truly want to make a difference. Valley Hope feels less like a workplace and more like a home where people support each other and work toward meaningful change. I am truly proud to be part of this organization.
