Vertex Pharmaceuticals is focused on solutions for real medical need that makes a difference in people's lives. They attract smart motivated people and give them the resources they need to succeed. 

A requirement of the job is to successfully sell your project among all the competing proposals from other smart people in the company. Vertex is focused on leaders being able to develop compelling arguments, persuade Vertexians on the value proposition, and collaborate with others to achieve goals as opposed to have the top management just dictate what projects will be active and how many resources they assign to the work. 

This fostering of value and data driven decisions via a competition is energizing for some but can be frustrating for people used to big Pharma hierarchical decision making. This also makes hiring team members from big Pharma a bit risky since they may expect others to run interference for them.

Overall, a great place to work if you are ambitious and focused on the value you are creating in pursuit of products that help with serious unmet medical needs.

Vertex pharmaceuticals has a very welcoming and warm environment. A typical day for me involves many interactions with clients and customers, dealing with on-your-toes situations, working on promotions for our service, organizing BEOs, managing my catering team and making sure our operation runs smoothly and effectively. I have learned many management and communications skills, organizational tactics, and overall business processes and etiquette. My managers are great teachers who set examples for the rest of our staff to follow. A lot of what I have learned is because of their endless efforts to teach me something new every day. Other than my managers, the rest of my co-workers help to create a fun yet productive environment. 

Usually, the hardest part of my day isn't a single task, but working at a minimum, 11 hour days. This can be tiresome, at times, although necessary. On the contrary, the best part of my job is getting to build relations with our clients on a daily basis.

Paid beyond well for being on the phone all day.  Lots of meetings and extremely long, frequent coaching sessions combined with a high workload makes for a longer than normal day.  Great benefits, including a variety of commuter options.  It felt good to help people in an under served population, just draining after a while to keep up with everything as case managers where being constantly overloaded with expansions and new initiatives.  The people there are truly one of a kind with big hearts and a strong work ethic, and the company provides incentive to reward that hard work.  Management was wonderful and truly invested in the betterment of employees through development opportunities like promotions and rotations.

The irony is, for a company that relies heavily upon temp/contractors and interns to handle a huge percentage of the workload, they don’t really value the opinions of temps/contractors.  For annual surveys that are sent out for rankings, there’s the a catch that they’re only taking into consideration the feedback of full time workers, which presents challenges of holding Vertex fully accountable.  If they’re filtering the feedback of their temp/contract labor force by not taking it into consideration, change isn’t  going to happen and people will obliviously think everything is fine with the company. As an educator with a large territory each day is different. An example of one of my days might include a morning patient education class at one office followed by a lunch in-service at a second office, a meeting with a new healthcare provider and ending with a speaker program in the evening. I have learned alot about strategic planning and territory management. The management at Vertex is the best I have ever experienced.The Treatment Educator team is comprised of a extremely talented group of professionals who are over achievers and self driven. The most difficult part of the job was getting comfortable traveling and navigating new cities. The professional development and learning process has been an enjoyable part of this job. The Vertex family makes this an awesome place to work.

First of, working at any pharmaceutical company as a scientist is a huge responsibility and can be very demanding. Well, you're working for drug discovery to treat diseases, so the pressure is high and so much accountability on performance, etc. However, Vertex is amazing at making sure the employees, specifically the scientists, as I worked as a research scientist, are taking care of. Great management and workplace culture. Amenities and benefits were great. The hardest part of the job is of course meeting all the deadlines and be as efficient as possible. Which would be true for any jobs out there. The most enjoyable part of the job is the readily available resources.

The company is a very amazing company. They offer great pay, amazing benefits, very innovative, strive for success. My experience at the location started off good until new management took over the shift. Everyone became miserable on the shift. The work is very simple and for a very good cause. The other shift and other locations have such a more positive atmosphere. I hope it changes for my ex-colleagues they deserve it. The job became mentally draining and exhausting from career to I’m just here for a paycheck. I really hope they reconsider management and the lead to keep the Vertex atmosphere it had before a new manager had started.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals was my first insight into the corporate world. Before them I worked for small privately owned companies. I was worried to work for a big company, but all my worries were completely subsided. It was the best company I ever worked for, the management was so much more supportive than any other company I worked for. I was encouraged to ask questions and more importantly I was encouraged to ask for help! There was never a day I didn’t feel supported (even sometimes when I felt in over my head). 

Working for Vertex was an incredible 8 years filled with hard-work, creativity, challenging projects, amazing relationships, teamwork and most importantly - a lot of fun.  I hope the Vertex culture continues to remain strong as it grows/shifts into a more corporate environment.
