Management wasn't COMPLETELY transparent during hiring process, they let you see the iceberg above the water but not below on many issues.

*Pros: They truly do care about the Veterans. 100% without a doubt, VES goes above and beyond to go out of their way to make Veterans feel special and welcomed. That is a part of our training from day one.  There is a lot of flexibility with our scheduling because of the nature of business. It is very beneficial if you have personal stuff going on in your life. They 'appear' to appreciate their employees. They have bought us uniforms and jackets and Christmas gifts. The management always remember birthday and work anniversaries. They also try to share celebrations with the team. They are concerned about the safety about their employees while they are on the road. When you are not working in clinic you are working from home, doing reports and making calls to Veterans.

*Cons: Mass confusion, constantly. There are so many people who tell you what to do. The left hand NEVER talks to the right. In the same training, we had three different people tell us three different things- and this is a daily occurrence. Constantly changing the 'rules' on you- and then telling you are wrong without you knowing the new rules. There are so many emails sent out about the new "rules" you honestly never know if you are doing the right thing or not. This would all be okay if you had management support. Nepotism-- that is bread and thrives there. When asking multiple times about being promoted, no one would give me any job description or guide... just that I needed to keep showing that I wanted to be a part of the "dream team".

What you need to really know: This company has a purpose. VES is good at what they do as far as the Veterans are concerned. (Keep in mind that the providers are all contractors, so Veterans may have issues with the providers and their behaviors. But because they need the providers more than you, the provider will ALWAYS be right.) You will travel.... a lot. I was told that I would travel in my state. I did... kinda.... a little.... but I ended up all over my region. They don't have to ask, they just tell you to go. 7 days a week. They schedule doesn't come out to Friday for the next week, so you literally can't have a life unless you want to put in for time off every single time you want to do something, two weeks in advance. You NEED to be financially stable. Honestly, took this job because I needed a job. When you travel though you have to pay for stuff upfront. Regardless of you are going an hour away or 2 states away. They pay for your airfare and your hotel. Everything else (meals, gas, rental car, tolls, meals for providers on work days - yes you read that right, snacks for Veterans). It takes a month for you to get your first reimbursement, then its about a week after each one next. However, you are ALWAYS fronting the money. Some days are LONG.... like 12-18 hour days (depending on where your clinic is).

The pay is $16 an hour. (I found out recently that some areas get more, but that may be for cost of living.) Not near enough for the amount of work we do. I routinely work after hours, before work and during my lunch. I cannot get get all of the daily/weekly tasks done. I have told them time and time again... and nothing is done and when I miss a deadline I will get an email or a call asking me why I missed it. I have never had issues making deadlines before.

I am leaving ultimately for 3 reasons. 1) I can't afford to work here anymore. The fronting everything and not being able to get a second job due to scheduling.  2) We are starting to open back up from the Covid-19 closings. I have worked in the medical field for many years and I don't feel that the procedures set in place are safe. I have tried to express this and it has fallen on deaf ears. 3) The utter lack of respect that is shown for employees. I would absolutely come back to this company under new management

I worked there for 6 months, and everything was going fairly well. There was a big push to work from 8a to 4p Central Time, so if you live on the East or West coast, things are a bit more complicated. My training was...inadequate. While they did extend training out for a long time, it was paused for a large amount of time because they were being overrun by reports. Still, after practice, you get to knowing what you're supposed to do very quickly. I was praised for my professionalism, which was fine. I liked working overtime because of the pay boosts, and it helped me gather up money for a terrible time in my life. They really saved me there.

However, the instant you have trouble, they don't care. I sent them notices that I was being evicted for no reason of my own, and the amount of work I sent in decreased. I still sent in the required amount of work for me at that time, and my quality score was still within normal limits. The money I'd gotten and saved up from them came into use. 

Then, suddenly, as I was continuing a work day, I was fired. It was just a single call from HR telling me that I was no longer working for them. When I asked why, they said my performance wasn't up to par. I cited my absences, the emails I sent, and the quality score I had. They covered it up by saying I was an at-will employee and they could let me go at any time, and since they'd already made the decision, I couldn't protest it and nothing else could be done.

I was hit with whiplash from this, and it was incredibly distressing. I'd just gotten a new place and suddenly I couldn't pay rent for the foreseeable future. Before I could collect the emails I sent them, I was locked out of my email address with them (always remember to blind carbon copy your personal email address in these things, folks), and when I ended up having to apply for unemployment, they told the office that my work was inadequate instead of the at-will excuse they gave me at the end, and that still remains on my record.

At the end of the day, they don't really care about you. The culture will make it seem like you're kind of like a group of friends trying to work together, but they'll suddenly let you go without warning. For a group trying to help veterans, they certainly lack sympathy...and honesty, for that matter.

Don't trust it. If you take a job from them, do it to get the money. Do it for the veterans but have yourself in mind first, because honestly, as much as the people there claim they care, they don't care about /you/ anyway. Have a backup plan prepared to turn into your main plan. Be ready to only work with them for a little while. Take your check and quit before they fire you on your bad week. They already have their friends there and they're ready to keep them, but you're dispensable.

The application and interview process is pretty fast and straightforward but I found that the real interview is how well you perform while in training. Training is a bit brutal but it needs to be that way. That part will make more sense when you make it to production.

My particular role was extremely stressful. Some of the stress was due to my inability to effectively adapt and some of the stress was due to the quotas that cannot always be met due to other factors beyond my control. The leadership there does acknowledge the factors that are uncontrollable. They have also been creative and accommodating in performance appraisals so that other metrics and observations are factored in, especially integrity which is paramount there.

I know quotas were a recurring theme in the reviews I read prior to applying. I would caution the reader to not let the quotas deter them from applying. Although you should definitely strive to meet your weekly and monthly targets, what’s most important is quality, consistency, and integrity. I would discourage desperate behaviors that compromise quality - it isn’t worth it. I would also discourage unethical behavior - VES has ZERO tolerance for it! At the end of the day, just make sure production consistently trends upward. If you do that, quotas won’t stress you out. 

You also shouldn’t onboard with any baggage, so heal prior to starting - or at the very least, be communicative. VES is really big on equipping their employees to be healthy. They were very responsive to the pandemic and still remain proactive. They also provide resources for wellness - not just for the body but also the mind.

VES is incredibly dedicated to serving our veterans and they are by far better than any other C&P contractor out there - at least, according to all of the veterans and doctors I’ve asked. This reputation was built on the hard work of everyone at VES so expect to work hard.

This company does well in serving veterans from all walks of life. However working here is not worth the headache that you will receive from management. Management is not your friend in this place. They are very messy from the top to the very bottom. They will try to convince you that you can move up in the company. The sad thing is you will not move up at all. You will stay a Intake Specialist, if you’re lucky you will get “Senior” put in front of your Intake Specialist title. If you are someone who will not tolerate nasty emails and being talked down upon, you will not survive here.  This position requires a lot of traveling, which also requires you to use your personal credit/debit card. If you have many bills to pay then you might want to rethink this position as your funds can be tied up at times. Reimbursement can sometimes be a week or two depending on when management approves your spending receipts. 

This company does not care about your health/wellbeing. Management would send us to states knowing that there is a great increase in COVID cases. The managers and the Senior Intakes do not travel at all. Also there are family members of the management team that get special treatment. The nepotism in this company runs deep. Some of the Intakes Specialist will tell on you for brownie points. Choose your associates wisely within this company. Again be careful what you say to management. They are very nosey and will try to be your “friend” do not fall into the trap no matter how nice they may seem. I was let go with no explanation, they will simply let you go once they realize you won’t stand for their ignorance. If it’s any consolation, work here to get some experience but do not settle and make this a career. You are not paid enough to put up with the shenanigans and egos within company.

I have been with VES for almost 3 years now. The job is fairly easy once you get the hang of it but the issue is the pace they expect is impossible to maintain unless you work a ton of overtime. I usually work about 20 hours of OT a pay period, and I barely make over my quota, and I’m the bottom tier of QAs. 

They expect you to make quota even though the workload is usually low due to too many QA’s (really high turnover), and there’s always a group of overachievers taking all the cases. The only thing that makes the job bearable is the bonuses/incentives. I’ve made $6000 in bonuses one month. HOWEVER, the company was bought out by a larger company called Maximus and they have been steadily taking away our incentives. This month they announced ZERO incentives. There’s no reason to break your back now if there’s no bonuses yet they expect you to make an unrealistic quota. 

The company is meant to help veterans but due to the job being quota based, providers and QA’s cut corners to make sure they keep their job. Job stability is non existent unless you’re willing to work a ton of OT constantly. Say goodbye to having a life! It used to be sort of worth it due to the incentives but without them? Not worth it. I’m keeping my eye out for other jobs now.

The work culture is very much just a huge competition. They won't tell you that you might get randomly fired one day and it's very work heavy. You can get fired randomly after just one warning. They also have report cards and you get rated every week. You have to google everything for the day-to-day job activities and don't really need a medical background, it's just a lot of research. You can ask for help but also the reports you get done are dependent on the doctors and diagnostic places. So it's really unfair to have a quota of 400 reports a month, yet you can't send a report unless you have everything completed. The time it takes to gather everything needed, plus waiting for diagnostics is what is going to set you back. It actually does you a disfavor if you try to have a healthy work/life balance here. They will ask you to work a lot of overtime to make quotas, and if you don't - you might not be there for long. The money and people are nice, but they don't care if you are mentally stressed and if you have any sort of mental disability - pretty cutthroat. They will give you chances, but sometimes that's not enough - due to waiting on external factors in order to send reports. It's A LOT of information, so be prepared to learn/know/handle information regarding to every section of the human body and mental health that you need to be aware of at any given notice. I would never work here again tbh.

Upper-level management regularly implements decisions that prevent you from completing your quota, which is all they care about in the end.  Training is information-heavy, but eventually you can learn it all. Unfortunately, the pace of work is unsustainable and you will be pushed to do overtime to meet the minimum requirements for the job. Frequent major updates to workflow/technical processes mean you are constantly learning new ways to do you job while still being required to meet your production quota.

Managers and coworkers are present, but as it's full-time remote there isn't really an opportunity to communicate with any of them in anything but a superficial level.  More importantly, there isn't time anyway because any minute spent doing anything but working towards quota is only going to mean you have a 12 hour day trying to catch up so you don't get fired. They have also completely gutted the bonus structure twice now so current employees are being asked to do the same job for way less money. There is not a moment's rest and you will be scrolling through details of document after document for at minimum 8 hours every day, most of which are completed completely wrong by medical providers who also do not get any support or proper training from the company. 

So, if that sounds like a good time to you, give it a shot! Otherwise, go elsewhere. 

I worked for VES for 4 years and there is no such thing as a promotion. No matter how long you've been there or how good you are at your job, there is no real pay raise and now jump in title. If you want to move up you basically have to apply for a new job within the company. Also they constantly change the rules, expectations and quotas ever week and/or month. They send an email out every day which has a ranking system for where QA's are at the end of each day regarding their quota. So you see who is at the top and who is at the bottom. The email is sent to everyone in the department. There's no maternity/paternity leave. It's hard to take time off even if you have the PTO because it can impact your quota. If your quota is 10 reports a day, you basically have to do 30 a day because you are relying on providers to submit them correctly in a reasonable time and if you need diagnostics that can take forever. So you're always waiting on others to complete their portion before you can complete yours. Also, if you submit something to the VA and they send it back with questions it can count against you and you can basically get in trouble even if it is more so on the doctor to make sure they are doing things correctly. I wouldn't recommend this job to any family or friends.

Poor training/no guidance: 
When I first started, I had 1.5 hour web training with a QA. No other training was offered. I started seeing vets on my first day with literally no guidance and felt like I did them a disservice because I did not know how to properly conduct an evaluation/document the evaluation. 

Advice from a non-medical personnel:
I would get charts sent back with diagnosis and objective findings recommendations by a non-medical personnel. I do not think that it is appropriate for a person with no medical background/education to tell me what I should/should not diagnose. 

Terrible turn-around time:
They require all documents, evaluation, and addendums to be signed off in 48 hours, yet, they send addendums to you 3-4 months (sometimes more than 6 months) after you last saw the veteran. At that point, you no longer remember the vet and it makes it very difficult to answer their questions regarding the vet. For example, I saw a vet Oct 2020 and I just recently received an addendum from the QA regarding that vet - literally 7 months after I saw the vet. 

Time consuming:
Reviewing records can be time consuming (more often than not). Records are sometimes illegible and make it very difficult to read. 

I would say working at VES would sum down to numbers rather than the quality towards the Veterans. Though VES takes care of as many veterans as possible, I would not be surprised to hear from the veteran stating that he was just pushed through without thorough care.

The idea is to evaluate each veteran to help the VA determine their compensation and pension benefits. The providers that were recruited would feel overwhelmed by the amount of claims along with the amount of time needed with the veterans. This was required by the VA.

The workplace and employees working there are great and have the same struggles but are afraid to give suggestions as it could cost their job.

I would say the most enjoyable part of the job was that I felt I was actually making a difference for the veterans. Speaking with them over the phone to schedule their appointments, you can feel their struggle and it empowers you to do more for them and find closer locations to go to rather than going to the VA which most of the time will be over 100 miles away. That was the best part that made me want to stay with the company for as long as I could.
