At GTL you have a fair degree of autonomy in completing projects.  However, multiple mergers and acquisitions have left the company facing many rounds of work force cuts. This has been a multi year operation. Every April the workforce must wonder if they will still be employed. Corporate has done nothing to assuage these very real issues and morale has never been lower. There is a great degree of uncertainty with which products will move forward or be wound down. Corporate has done the bare minimum to address changes to the environment. Over the past 2 years the company has continued to scale back the workforce. Entire offices have been closed and the workforce has been cut in almost every other office. Stability is not to be found. Job advancement opportunities are extremely limited if they exist at all. There is no structure within your own job placement for advancement. You will simply have the same job title with no significant wage increase from year to year.

Healthcare is well below industry standards. Every year of my tenure saw significant rises in premium costs while also providing less coverage. The HR team has been proud of this achievement in company wide emails. They do not understand or concern themselves with the average worker. Many offices still do not have an HR representative on site making communication very difficult. I worked in an office for 6 years that had over 100 people at one point with no HR representation. Staff in this office is fewer than 75 with future cuts likely.

A typical day working for this company in Tutwiler is horrible. I learned absolutely nothing at the company, everything I learned I knew before I got there. Management will not train you or assist you in finding any training. Co-workers at this location are great people to work with. Hardest part of this job is dealing with the warden, he is the worst person to work with. The enjoyable part of the job is the people at this location, they make sure you are feed and informed about everything that's going on. Viapath will not provide any equipment in time and blame you for the equipment not being delivered. I fixed all the phones at the facility and was fired because the warden didn't see me every day after I was there every day of every week. I almost missed my daughter graduation because they scheduled an installation on the date i had informed them about weeks ahead of time. You WILL NOT be allowed too late early for anything. Working on the tablets is nonexistent you are told to ship the damaged tablets back without being trained how to or anything, and tablets will take months to be delivered to the location because the shipping department are years behind. YOU WILL TAKE THE BLAME FOR ANYTHING GOING WRONG WITH THE TABLETS OR PHONES WHEN THE COMPANY AND THE PRISON IS STUCK IN THE STONE AGE.

Don't work for a company with people that are afraid to lead, and do the right thing when necessary. The directors who have people under them, are too worried about being able to work from home to do the right thing. HR seems to run everyone at the company, but not in a way that is safe or helpful. If you can help it, do not get a position where you report to the director of IT security and help desk. The culture at the corporate office is non-existent. There are polite people, but no one goes out to lunch together, happy hours, holiday and group events are not a thing, when I first started I mentioned company get togethers, but the EA and her boss both thought that wouldn't be a good idea. Simply because these people cannot get along with one another. This is an older crowd, these people are all too old, and grey, to bicker like senior citizens in a nursing home. Definitely not an environment I would recommend for a young professional. This Reston, VA office is depressing and they wholeheartedly believe in retaliation and workplace harassment.

Typical day of work is based around conference calls and dealing directly with coworkers and customer base through phone, email and on-site visits. 

I have been able to learn how to be effective in a virtual world. It is a bit of a change from the brick and morter experience to working from home and how to communicate effectively. 

Management is supportive but I have learned being managed in a remote position takes a lot of patience and they have taught me how to be effective through online collaborations. 

Coworkers range from hardcore sales to program teams and third party vendors. Wide range of personalities which has allowed me to change roles quickly. 

The hardest part of my job is not being able to walk down the hall and sit face to face to work out small to growing customer issues. I am also a process person so when there is a gap in the process I have found it can be a challenge from a remote standpoint. 

Being remote and allowing me the freedom to work as much as I want to and balance my home life.

Unequal pay. Uneven workloads all the time. Management does everything possible to not give raises to employees. Management does not care to resolve any in office issues and will tell you to "deal with it on facebook" as sound advice. Horrible and expensive "benefits" that aren't worth having. CEO and executives that pat themselves on the back but show no appreciation for any employees ever. You are only a step on the boss man's ladder. You are barely seen and never heard.

Management and coworkers are unprofessional and cause drama. High turnover rate. No training. No career advancement. Fire people to hire their friends. Run as far away as possible!

In the two years I worked there I had 4 different managers, only one of which I respected for doing a great job (I was only under him for a few months) he left shortly after I did for many of the same reasons.  The company was in a constant state of change, firing people and re-organizing the company structure.  I took issue with the fact that I was being managed by people that did not understand much about what I did. My managers dictated things from far away and did not take the time to understand what was really going on.  An example of the poor management was the fact that one member of a team of 5 was totally unqualified for the job.  Instead of addressing this (I brought this up directly to my managers many times), management did nothing and the remaining team members were left to pick up the slack.  

From my perspective, the company is driven mostly by money and doing things the cheapest way possible regardless of anything else.

Have worked there a year and a half, have yet to reach the promised goals that was promised to me prior to hiring, am constantly doing work that is above my paygrade with little note of compensation.  Townhall meeting company openly admitted to not paying a livable wage.  Company pays just enough to keep you where your at and nothing more.  Notes of apply for these positions only to apply and note oh you can't apply you must be tier 2 in ALL other positions prior.  No time to learn actual roles due to extreme backlog of cases because of company exodus prior year and lack of dedicated training staff. Originally hired with notice of full remote work with possible return to office in a year or two, only to have 3 months later mandatory return to office and constant bombardment of what is wrong and no clear cut guidance or support.

ViaPath has been a wonderful place to work for the last three years. They have provided me with tuition reimbursement, career guidance, and room to grow. They work hard to ensure we have great benefits. Even when the premiums increased in both 2022 and 2023 for our insurance, the company absorbed the additional costs, refusing to pass it on to employees, which is greatly appreciated. I enjoy coming to work and have fantastic coworkers.  
Deb Alderson is a wonderful CEO who has changed the mission of the company to one that has great purpose and a huge impact on the lives of our customers. The last two years in a row, Ms. Alderson has supported our customers as well as their friends and family, by sponsoring one child that has a parent who is incarcerated for every ViaPath employee. (the company has around 1,300 employees) I appreciate the way the company gives back to the community. 

High level of competency required.  Pretty typical workdays, hitting delivery dates is extremely important, missing a date is a cardinal sin. Developing code in this type of environment is extremely challenging.  There are very few people that have knowledge of the full scope of the software in use, it was custom written from the ground up.  This provided me with a hands on development environment that allowed me to gain a good background in the latest technology with regards to SIP, VOIP, and Android Development in general.  The hardest part of the job was getting other departments to share information on their respective pieces of technology.  The most enjoyable part of the job is the constant learning required to keep up.
