I am thrilled to share my positive experiences of working as a Community Health Worker (CHW) with Volunteers of America. Since joining this esteemed organization, I have been privileged to witness firsthand the impactful and meaningful work we do in serving communities and individuals in need.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a CHW with Volunteers of America is the opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of others. Whether it's providing vital health education, advocating for access to essential services, or offering emotional support and encouragement, every interaction with our clients leaves a lasting impact. Knowing that our efforts contribute to improving the health and well-being of those we serve fills me with a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.

I kept a daily logbook (just like at the shelter), I logged in medications when they were brought in by clients (just like at the shelter), and I monitored the activities and chores of the clients (just like at the shelter). I also inventoried the office & cleaning supplies as they were delivered.

I learned that those in higher supervisory positions sometimes have no tolerance for physical limitations. I was "volunteered" to walk w/ the clients to a park several blocks away in spite of having edema in my right leg (fluid retention). When I expressed my inability to do so, that was used against me to eventually discharge me coupled w/ another minor lapse in memory due to the stress of juggling two jobs (one client's medications were not logged as soon as they arrived).

I was also working at the shelter during my tenure at the VOA, and if I rested at all, I got immediately drowsy. This was witnessed by the new Program Manager, and that was just another nail in the coffin. I was on the verge of leaving the shelter and moving into my own place when the non-paying job at the shelter cost me the job at the VOA because both positions had me spread too thin.

For the most part my co-workers were very sociable and supportive. Even the upper management was equally able to show team spirit. However, this one new Program Manager (immediate supervisor) had it in for me from her 1st day. I could see it in her eyes.

The culture here at VOA Mid-States is amazing! Each employee in their own way represents our amazing core values and standards. Since being here, I've been treated well, like I belong. And have been supported by an amazing manager and professional team. 

The most enjoyable part of my job other than talking and working my colleagues, is helping the company run better through the initiatives I take in my role. I enjoy bringing ideas to the table and I enjoy helping my team help others. 

The least enjoyable part would be that it can get pretty busy. But that can happen and does happen at any job. My team is good at leveraging the load so that way we all are well taken care of. I love that.  

Being here, I've learned I am not alone. Being here, I've helped others including our clients feel less alone. Our managers go above and beyond to help us succeed in our role and provide our clients with access to resources that on their own would be hard to obtain. 

Volunteers of America is a company where you are responsible for the basic living needs Transportation feeding personal care of others however their staff is not compensated in vacation your benefits for themselves this job can be very stressful and burn out very easily with certain clients the overall well-being of the staff just not taking into consideration due to the stressfulness that comes with this job however as I have stated the work can be very rewarding pertaining to the clients do you need to be personal days more vacation days and definitely pay raises so that the staff can make sure they're taken care of dealing with the things they have to deal with on a daily basis.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the clients. It is wonderful to see their progress and to see them Change for the better. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The expectations that the supervisor team has for their employees. There is not enough staff for the amount of clients that we had to attend to. The hours are long (with no scheduled breaks). The job is extremely stressful and tremendous amount of drama. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment is drama, their policies and what they are "supposed" to stand for is absolutely wonderful, but that is only in a perfect world. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very long. Very stressful. And extremely exhausting.

Dishonest. This place will feed you lies. The people in the office discuss employee to other employees. The RSC and home managers/home leads are very unprofessional. They don't answer the phone when you call and they will NOT return your phone call as well. They RSCs promote their friends within the conpany. They pay is God awful. No opportunities for advancement or raises unless you are a friend of the people in the office. The turn over rate is high. Before I came to the house I worked in, 8 people had quit. The managers/home leads harrass their employees.  My girlfriend also worked for them and she had to file an harrassment complaint. The RSCs and other coordinators are very discourteous, disrespectful, irresponsible, and inconsiderate. I wouldn't advise anyone to work for Volunteers of America in the Memphis, TN. area. Think twice before applying.

•	Responsible for performing a variety of work in general maintenance and repair of building facilities and equipment.
•	Resolves minor and major mechanical repairs or aesthetic issues. Performs minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, flush valves, plunge toilets, paint and/or wallpaper, and carpet repairs. Occasional tile work and water disaster cleanup may be required.
•	Performs general building preventative maintenance on HVAC, electrical, lighting, plumbing, doors, locks and hardware. Maintains environmental conditions.
•	Checks lights and changes light bulbs/ballasts as need. Walks all vacant suites to insure they are clean and market ready.
•	Ensures quick response per company policy if on-call duties are required and responds appropriately to the building automation and security, fire, life and safety systems.

Management is not efficient, the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing. Micromanagement is heavy there because Management in place is highly insecure and lack skills.Good luck getting promoted because Its done on favoritism....even positions requiring degrees don’t have degree holders in them. You’ll be buried in paperwork because everything requires about 3forms to be filled out. Every event in the company seems mandatory because that’s the only way employees will attend them.

 It’s very much a high school immature culture and a lot of two faced he said she said going on. Don’t bother following the chain of command because they’re just as corrupted as the bottom. The pay isn’t that good either, hopefully you feel rewarded intrinsically. No fair equal treatment there.  The turn over is high for a reason.

I was an employee for 2 years and spent holidays, nights and weekends trying to prove my dedication to an organization who did not care about their workers. I finally got a raise after a year and a half then had it taken away do to budget cuts. Very bias upper management and witnessed discrimination on several occasions. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. 
I had to leave work in an ambulance one day due to a heart condition and was being called on the hospital room telephone the same night to see if I would be at work the next morning.
Very unprofessional and uncaring people.

I've been in my job at VOA Mid-States for 2 years now, and it has been a fantastic job. The culture is great, and I work with very supportive colleagues. The mission of VOA Mid-States makes me feel that I am actually making a difference in the lives of those we serve. I've been able to really grow in my career and have professional development opportunities that I have not been offered in the past. There is also a lot of transparency from senior leadership about any issues and where the organization is going.
