Voorhees Pediatric Facility

I only worked there for maybe 3 months and it was h3ll. Working as an LPN there you are basically a glorified CNA. They hire LPNs because we are a one-stop shop. Each shift you are either a Med nurse or a Floor nurse. Both jobs equally as strenuous.🙄 As a med nurse you have about 30 pts, you are responsible for pouring and starting all feedings in the pump for the entire shift. You have to crush and push all meds through the pts feeding tubes. Each pt gets about 10 meds a pass. The first day I passed meds I was on my feet the entire 12hrs. When you are a floor nurse during a shift you can have anywhere from 7-10 pts depending on staffing. You are responsible for continuing all feedings after the med nurse starts them, countless treatments(temp checks q4hrs, bear warmers on cold kids, mafos, tlsos etc.) 3-4 changes a night depending on the child(mostly all pts are bed bound and total care). You have to do bed baths and showers by yourself, dress and get ups into the wheelchairs.  It’s way too much on your body some days i would get off of work and sleep the whole 12 hours until my next shift.🤦🏽‍♀️

VPF is truly a special career environment.  Our location is a pediatric facility which provides long term care for technology/medically dependent children of all ages.  We provide 24 hr nursing and respiratory staff.  We also provide medical day care and Therapeutic Rec, on & off site OT, PT Speech therapy care.  We reach the true spirit of each child and bring forth the ability to communicate as well as achieve as much independence as possible.  Our work environment is well structured.  Department heads are easy to communicate with as they are right on site with you. You will use all of your skills plus learn so much more perspective.  You can balance work, school and family.  My role is processing the payroll so my work flow and meeting required deadlines are important!

VPF brought me in with out a back ground screening, working in a hospital setting you would think they would have had a more thorough on boarding.  Sadly they bring you in performing jobs that have nothing to do with the position. Few employees more work so bottom line management can make high salaries. It is not safe, the state really needs to come in and inspect the facility. They have no respect for their employees, giving them health insurance that is great for the corporate office but NJ employees can not even go to NJ doctors or hospitals. Expected to work 365 days no holidays, no bonus for working holidays. Bad place to work. Within one year 8 employees have come and gone in the HR dept.

They do not tell you prior to accepting the position as a nurse that you are doing CNA work. 75% of staff are toxic mean nurses who are burnt out and only stay because the pay is good. You will lose any nursing skills you actually have because all you're doing is aide work. Good luck getting on the med cart because preference is given to the nurses who like the cart and have been there the longest, same for the compartmentalized units where you would actually be doing real nurse work. The overnight staff sleep and leave residents unattended for HOURS, and some of the staff call the residents who are unresponsive with trachs and vents as "the dead kids". The lack of compassion and care is abhorrent.

RUN! This is not some where you want to work. Administration does not care about the employees. Current employees are leaving left and right .  There is no work life balance. Good luck trying to get a vacation ! Everything goes by seniority. Which forces you to call out and earn a write up . Please do not have any emergencies at this job. If you have to leave the job early , they will write you up . You will learn something’s but not enough to advance your skill set. It is not your typical LTC facility. Please don’t let the pay rate fool you. You will work for it. Nurses are on the floor like cna’s. Some of the nurses “eat their young.” & can be very mean/condescending. It’s not a healthy environment at all. 

I truly feel I was lied to about my job. I thought it was helping the employees but I am being asked to do things out of my realm of expertise and have challenges and no support by the leadership. I am on my own. It is not a team environment. The pay and benefits were very misleading. We have benefits that are not supported by NJ physicians or hospitals. The union controls the facility and dictates to mngt how the facility operates. The admin is also not supportive. Stress level is through the roof with the supervisors. Not a place I would recommend at all. Good luck!

Unfortunately, this used to be an excellent place to work - the original owner truly cared for the staff and the residents despite being a for profit organization. Presently, it is purely profit driven and all about presenting a "we are a diversified company - we hire a diverse staff".  Laziness and outright disrespect for policies and procedures, staff handbook guidelines are ignored due to 'diversity'.  Professionalism is severely lacking as is being held accountable for not doing your job.  HR is more concerned with sweeping bad workers under the carpet and crucifying honest, truthful employees. Thrilled to be out of here, but miss the kids.

The workload. The benefits are so bad and they get worse every year. Management is the worst 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It’s a toxic, blame game work environment. You can’t properly take care of the kids because you have an overwhelming amount of work to do. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You get to work. Your assignment if 7-8 total care kids that are all in wheelchairs. As a nurse you do all the care and treatments and feedings.

You do the same work as a CNA you never have supplies your always borrowing meds from other patients including narcs always short staffed you pay union fees high health insurance copay if you value your license it's not the place for you

The moment I walk in the door, I'm already welcomed by staff, and patients. I learned a lot about teamwork, and communication skills. Staff was very organized with time, and events. You get to play toys, and interact with the children. Everyone is always on a move, and always cautious. But its very upbeat. The hardest part of the job has to be when the child is crying. The most enjoyable part of the job is that I get to meet new people, and when the kids smile.
