WSFS Bank

Overall, working for WSFS Bank was an amazing experience. It was my first and only time working in the world of banking and started out incredible. As a Personal Banker, the Retail Office Manager I had guided me in the right direction. She sent me to the right networking events, gave me insight on how she climbed the ladder to success, and genuinely cared about my career growth even if that meant losing me to another branch or department. I was promoted three times within the first year - year and a half, including a department switch. There was occasionally a lack of communication between departments, but that can be common especially as companies grow and it rarely hindered the customer experience. Outside of the branch, however, management seemed to be very political, definitely showed favoritism, and some supervisors/managers seemed to care only for their own career goals/advancements... even if that meant throwing you under the bus or claiming your ideas as their own. During COVID is when that side of the card started to shine through. It became a very stressful and somewhat hostile working environment. That may only be my perception, as these things are often subjective and I absolutely know the part I played leading to my leaving the company.  Regardless, to this day I still recommend people to apply to the company as well as continue to refer clients to conduct their finances at WSFS.


There's a fun atmosphere that's genuine, legitimate, and authentic. Then there's faux, manufactured, "forced" fun. Unfortunately, WSFS falls into the latter category. It has a great history but over the past several years it is failing to retain good talent while becoming a sales-driven bank (like every other bank) and not focusing on the basics of what customers really want in a bank: A place they can trust to put their money, trust with good financial advice, and not getting sales pressured. 

The culture is night-and-day between the branches and back office, who probably enjoy their jobs more and seem to have a better time of it than the branch personnel do. 

The CEO is too busy touring around taking photos of his travels to focus on absorbing three banks in three years and helping steer the ship to success.

The bank can be very successful in Philadelphia but, like every other regional to large bank, it falls into the trappings of focusing on brand and slogans while not giving its talent confidence and the space to be successful. The communication from higher levels on down has been atrocious and inconsistent, again focusing on the wrong things.

WSFS Bank's leadership cares about its employees (called "Associates"). The company culture emphasizes that if Associates are treated well it will carry through to improved customer satisfaction. Right from the start, there is ample training and development. There are plenty of programs designed to maximize work-life balance, great medical benefits, and paid time off. The bank is also constantly growing, through acquisitions, which translates to job security.

However, the incredible culture doesn't always trickle down to the individual business units. The culture of whichever manager is in charge supersedes it. Also, because of the bank's ever-expanding footprint, your development will be put on the back burner because the company is constantly preparing for another acquisition; and, in the calm between mergers, the opportunities for advancement are non-existent if you can't work in the center of Wilmington or Philadelphia.

Overall, it is a great company if you are looking for a stable workplace that cares about you...but are not interested in career development or advancement. 

Horrible benefits- they refuse to cover spouses if the spouse could obtain health insurance literally anywhere else. The benefit information provided was different than what was actually offered and it wasn’t clear during open enrollment (the out of pocket max was 5 digits more than they had originally said!!) which was never apologized for or explained why the info packet was different. 

I did not receive a cost of living raise (let alone an actual raise!) but they insisted I return to office after being fully remote. But the department is spread across several offices so collaboration is still online

Unclear policies on PTO (they only pay out the entire month worked upon leaving) and how much PTO is needed to be used during disability. 

My boss definitely tried to be flexible for things like docs appts but corporate clearly tried to limit their ability to be flexible

Relatively high turn over, which they seemed unbothered by. Management/corporate is a major issue here

Company was an ok place to work for initially, the focus was selling through service but that was just a facade. They want you to sell everything you can to customers even if they don’t want it. If a customer comes in for a checking account , they want you to tell them what else they will be receiving which really doesn’t  give them an option to say no. This improves your cross-sell in order to try to meet performance standard which is a definite struggle to make if you’re a Personal Banker 2 or higher. Oh, you also get no incentive for meeting performance standard. One of the biggest challenges the company has that I see is a lack of diversity. If I had to guess, I’d say the make up is about 95% White, 3% Hispanic, 1% Back and 1% Other. The company needs to address this issue along with making sure the bank operates the same way in all of the regions. In addition, they also need to revisit their incentive program so that it works for every branch and just the busier ones.

It's an okay place to work. They will sell you in the interview that it's a good place to work and maintain a good work/life balance. It's not. Management rides you for sales in a short staffed branch where customers wait forever because some transactions take a while to complete and it's tough keeping up when there's only 2 people in there. 
Personally, I think they need to vet their managers a little better because the one I have is very disrespectful, condescending and not helpful at all. When your employees dread going to work every day then maybe take a look in the mirror. When you leave for the day you don't want to talk to or see anyone because you're drained and stressed from disrespectful customers to a manager that you're afraid to ask questions or for help. 
If you plan on having a life outside of work you probably shouldn't try to work here.

I have to admit, accounting has never been my strong suit. Although I generally liked all of my coworkers and superiors, the way the systems and rules worked often left me very confused and frustrated. The customers were very kind and so were the managers... for the most part. As an intern I was unable to do many of the functions full-time employees were able to do, which left many customers feeling frustrated when I was forced to tell them to wait for someone else assist them. Not only that, but I was always asked to work Friday and Saturday which wouldn't be an issue if I were not working 10 hours on Friday and then from 8-3:30pm on Saturday. This is a great place to work... permanently. As an intern I often felt left out and useless, but the environment was very supportive. 

WSFS claims to be a bank that views its employees as "more than just a number"....yeah right. If you have anything to complain about at all, you might as well start looking for a new job. That's exactly what happened to me. My complaints about one of their training staff went not just completely unheeded, but I was basically told that this guy had been working with them for ten plus years, so shut up. They "chose to transition me from the bank" due to two minor customer complaints, where my actions were backed by company policy. There was little coaching. There was no probation period or suspension. No. Instead, they chose to fire a bride who was only 54 days away from her wedding at the time, and also a diabetic who was on their insurance benefits without any warning.

I started with WSFS and absolutely loved the company and everything that it stood for. I am now in the process of quitting and looking for another job. With that being said, I absolutely still believe that WSFS is a good company. However, the contact center is not a good department. You wear many hats in that department. People call for loans, you are expected to talk to the customers about their loan…without ANY training about loans. There arent many other departments. YOU ARE THE DEPARTMENT… which doesn’t make sense when you don’t train properly. It is also way more sales based than what you will be told! Another example of overworked and underpaid. I wish I could have stuck it out because I really do love the company. I just don’t recommend working in the contact center. 

This company really provides you with all the tools to succeed. The products offered are easy to sell and although there are goals to reach there’s more focus on the behaviors than the actual numbers. Wsfs offers tuition reimbursement which is very easy to take advantage of and great programs like toastmasters to help with personal development as well. My only real complaint is the lack of non personal banker opportunities in southern Delaware. If you want to move up as a personal banker or even transition to management you’re good to go but if you want to specialize in loans, security, etc you’re looking at the Wilmington/Newark area
