I work on a telemetry observation medical surgical unit. 
Pay details
The starting pay for RNs is 27.50. 
However, they have other pay incentives especially during staffing shortages. If I pick up an extra shift, I make about $70 an hour plus a flat bonus. I usually end up making $1000 per extra shift I pick up. For Christmas they gave us a $75 Walmart gift card.
They have a sign on bonus/retention contract bonus. 5k for 1 year, 10k for 2 years, and 15k for 3 years. 1st payout check is issued with your 1st paycheck. It is taxed so u get about $3200. I'll end up making around 90k this year with all the extra shift incentives and bonuses. Paid every 2 weeks. 
Culture:
Coworkers are amazing and my unit operates as a team. Management rarely helps us out on the floor and will occasionally come around and ask us if we need anything.
Management does seem to care about employees and they do take our suggestions. They've recently implemented a quarterly report that identifies the issues staff is concerned about and what management is doing to try to resolve those issues. Issues that they can't solve for whatever reason, they explain why that process or system can't be changed. 
Holidays:
We work either the eve of the holiday or the day of the holiday and rotate ie if I work Christmas eve, I will work New Years day. You get paid 24 hours X your hourly rate for working a holiday day, and get paid 8 hours X your hourly rate. You can use payroll for gift shop (gift shop sells all kinds of wvu apparel and jackets u can wear at work). We get a discount at the cafeteria but not payroll deducted. Btw the cafeteria food is GROSS!!!
Scheduling:
They offer 8, 10, or 12 hour shifts and if you want to work an extra 4 hours they'll do that. They use Kronos for scheduling and you can self schedule. Ratios on my floor are 1:6. You can get pulled to another floor without notice. 
Benefits:
Insurance is so/so. It's Anthem BCBS. You can buy the 80% plan or 90% plan. I pay $80 a month for health, dental, and vision insurance. Vision insurance is great! I got an eye exam, bifocal glasses with all the extra lens coatings and a pair of prescription RayBan sunglasses for $400. If u get sick at work u can go to employee health and they'll treat u while at work. Offer tuition/student loan assistance. Free tuition for employees after 3 years service. They provide a ton of opportunities to earn CTEs and it's free, and you can do it during work hours. They require an easy way to keep up your CPR by using RQI which are dummies that are connected to a computer and are set up around the hospital to do your skills portion of CPR. You can do it without having to have an instructor present. You have to recertify quarterly. 
New Grads:
They started a new grad residency for RNs this year. I hate it. I was thrown into it automatically as it started after I was hired. It's a 4 hour snooze fest once a month. It would be helpful for new grads who have zero experience on the floor. After being on the floor 6 months then having to go to those seminars, I find it boring and the subject matter are things I already know and have been doing for 6 months. They assign a preceptor and transition coordinator for every new grad. That person checks in with u regularly to make sure u have everything u need to do your job. They can arrange additional education, in services, and observation days in other departments. During those classes, etc you will be paid your normal rate unless you're in over time territory. Or if u just need someone to vent to, they'll do that. 
Cons and things I HATE:
Every patient has a different random hospitality. There's no rhyme or reason as to what hospitalist is assigned to what patients. Doctors do NOT include nurses in rounding and most of the time they sneak in, see the patient, and sneak out without even letting us know they were there. When the doctor sees the patient without my knowledge, I usually find out HOURS later because a progress note pops up. This is the most frustrating thing about working here. The physicians NEVER round at the same time and a lot of the time, they don't talk with the patient about their plan of care. This results in me having to take tons of time contacting the doctor and trying to find out what the plan is and then having to explain it to the patient without having knowledge of timeline. We go on diversion frequently and discharges are FORCED onto us at a rapid pace. I've had 5/6 patients discharged by 0800 (1 hour into shift) and management breathing down my neck to hurry up and discharge. Management will sometimes "help" by typing up and printing the discharge paperwork then give the paper work to me and make me go remove the IV, Tele, and explain discharge instructions. This does NOTHING to help. It puts more pressure on me. Management lets night shift get away with anything and not even half do their jobs. Everything falls on day shift. 
Verdict:
I love working at WVU Medicine (in a hospital inpatient setting) My paycheck every 2 weeks is around 3500 after taxes. I usually work 4 or 5 days a week. There's opportunity to work 3 days a week or as many as you'd like to pick up. Calling off is super easy. 


The pay is good, but the working environment isn’t great. If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “I want to work for a group of proverbial yes-men,” then this job is for you. Management in the security department have really little say around the hospital. When it comes to duties around the hospital, management will say yes to pretty much anything and then scrutinize the officers when they’re spread too thin or mandate officers from shifts to cover down on these things.

Speaking of accounts the department would rather tussle with the idea of getting flashlights for our firearms and new holsters instead of getting winter coats. Yes, we’re issued a rain parka type jacket but it’s not a substitute during the winter months when the weather approaches or falls below 0. I’ve worked here for some time and the only time I’ve even been close to using my weapon is once, I’ve never been in a position where a light would be useful attached to my weapon. By the way they also issue you a pretty good flashlight. 

When it comes to matters of security and policies, they only enforce policies when convenient. Depending on the status of the person performing infractions they’ll bring out a cross to crucify them if they’re low enough on the employment roster or tell you to look the other way. Doctors, directors, and people of senior management level can pretty much do whatever they want because security management doesn’t want to deal with the blowback of enforcing policies equally towards them. So expect to eat your words if you try to enforce the policies that the management have written to a person who makes more money than they do. 

On top of everything there’s not an original thought among them. If you’ve ever have an idea or try to make something better for everyone it will be shot down, or in my case physically ripped down, only to be later reintroduced and rebranded as their idea. 

The perception of the department is also just as flimsy as the rest of the areas in the department. We don’t want to “present a militarized front” but they expect us to conduct ourselves in such a manner. They deck us out in cheap “LAPD blue” outfits like law enforcement LARPers but we have no authority. The hospital is private property with general free use to the public but we aren’t allowed to remove an offender from the premises. Instead we have to call local law enforcement to do it for us which, depending on the department, is as useless as we are in the situation. (The worst is MPD, WVSP are awesome)

The best part about working for the department is the officers. People who are on the bottom of the department hierarchy who share the same struggles as you. They are a mad conglomerate of experiences and personable people who are just putting their heads down and trying to get through the day. Leads are a different story, most of them are so fed up with trying to justify what management is doing without concrete reasoning that the frustration they experience usually bleeds downward onto the officers. 

We do get to shoot and or run scenarios in a simulator once a month so that’s a plus.

The OR at WVUH was split between two floors. 2-West usually did most of the elective and general surgeries, smaller and less complicated procedures, while 5-North seemed to consist of organized chaos. Walking through the halls you could hear drills being used, the faint smell of flesh burning, beepers and phones ringing, and yet somehow this was an everyday lifestyle. It was peaceful. It was what drove us. A typical day began a large cup of coffee from our lounge, followed by a morning meeting to catch the assignments for the day, making sure my wireless phone was posted in every room and was fully charged. Waiting for calls was like waiting for a ticking time bomb, when a doctor needed something, they needed it now. Equipment and Jackson-Pratt beds constantly roamed the halls looking for their homes in the perspective operating rooms. Sterile fields were being maintained while patients arrived. and then surgery began. I ever knew what type of call I was going to receive, what errand I needed to run, where I needed to take this above the knee amputation. It was always a surprise. The hardest part of the job was learning to prioritize between every room and surgery, creating time management and becoming efficient at how I did it. As the surgery was over, the operating room was left empty with the sounds of the anesthesia monitors beeping, blanket rolls, and enough debris on the floor to fill a landmine. Tearing down was just getting starting. I liked to work as a team, helping each other clean the rooms and taking surgical instruments downstairs to processing, setting the room back up for the next surgery. It was quite a feat. Knowing your next move was crucial, but the unthinkable could occur at anytime and it always did. Countless times, with a full OR, we received a trauma that was brought up immediately for surgery. This could mean life or death. Everyone worked together. I fetched blood from the blood bank, warm blankets, warm fluids, sterile instruments and packages. All the while waiting to see what and how the doctors and nurses were going to save this persons' life. The most enjoyable part of experiencing this job for me was understanding that every single person played an integral part in a surgery of someones life, that hopefully changed their life for the better. Maybe I wasn't performing surgery, but I got to see it and take part in saving someones life, and that is an amazing thing to witness. Each job is what you personally make of it. The work may be tough, it may be strenuous, and there may be times where you just do not want to do it that day, but when I sit and think about the lives that I can touch through health care, all that changes. It makes me want to be better. And this job taught me that.

A typical day can range from a high pace, high flow day.  Consisting with a lot of interaction with the needs services of your patients.  On the other hand, you may have low flow or a mixture of both depending on the volume of patients discharge or admitted.  Your day starts with receiving the report from the previous employee and interacting with the patients and/or the patients' guests and checking for changes within your report, Next, meeting and assisting the needs of patient including toilette, consumption, and general service.  Following your service, you're required to data entry activity, consumption, toilette, changes that occur with that patient, vital, and the collection of some lab specimens or measurements.  Including reporting to the nurse you're work under.
Management is helpful,  attempting to keep the CA's consistent with the rule and regulation of healthcare involving the assistants, and require for them to maintain or improve their appearance based on the policies set by the upper levels of nursing and the hospital.  See and meet all patients needs in a timely fashion, accuracy record patients information, and stay up to date on the hospital training refresher courses. 
Your co worker will make or break you at this job.  While asking for help is the hardest for most it could maintain you longevity and health at this job.  It's like a coin flip when working, because the co workers can boast your morale or break it.  Allow for you to ease the burden of difficult patient tasks or complicate the task.
Dealing with people and looking into to your own mortality is the hardest thing about this job.  The work is hard but people can make it worse much worse.  Also, seeing some of these patient in their most weaken state, with some idea of their formal self, may cause you to doubt your own health..
However, dealing with people and learning the possible direction to take if you would like to advance your career is the most enjoyable part of this job.  People from all walks of life have came to this job and used it as a stepping stone to find a career that suits their needs. As for dealing with people; you may find yourself interacting with formal patients or families and receiving thanks for your service.  The fact that you see them in a bar, store, or etc. but are getting around without your help or assistant is possibly the most rewarding part of this job..

When I was hired here, it was embellished as this fantastic workplace with great morale and a sense of teamwork.. boy what a story. 

     Upper management in the nursing department is completely oblivious to the concerns and/or consequences of their decisions on the floor nurses (or they just don’t care). Since 2 local hospitals closed, WVU Reynolds was flooded with nurses from those hospital, many jobs were posted and HR hired in a slew of those nurses.. which is great. HOWEVER, they dismissed internal applicants who were applying for transfer to other departments. Loyal employees who had been at this facility for years were pushed aside for new hires for publicity purposes. Sure does look great when the local news station can talk about how Reynolds is hiring all those displaced nurses. 

     This is all separate from the fact that the floors are so unbelievably short staffed, but not on Monday mornings! Day shifts through the week are over staffed, and weekends and night shifts are never appropriately staffed for safety. This is a management problem 100%. Schedules should not be put out with these kinds of issues. Managers wanting to be Best friends with the staff instead of doing their duties as a manager and appropriately staffing the departments on all shifts. There are constant calls coming in on days off at obscure hours begging for help.

     The 5th floor, the skilled nursing unit, closed without any notice because they decided to turn it into a psych unit when OVMC closed.  Psych is something this area desperately needs, but it was done in such an abrupt and brutal way. Staff were offered positions elsewhere in the hospital or else it was just ‘good luck’. There is no concern for the staff here. The third floor is constantly closing one department and moving patients back and forth between their ICU and Tele units. Then they call us up from the med-surg floor to cover their staffing gaps.  
     
     Finally, the staff attitudes towards one another is sickeningly caddy, disrespectful, and downright mean. I have not gone through one handoff report that didn’t include a snide remark from another staff member. There is no benefit or recognition for doing a good job and there is no punishment for doing a poor one. No advancement opportunities. I left another one of WVUs hospitals to come here because it was closer to home for me and there is just no comparison between the two. 

They slapped the WVU label on a local rum-dumb hospital and hoped for the best.. big mistake for WVU’s reputation.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good benefits package, ample parking with the new garages built, friendly work areas, discount deals for WVU sports offered, and tuition reimbursement. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Many areas are grossly understaffed and the management will throw work into laps without conversation regarding it. Pay is exceptionally worse than other hospitals of similar size. Insurance while affordable with benefits offers no ability to be seen outside the WVU system of hospitals making traveling or sending kids to out of state colleges difficult as the insurance doesn’t provide much or any coverage for that. Management teams are uneducated mainly and hold roles for multiple years without expanding their reach in learning the roles they oversee. Many managers are hired off the street with little to no hospital background. This makes work harder and makes things stressful. The facilities are also running thing differently across the system so one will work one way then another will do it the complete opposite. The teams are never on the same page with the process and work. The facility doesn’t recognize hard work or above and beyond performance unless you are making them look good. While you won’t see recognition or compensation for doing more work or working another role while doing your own you will not see any benefit or gain in moving into higher roles as they will see you too valuable to lead but more valuable to follow and do the work. Training is non-existent in many areas and the teams who are hired to train are so poorly trained themselves it makes the job even harder to complete. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic work environment. Some areas could be better than some. The environment mainly is work everyone else’s jobs and your own and you’ll be okay. Reporting to HR causes retaliation and while the company promotes it has a no retaliation policy the management team gets around that while the HR team who is overworked with expectations that are unrealistic and possible will let it slide as they know if something was done it would hurt the balance of how the hospital supports management over people. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful and full of anger and grief.

At initial interview I informed them I was certified by the American Heart Association to teach both BLS & ACLS.  I was never given the opportunity to keep those credentials current.  (For the record, the AHA seriously needs to look into who controls CPR training at this facility.)  Thanks to management & the education department at this facility, my credentials to teach CPR & ACLS expired.  Recently I renewed my CPR provider course @ a major teaching acute care facility in the area & thoroughly enjoyed it & am waiting on the availability of a CPR instructor course.  Following that I will go through another ACLS provider & instructor course.
While @ SFH I felt as if I were continually being "set up to fail" by management.  I was "oriented" by the most malignant personality I have ever encountered . . . a person who had been fired from every facility in the area but "flourished" here.  Management continually hired the most "pathologic" personalities they could.  They continually set me up with the most subversive, non-supporting staff imaginable.  When I would try to convey my concerns to management the response I got was that I wasn't the first to bring the same complaints about the same people.  (I understand that since I left, other new employees have made the same complaints about the same people that I did.)
I went there with a strong background in critical care & surgery.  Never once was I made to feel those credentials were relevant.
Employee health is non-existant.  Upon initial hiring I informed them that I would need periodic CXR rather that PPD.  NOT ONCE did they ever in my employment call me for a CXR.  Also upon hiring, it was discovered my hepatitis vaccine was sub-therapeutic & again they NEVER offered that to me.
When I made efforts to approach my department head nurse with my concerns, it was always the same response.  She would sit down, take out a pencil, & start writing as I talked.  (More senior staff told me this was routine & that I should not expect too much.)  This individual would not allow me to mention specific issues with another staff member because that person was not there to defend them selves.  However, that very staff member was allowed to commandeer an entire staff meeting to complain about her opinion of my performance without me being present.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Terrible management in er registration. Extremely hostile environment w 1 person causing issues & nothing is addressed. Supposed to work shift work & certain ppl get set dsy shift for yrs! Been there a lot longer than those ppl. And we have to do soo much more than the job i was hired for. Relieving switchboard, Outpatient registration things & admissions & triage desk. And waiting on a work schedule to come out1-2 days before the last. Ppl need to have a life & make appts & figure out childcare. Unacceptable on every level! Pay is way below standard! Should start at 18.03  & ppl been thr 4+ yrs supposed to be making 21-23 an hour. And casual employees should say wht days & times they r available with option to pick up hours.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Multiple other jobs put on ER reg. Its entirely too much unnecessary work on us when this Organization should make departments take care of their own things. We our the busiest ER in the Tri State & to have us running around like crazy ppl whn we have Traumas & Squads coming in, is absolute poor management across the board. Very sad that it all is about Greed!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture is great if u are able to make friends. The ER reg dept needs a complete overhaul its actually stupid no one has seen the turn over rate in this dept!  We physically & mentally as busy as we r do not need more of other peoples jobs dumped on us. It is not mentally healthy thr amount of stress put on our dept. and no recognition ever! Without Reg. Your hospital does not get paid! And, u dont knw the amount of patients discharged before we ever have a chance to register them! So means no money for your hospital!  Thr is to much put on us! Each dept should be responsible for checking thr ppl in & i have no clue why we have to relieve switchboard! Its insanity

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Complete Stressful & unnecessary things thats need to be done by the departments you work in. ER registration can not do everything

This hospital is one of the worst places I have ever worked. There is no room for advancement unless you get on you know someone (i have multiple forms of proof) and throw any experience you have or seniority out the window because it does not matter. Training is a joke, they literally say you will be trained and ready for your job but in actuality you are thrown in unprepared with insufficient training. Most of my coworkers were amazing, they want what is best for the patients but management could care less. Also do not dare to think about doing what is best for a patient or the facility because you will get wrote up for the most ridiculous reasons that will keep you in your role so you can't change positions. If you even make mention to your supervisor/manager  that you want to move within the organization you better expect a write up pretty soon after because their whole goal is to keep you where you're at or fire you. They do not care if you have a family and need a different schedule even though you never call off abd don't ask for more pay, but if you're a student prepare for them to do whatever you ask because they love turn over. Also WVU medicine security is the biggest joke I've ever seen, their manager thinks he's law enforcement and expects his employees to behave as such.  

I can say I learned a lot in the many years I was here before I gave my notice. I learned how not to treat people, how to do everyone's work and they then get promoted with 0 education and experience, I learned that they choose which policies will be enforced when it benefits them, I also learned that hardworking people trying to provide for their family are apparently worthless in the eyes of WVU medicine. Stay away from this organization if you want any type of growth with a company.

After several years of working here, I hate to give a negative review but I hope it saves someone from the same fate. 

The pay isn't even anywhere near competitive. Not close compared to the nearest hospital and several dollars below most courier jobs. That's why they don't post wages online. I took this because I thought there was more opportunity, which I was wrong.

Over the years of repetitive work, I eventually ended up with a workplace illness which was clear because it's the primary side I carried items on. I believe because I scheduled a doctors appointment to verify the issue instead of talking to employee health first, I had zero assistance from the company. No one seemed to know anything on the process and it took until my exit interview that I was given an option on how to ease my workload. Unfortunately because this office is ALWAYS understaffed, it meant I was working 6 days a week with nerve damage, which is completely miserable. The only replies I ever got was, "I hope you get better". For being a hospital, they don't act like they care about people. Even after being in multiple car accidents (Not at fault), I wasn't told I needed to see employee health. With the workplace illness, I was told that my doctors appointments are a problem (despite a month notice 90% of the time), they have a business to run. 

I was forced to see a WVU doctor who didn't want to help after I mentioned workers comp. She only threw meds at me that made me sick. The garbage insurance locked me in so I couldn't see another doctor. In the end I was getting worse and was basically forced out. I chose my health over the company.

They have no long term staff for a reason.
