you aren't allowed to; leave your assigned zone (usually a single gallery), you aren't allowed to draw, read, sit, walk too fast, drink, eat, go to the bathroom, talk to coworkers, look at phones, not know what time it is, leave your assigned position within the zone, voice concerns with management.

some requirements are; a strong bladder, low appetite, ability to stand in one spot 4-12 hours, a visual range that can bend multiple corners so as to see the entire zone you are personally responsible for, the ability to remember to ask over the walkie talkies permission before you do anything, willingness to protect the art at all cost even though your job is not security, 

Working at the Walker might seem like a fun and progressive place to work, but it is an extremely siloed, toxic, and low-paid environment. We started a union to help combat the negative aspects of the Walker. There isn't any opportunity to grow unless you are already in a position of power. The assumption is that each employee should be grateful for the opportunity to work at this museum, so it doesn't matter how little you are paid. They are also notorious for taking well over a year to hire vacant positions, so if someone leaves you are expected to take on loads of extra work with no additional pay or support. I would not recommend anyone work here. 

staff is overworked, management does little to make a supportive and fair working environment for employees vocal about the toll the work takes emotionally and physically on employees, amazing opportunities to work with world-renowned artists, but disjointed leadership across departments lead to confusion, frustration and competition for programming space, time and funds.
This organization does not focus on the assets to its employees. Not recommended for young museum professionals looking to advance their career.

One of the best contemporary art museums in the country, the Walker Art Center has a large and dedicated staff with lots of teamwork across departments, and specificity in each role. The management is encouraging but transparent, and made me and my work feel valued. Even though it's an administrative role, being able to engage daily with astounding art simply by taking a stroll through the galleries or Sculpture Garden on a break was a huge benefit.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good benefits and pay. Great 401k after a year. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The organizations culture. No support and management in many departments is unaffective.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very clique driven. No training.

The Walker is a place where you'll have a lot of free time to think.  It's low stress but high stakes. Very, very limited career advancement. If you enjoy contemporary art, this is the place to be.

As an on call event staff member, this is a good place to be. Tasks are clear, training is very straightforward and if you have questions they are answered. Wonderful place to meet and network with other technicians. 

The atmosphere is set at this institution by the director, which can lead to overt exploitation of employees lasting past onboarding to long-term confidentiality of goals.  The commitment is excruciating and can be harmful, with leads to defamation of character.

The Walker is a great place to volunteer because the schedule is extremely flexible, most of the volunteer opportunities are fun or at least allow others to have fun, and there are numerous perks including free parking, free gallery admission, and more.

This was a fun job and I learned a lot about art and products out there. As an artist myself, I gained a lot of inspiration and motivation to create my own pieces.
