Wellstar Health System

I have been working in this location on a Med-Surg unit, as a travel nurse and the work-life balance is extremely hectic. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6, and on top of that, there’s primary care responsibility. The pace is overwhelming, with back-to-back discharges and admissions, leaving everything feeling uncontrolled. It feels like they expect nurses to be robots rather than humans.

In the mornings, during bedside reports, all patients are calling for pain management, and the medication pass begins—most of the medications are drips. One of the most frustrating parts is having to push beds downstairs to the dialysis unit. Meanwhile, Cardiac Tele is calling about patients in A-fib or tachycardic conditions that need immediate attention. On top of that, there’s insulin administration to handle.
At 7:30 a.m., nurses are required to attend IIDR (Interdisciplinary Rounds), where we go room to room giving patient updates with the team. The techs are already burned out, each assigned to more than 10 patients, and they’re often unable to provide much support. Even the charge nurses have the same number of patients as the rest of us, so they can’t act as backups.

Requests to the pharmacy for unavailable medications often go unanswered or are sent late. Most patients are immobile and fully dependent, making mobility tasks and Q2 turning solely the nurse’s responsibility, in addition to wound care.

Passing morning medications on time, especially antibiotics, is nearly impossible. There are only two working computers with scanners, so nurses are literally running to claim them, while others rely on company phones to scan dozens of medications. The scanning process is monitored rigorously, and you are required to meet a facility goal of 98%. If not met, you receive weekly warning emails. Some medications, like insulin, don’t even have barcodes.

On top of all that, supervision of patient care is highly detailed. Safety issues are often reported months later—sometimes two to three months after the patient has been discharged—highlighting things like missed Q2 turns during your shift or not given antibiotics on time.

This is not a safe working environment for nurses, especially considering the demands and the risk to our hard-earned licenses.
They canceled my contract abruptly I am already at work because my schedule be use of not meet their scanning goal and the patient has not been able to turn in my shift🥲


WellStar is a terrible place to work! They treat their employees inhumanely, violate their own policies, violate the law and care only about saving themselves money at all costs. I began working at WellStar in 2013 and resigned 7 ½ months later in 2014.
1.One thing that WellStar doesn’t tell you during the interview is that you will not be able to use PTO until after 6 months of employment. So that means no sick leave, vacation leave, personal leave etc. To make matters worse at my 6 month mark Wellstar went against its’ policy and forbid employees from using PTO for an additional 2 months (February 19-April 19). Their excuse for not allowing employees to use PTO was due to the April 7th implementation of a new Electronic Medical record system. The training for this system only lasted a couple of days by the way. 
2.In January and February of this year Georgia’s governor declared Georgia in a state of Emergency due to inclement weather. The roads were dangerously icy and most businesses and government offices were closed. It was impossible to get to work due to Georgia’s lack of snow/ice equipment to adequately treat the interstates let alone the local roadways. By that point I had been an employee for 5 months. WellStar refused to pay me, and all other exempt employees who couldn’t make it to work and had been with the company less than 6 months, for those inclement weather days.
3.In March I submitted my 2 week resignation. Unfortunately during my resignation period I became very ill. I provided a medical work excuse from my Dr. to Wellstar. Wellstar’s response was immediately terminating my health and dental insurance the day I called to tell them that  I would be out sick for the next 5 days, informing me that not only would I not be paid for the days I was sick but also wouldn’t be paid my accrued PTO upon resignation. There are no state or federal laws mandating employers to pay employees PTO upon resignation but companies do have a legal obligation to abide by their policies.
4.As a Wellstar employee you are only offered one health insurance choice: Wellstar/Piedmont health insurance. Through this health insurance you are mandated to only see Wellstar Drs. This means all of your co-workers/fellow employees have access to view your medical information.

Run from this awful place!!

I was offered a job at Wellstar and completed all orientation tasks as required. I had two days of orientation (you have more if your role is clinical) which I also completed. On both of these days I was supposed to be paid for 8 hours of work, so I should've been paid for 16 hours total. My manager had yet to contact me, and I also didn't know their name. I had to email 5 people -- yes, 5 different individuals -- and still was unable to receive any information. 4 of the 5, who were all involved in my onboarding process, did not even reply. I waited a few weeks as I figured my manager would contact me with my start date. I'd done everything I possibly could short of showing up and asking about my start date. 

Things came to a head when I was not paid for orientation. Now mind you, I was never contacted about the offer after my acceptance so it was still on the table. I was cleared to attend orientation, so I know I did everything I needed to do. Payday rolled around and I didn't receive compensation. I contacted payroll and was told to contact my manager as they hadn't put me into the system. I explained that I was unable to do so as well as the fact that I didn't even know their name. There was nothing else payroll could do.

At this point, I decided to resign. Wellstar does not uphold its mission or values and I would not recommend them to anyone, whether as a place to work or a place to seek treatment. My HR rep -- who up until my resignation had ignored me -- decided then that she'd like to talk about things. I politely declined. Please note that I also explained the manger situation and the pay situation to her prior to this. So second payday rolls around and guess what! Still no paycheck! I contact her again and say I will be contacting the DOL if I am not paid by the next payday. She says she'll look into it and get back to me. It's been a week so obviously that's a lie. At this point I'll be contacting the DOL as I have no energy for Wellstar.

I would not be mad if someone had contacted me to inform me of the delays or to rescind my offer. Ghosting in this day and age is unprofessional and unacceptable. If you enjoy being treated without respect, lied to and misinformed, Wellstar is the place for you! 

I really enjoyed my coworkers and patients. for the most part my workflow has improved to be more manageable and my managers hear me out however follow up on key issues is very poor and compensation is dismal. My inquiries regarding quality improvement projects are ignored and whenever I ask about compensation or an updated market analysis I am ignored. You are expected to go above and beyond but not always given the tools to do so and the reward for doing so is more work - not more pay. I do not receive reimbursement in a timely fashion (or at all) when I spend money for the company. I have paid for tools to use in demonstrations out of pocket with the understanding I would be reimbursed - but it does not happen and my managers conveniently do not see my communications that inconvenience them. My workload requires an additional staff member ( and has been like this for years) so I am doing the work of two people. this year we approved the budget for a second dietitian however because an updated market analysis has not been done - hiring into the position has been difficult as every qualified applicant turns the position down due to poor pay. There have been VERY sketchy hiring practices as well. I was hired from within and was told I would not be eligible for a pay increase when transitioning to the position - we worked it out and I got a pay increase and was told the job code was changed to do so. Now that we are trying to hire a second dietitian I am told the job code was never changed and qualified persons from the within would have to accept this as a lateral transition meaning they would not get a pay increase despite the fact that 1 year ago I was told the opposite. I have seen new grads get higher offer letters than experienced personal from within. Overall a fair place to work but unfair workload, poor work life balance and dismal compensation. 

Since I was hired at South Cobb OBGYN (Wellstar) in 2004, I have been given many challenging positions. I grew within South Cobb from Check-in/Registration to the Billing Supervisor. I have learned to use multiple computer programs, and have had the ability to share my knowledge with fellow coworkers whether teaching them how to use certain functions, or troubleshooting issue with the system. Along with this responsiblity I manage the billing staff, and represent the other OB practices within Wellstar when dealing with the Central Billing office. I work many reports on a daily bases that monitor our Aging Reports, Unbilled claims, Claims Edits, Paper media, and Unapplied, along with Credit report for refunds.

Even though their is not much diversity among my immediate coworkers there is diversity among the staff at South Cobb OB as a whole. I enjoy working with them, and the challenges I have faced in managing the billing staff. I have grown as a leader and the results showing in the cohesiveness of the billing department and the increase in productivity from not just managing billing for South Cobb, but also another practice within Wellstar that was falling to meet is monthly financial goals.

The hardest part of my position seems to be finding the balance between caring for my staff, and motiviating them to produce the results upper management requires, even when you don't fully understand or agree with these requirements. In the same hand though it has become one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. I take pride in seeing how my staff has grown and developed by the challenges I have posed to them. I have pushed many outside their comfort zone in areas I saw they could have great potential, even if they didn't feel so themselves. I am proud to say that all but one of the staff members rose to the occassion. I couldn't be happier for their work produced and all that we have learned together getting there. I believe the proof is in all our billing dept has accomplished as a team, and will continue to accomplish even in the future.

I accepted this position excited about the opportunity because I genuinely enjoy healthcare documentation and have many years of experience in the field. Unfortunately, my experience did not match my expectations.

My biggest concern was not the work itself, but the overall organizational structure and management. Job responsibilities were often unclear and seemed to expand over time, with our department becoming a catch-all for problems that should have been addressed elsewhere. Expectations frequently changed, making it difficult to establish consistency or confidence in the role.

Training and onboarding could also be improved significantly. Much of the learning process felt informal and dependent upon individual coworkers rather than a structured program. New employees would benefit from clearer processes, standardized training, and more consistent communication from leadership.

Staffing challenges made it difficult to maintain continuity and added to an already demanding workload.

I also felt there was a lack of meaningful management support when concerns were raised. Problems often seemed to be managed reactively (if at all) instead of proactively, leaving employees to navigate difficult situations with limited guidance.

That said, I worked with several knowledgeable and hardworking individuals who genuinely cared about patient care and the quality of the documentation. My criticism is directed more toward the organizational culture and management processes than toward the many dedicated employees who work hard every day.

Every workplace has challenges, and this review reflects only my personal experience. For someone considering employment here, I would encourage asking detailed questions during the interview about training, role expectations, workload, and management support so you have a clear understanding of what the position will involve.

I worked at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA for a little over 5 years. I was hired to educate new techniciand in the cardiac cath lab to performe coronary interventions such as angioplasty and coronary stenting among others.I served numerous roles, as a lead tech, clinical educator, and floor coordinator. During my 5+ years at this horrible facility i saw things like you can't imagine. There are electrical cords all over the floor in the procedure rooms were many people have trippeed got injured, yet they never repair the problem. I was one of thgose who fell, injuring my right elbow keeping me out of work for a week. They use the call team, "which is only for emergencies" to do schedule cases while true emergencies have to wait. I witness a death of a patient in the ER as he waited for the call team to finish an schedule case. You will have no breaks and lunch, if you are lucky, you may get 20 minutes at best. No managment either, so everyone thinks that they are in charged. In other words, to many cheif and no enough indians. Racial remarks and comment are an everyday occation and small clicks among sertain staff members makes for a misarable work enviroment. I resigned after 5+ years of solid service, I could not tolerated it any more but what really did it for me was getting squirted with a 60cc syringe full of blood by a phisician during a Pericardium sentisis at point blanck range. I had blood in my eyes, nose, aprom, ears and a nurse which was helping in the case got blood all over her as well. The phisician was laughing as if it was a joke and then he realized what he had done and started to panic. Oh, by the way, the person doing the sqirting was the cath lab medical director. I reported this and absolutely nothing was done. If you want to be abuse both phisicaly and verbaly, get a job here. If you want a good cath lab job, dont even go close to Kennestone Hospital.

A typical day working as a hospital operator can be fun, challenging, hectic, yet rewarding. Any information from IV and respritory line-ups to what's on the menu in the cafeteria is obtained and updated within my department. As well as providing updated info for the nurses we also provide patient location and discharge information to our guests. Transfering calls and providing current information is only half of it. When a patient is coding or when there is a fire alarm in the hospital we are the first ones to page overhead of the PLAN or CODE in effect. Main thing I have learned other than how to  providing excellent customer service, is simply what every department in the hospital does. My supervisor does not micro manage. They make certain that we have the tools and equipment to do our job effectively and help every employee provide the same level excellence. Overall my coworkers are a fun and supportive group to work with. We all share the same goal to simply do our part in providing world class healthcare. The hardest part of the job is just being on top of all the updates and line-up changes through out the day. Luckily this stuff becomes second nature and it needs to be. In a job where seconds count, providing wrong or inaccurate information to nurses or physicians can literally mean life or death. As for what I find most enjoyable; the little things that make a visit or stay at our hospital more enjoyable for our guests. And its always the most simplest requests like the direct number to call into a patients room or what channel is the Braves game on. Its very rewarding to be a part of the process in providing world class healthcare to every guest every time.   

What is the best part of working at the company?
Wellstars advancement opportunities are based on who you know and how well you are able to beg. If you do not fall in line with that, you will be blackballed especially in the Pulmonary Department. There are some wonderful doctors there that deserve a better staff and they are being deprived because the hiring/firing is contingent on making those with the authority to hire and fire, feel superior. There is no one you can speak to and no help available for those who genuinely seek to do better, be better and be appreciated for what they bring to the table. Skill and heart are not requirements, just be good at making your superiors happy and you will thrive. Wellstar: less than healthcare & lack of people care.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Finding and developing a team that actually cares about the practice and patient care. Everyone is so busy competing and backstabbing, that the quality of care is diminished and the time it takes to invest in a quality team is not of importance. Im so disappointed because Wellstar has a good reputation but there are people in the pulmonary department that have failed the system and its patients. For example, the East Cobb and Roswell locations specifically. The patients and the doctors deserve better.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
A lot of professional bullying, a lot of favortism no compassion or camaraderie. No desire to see others succeed and grow. Everyone is only self focused. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A struggle to get cooperation, organization and to get everyone on the same page as far as making life and healthcare easier for the patients.
