Wentworth-Douglass Hospital

It takes 4 weeks to get hired. I just got hired at a local place, haven’t given my notice here yet. Strongly consider other options please! Pay range for Revenue is 17 to 22 an hour. We get 200 hours vacation to start. Pay is weekly. The equipment is ancient. The management has had a high turn over rate. New management about every year. The coders were just outsourced to India. They don’t do efax or fax com to save paper. You get a half hour and a 15 minute break. We are part of the hospital in the revenue department at Broadway. It’s a 7 minute walk from the car to the parking lot. Partners has announced administrative staff should work from home until June 2021. If you’re going to be part of the Med Rec, Registation, Referral or Revenue team at Broadway? Know that isn’t an option for you even though we don’t face patients. We’ve been told if we do grab a mask to use it for a couple weeks before getting a new one. We aren’t spaced out 6 feet a part. People aren’t being told to wear masks at their desks because “Cubicle walls” even though our own hospitals research has suggested C19 is airborne. They aren’t doing pulse ox or fever checks. People that had a fever and waited a week for a test result? Had to use their vacation time. They couldn’t work from home even though we’d been doing it for months.  There are people in here coughing and sneezing and refuse to leave and get tested because they don’t want to use their PTO to wait for results.  And partners (Parent hospital) has said if you need to work from home you should to avoid exposing co-workers. The Directors stance? Be thankful you even have a job. Heard my coworker mention to director that people aren’t washing their hands when they leave the bathroom. The managers excuse was that people are afraid of germs?! They don’t know what basic billing laws or a provider manual does. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The patients and their families are the reason every single day. LNA’s are permitted extensive duties including training to “scrub-in” for OB/GYN surgeries and perform the duties of a surgical tech in this specialty. (no extra compensation for this responsibility/pressure including urgent/STAT situations, however)
Management that I encountered on 3 different units seem to be cruel and dismissive toward employees below an RN when it came to unfounded write ups without first consulting all parties below RN that we’re “involved”. 
Very disappointing for such an excellent facility. Yet I still recommend people in need choose WDH. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management protocol seems to focus on “chances to improve” and neglect ANY accolades or support (at least as an LNA) during reviews, etc. 
Should a superior claim there is an issue/situation, etc. you will not be invited to share what has been brought to attention and ask for your experience in the matter at hand. You will be handed a write up to sign and put in your file. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I love being an LNA, OBTech, HUC, etc. and that gets me through. Patients and families are grateful and kind. Some coworkers are appreciative and hardworking, supportive. Others will target you for “going above and beyond” which I believe is quite impossible in medical. There is always something more to do.

I worked as a safety monitor for 6 months which was still a new program. I am a lifelong resident of Dover and very familiar with WDH as a patient and thought it would be a good stepping stone. I liked that I could work later in the evening and be on call, but after a while I started to feel like I was always under review or at risk to be fired even though I know I did my job the right way and followed the rules, there was intimidation used by management and it just took my by surprise, b/c my co-workers would agree that I was a good employee, it seemed like just an excuse to bully an employee for whatever reason. There are many good employees and nurses, but I had no support from many of the nurses (which this job was supposed to do, which was be a helping hand to nurses) and I felt that I was invading their space. Very cliquey, if you're not a doctor or have a badge you are given no respect. I eventually resigned. It would be much better for this program if they put in new management that actually knew how to interact with their employees in a respectful way and treat them like human beings. Since it's a new program this current management is able to get away with their behavior, despite seeking help from human resources.

People like to point fingers, especially when they are doing something wrong, and see someone else do the same thing, they will point the finger at you to get you in trouble, so the heat is off them. They don't treat anyone fair. example. day shift gets away with little to no charting at all, but night shift, like me, constantly gets a lecture about charting even when we are the ones who chart the most. every time you enter a patient's room or see them, we chart. Somehow, the day shift doesn't and doesn't get a lecture when we night shift workers go and rely on the day shift's charting on what happened during the day. especially when we get report and its either half *** or a horrible report to begin with. makes more work for others. I'm sick of the blame game and pointing fingers, and the disorder. The day shift will leave the rooms a complete mess, and we night shift, will have to pick up after them or get blamed for it. their is no consistency with anything. The  sick policy stinks to. Unfortunately, unless you've been there for a yr, you can't get the FLMA, so if you're sick more than 5 times, they fire you. They need an overhaul on everything.

Working as a HUC has been a great experience. I have the hardest working co-workers in the world! Nurses rock! Just had to give a little shout out. Anyway, my day consists of making sure patients are getting what they need when they call the Nurse Navacare system. Patient care is our number one priority that is why it is so important to work together as a team with our nursing, physician, case management and social worker staff. Organization is of utmost importance as the day usually starts by assigning nurses and LNA's to their patients in our computer system. We ensure patients have their blood sugars checked for meals by notifying staff. Send patients to proper testing, working with physicians, nurses, case management and social work when admitting and discharging patients to home, rehabs or other hospitals. Place orders for physicians that do not yet use the computer order entry. Ensure stat orders are done immediately. In between all this we are answering phones, faxing and constantly communicating with staff whenever we get new orders or updates on patients. This job is very rewarding!

WDH is beautiful from the patient's all private rooms, to the waterfall entrance, etc. However if WDH spent more money on staffing the units appropriately then patients  would get better care and have we would have less readmissions, But  instead management focuses on better window views, or installing sounds machines.  The patients need the staffs support more than they need an eye mask or ear plugs to sleep. Nurses are always understaffed and the units are always full. Despite being understaffed for months, management is slow to hire  new staff. Can't use your earned time because their isn't enough staff to cover holes in the schedule. Despite being magnet status, the nurses get paid a lot less than other local hospital RNs.  The hospital overall seems to be overworked and understaffed, employees from all departments have an attitude for reason's such as being expected to do there job. My coworkers are awesome and the strong teamwork on my unit is the only reason I haven't left.

After working for WDH for several years, I have to say that on the outside they may appear to have it all, but don’t be fooled. If you are extremely thick skinned, keep to yourself and don’t speak to ANYONE-keep your friends close enemies closer mentality , you might make it. Entry level staff are ruthless, will do what ever they can to get a head - cut throat. Management is exceptional, however it’s typical corporation; chain of command with due process for everything. Training is great, if you can make it thru the ruthless woman, there is endless potential for growth! I’m Grateful for my opportunity and experience at WDH, I learned a lot- however my mental health suffered significantly. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, just remember that. 

Worked as a security officer.  Was excited at first to get the job however after my first day began I started applying to other jobs and regretted accepting the job.  Very rude work culture and rude direct supervisors.  Security staff is so bored they overreact to everything.  Unclear rules of how to perform the job with changes happening almost constantly.   Most of the rest of the hospital staff also hates security except for emergency room staff.  If you enjoy walking around a hospital checking for unlocked doorknobs, unlocking doors for staff that forget their keys, searching for lightbulbs that have gone out, and writing tickets to staff that park in the wrong spots with their car and the tickets don't actually do anything you may enjoy this job.  I hope this review helps someone.

So much has changed in the past few years and it’s not just because of covid. More work, more patients, more expectations that aren’t related to actual patient care. It’s about meeting quotas and how they can make more money. wdh used to be such a nice place to work, but moral is low and staff are burnt out and managers are more concerned with themselves and answering to their superiors than they are to staff who work late, come in extra, don’t take lunches. So many amazing nurses and other long term staff have left because of the high stress and not feeling seen or appreciated. The only people it’s really hurting is the patients. The only positive I can think of the great teamwork between the staff that is left between staff nurses, techs, providers and on unit pharmacy. These are the people holding it all together for the sake of the community. 

I started my career with Wentworth 8 years ago. I left for about 8 months and came back recently this past January, since then I was targeted because I was a per diem l, could not work the actual hours they promised. Also I have been pretty sick, with chronic issues and a family. They prefer you to come to work with an IV in then stay home. If you have a family and or health issues do not work here they don't care about you or your family, of course unless you are friends with people in higher up positions. They only care about the bottom line and the money they make, not patients or their employees. The managers and management staff are very unfair and the favoritism is disgusting.
