West Coast was a quickly growing company, when I worked there. It was obvious that they took alot of pride in the education they provided to their students. The employee training program was intensive, but they were extremely supportive. Having worked in college admissions before, I learned the field can be extremely stressful and numbers driven. WCU is not alone in that regard. They did a good job of listening and supporting us through those stressful times. I have alot of respect for Executive Director Duemand Edwards. He was an "in the trenches" type of leader. Our administrative teams listened to our concerns and implemented the changes we suggested. I felt heard and respected, in my position, even though I was not part of the leadership team.
The benefits are comparable to other companies I worked for. Medical, dental, vision, 401k were all included.
My only concern came from a lack of work/life balance. I was asked to work 1 weekend/month when I started. That's pretty typical for the field. That quickly turned into 2 and 3 weekends a month, with no end in sight. It felt like there was never a time I wasn't working. Every 10 weeks a new incoming class would begin and those 3 weekends turned into Fridays and Saturdays working until 10/11 pm at night. We also had to put in two late nights per week. Those nights we would leave around 8:30 or 9 am and had to be back at 8 or 9 the next morning. For some, the overtime might be a good thing. For me, I needed that time to recharge with family and friends. Time to do normal household chores. I didn't mind sticking around and helping once in a while, but this happened more often then I was comfortable with. 

The lower-level employees will go out of their way to may sure the students are successful. Everyone really cares about the students.


Upper and executive leadership do not support the mission or the workers. The bottom line is numbers. There are people in positions of power that know nothing about the educational experience and aren't willing to learn. There is constant change based on opinions vs. sound business decisions.
When they say jump, you better jump, or they will bully and embarrass you in front of your peers. There is inconsistency amongst departments and limited opportunities for growth. The person who is the loudest and most aggressive bully gets the attention. Instead of being forward-thinking, they put processes and programs in play that are antiquated.
Overall, it's an unhealthy culture but could be great again if leadership positions were filled with people who actually knew how to lead without bullying,narcissism, and discrimination. 

Organize the company, stop spending unnecessary dollars on unused technologies and training that go nowhere. Hire the best person for the job and not just a body to fill a seat. Stop hiring consultants to tell you where to go- tap into your associates who are on the front lines, model the culture after newer more successful companies who support their associates and their students. This is an educational institution with no educators in upper management positions. 

The level of toxicity trickles down from the highest levels of corporate all the way down into the student facing roles. Specifically in recruiting roles, admissions advisors are gaslighted and micromanaged. They must share their calendars and interview invitations which are recorded and either reviewed by a quality assurance team or watched live. Management makes admissions advisors believe low enrollment is their personal failure as opposed to their lack of marketing efforts. Common terms used are "admissions is a revolving door" and "associate directors of admissions are glorified admissions advisors." The same way, students are treated exactly like "just a number." Scholarship opportunities are mostly available only after they are not able to secure private loans either individually or with a cosigner. All in all, good people are gaslighted into resigning or the company "quiet fires" them. Your contributions are the property of your manager for which he/she takes credit. The false sense of moving up in your professional career is not worth risking your mental health or personal values.

My work day began at 8am.I worked in the Internal Medicine/Pulmonary Departments taking vital signs, reviewing medication lists, performing spirometry tests, administering breathing treatments, giving injections, providing wound care, initiating IV hydration therapy, and setting up for thoracentesis. Other back office duties included responding to patients' telephone messages, referral requests to different specialties, and calling in prescriptions to the different pharmacies. 

This particular department consisted of two teams. Each team included a physician, LVN, medical assistant, and a receptionist. Teamwork was very important, we communicated well to provide a comfortable environment for our patients and a smooth work flow. 

Since this was my first LVN job, everything was pretty new to me and I had to be supervised by an RN during certain procedures a number of times before being aloud to work at this task by myself. the hard part here was being able to locate an RN to assist in a time efficient manner. Of course, the RNs were willing to help. It was a matter of them being available.

Currently, I work from home and provide online lectures, which I really enjoy.  However, I am equally excited to perform my job at the university in the live classroom setting.  The technology available is excellent.  We have been transitioning to full electronic utilization.  That has been a somewhat difficult learning curve, but well worth it and I am given all of the support I could ask for or need.  Management is always available and there for guidance.  The pay is very good and I honestly don't have anything negative to say about it.  Just like any other job you will encounter little frustrations, but they are far outweighed by all of the positives.  I cannot say enough good things about the company/university.  I am doing what I wanted to do in nursing and I love it here.

I want to share my disappointing experience with WCU, which ultimately led to my decision to leave. The leadership team lacked competence and provided minimal support and guidance to employees. Despite claiming to be a deliberately developmental organization, it was clear that this was just a tagline, not a genuine commitment. Similarly, the company's reputation as a best place to work felt hollow, and fell short. Communication from management was lacking, contributing to a toxic work environment with unreasonable workload expectations and pervasive sense of inequity between colleagues. Additionally, leaderships unresponsiveness to turnover further eroded morale and trust. The political environment was concerning, casting doubt on the company's values. I urge potential employee's to carefully consider their options before joining WCU.

Low pay for nursing instructors. High class sizes topping 25+. Instructors "encouraged" to pass students that don't deserve it. Plagiarism runs rampant because courses almost never change over time. Adjuncts have very little say so in how courses are delivered but are expected to follow strict rules for grading and frequency of online engagement. Even one 3 hour course feels very cumbersome and time consuming. You can make way more money ( at least 2-3x per credit hour) at other online universities without being forced to manage 25-30 students per course, many who just don't care to put in effort...Grading 300-400+ papers/drafts in 8 weeks is for the birds.

The school was a good a place to work, but certain departments need massive inside out improvement. Many of the workers have no idea how to help( or even want to) help students. We were encouraged to make students come less to the office with tactics such as " shut down days" and long processing day turn arounds for students paperwork. There was favoritism from the boss and lack of professionalism. There was micro managing down to every word we said to students, and there was lots of yelling and rudeness. Many of the upper management have been here so long they know how to hide what they are doing from the directors and upper management. I am glad I left when I did. The professors on the other hand are brilliant.

This position is definitely not what it seemed once I started working. I was underpaid and overworked. We were often understaffed, so that put more work on me and my coworkers daily. Additional work would often get added to our plates with no additional compensation. A justifiable raise was hard to come by. There was no work-life balance; I never wanted to take off days unless necessary because I knew my coworkers would get my workload for however long I was out. Management is not filled with leaders, but with bosses and people who lack real leadership skills. The only good thing is the flexibility. I never had a problem taking off days if need be, and that's what kept me with this company for as long as I was. I would absolutely not recommend working here. I would dread coming to work every day, and that's the worst feeling to have. 

Don't work for For-Profit colleges just don't. It's not worth it. They don't recognize talent within the company they often promote outside. Pay or raises are way below the average even for standard inflation adjustment within the US. Favoritism is rampant with the institutions. Management uses other titles to make their workers feel like more than just employees but their actions don't show it. Management adds more and more work on you then expect you to complete it within 8 hours every day and don't offer overtime. Half the time students are in front of you crying or screaming about what the school is doing is wrong or how they are going to sue the school. It's just not worth it and enrollment across all for-profit college are going down hard! Start looking elsewhere or better yet dont even start in the industry.
