Thank you for listening. This is a short story about horizontal violence in the work place. Specifically the medical field. Most people know this by a different name. Eating their young, lateral violence, or bullying. I entered the medical field in 1986. I was stationed at a level 1 trauma center with a life flight helicopter. I was trained as an operating room technician. The schedule rotation was, days plus call, seven evenings plus call, and seven nights. Three to eleven was the witching hour. It was the time for the greatest social activity which included, drunk drivers, people shooting each other and every thing in-between. Some times the ones you were trying to save didn't make it. When the medical facility is a place designed to treat the badly wounded the number of casualties increases. I remember sitting with the surgical team after there was a death consoling each other. There was never any blaming or finger pointing as to why we lost the patient. The truth is, the human body can only take so much abuse and the thread of life that runs through us all is very fragile.
After my time in the Army, I worked at a medical center for ten years. I took seven years off to raise our daughter. When I returned to the work force, I was hired at a surgery center in southwestern Idaho. It seemed as though I was in the wrong place. This was not what I remembered. People were quick to blame for every little thing. A lot of the nurses were just mean for no reason and acted like they were all members of club med and I was just the janitor. There was no team work except among those that were already there and considered worthy of their clique. No time was allowed for training and I was expected to perform with little knowledge and no tools. I was told I had to treat the doctors like gods and like royalty.

Then I met some of the so called royal doctors and I saw the royal subjects catering to them. I saw how the royal subjects looked down upon me because they were the chosen ones and I was the scullery maid. One day I had to scrub with one of these royal kings. With in minutes I was taken away in chains and thrown into the dungeon because I did not bow to the king. With in a month one individual made it their personal job in life to try and teach me a lesson . I talked about this to other coworkers trying to gain support but I was treated as a child and was told it was just me and my problem. The bully in this case was an LPN who helped in preop and had spent most of her life in sterile processing and cleaning endoscopes. Several months passed and the harassment continued, so I told my supervisor. The harassment stopped for a little while and started again. This was a cycle that repeated every few weeks. Finally, after two years of being bullied I reported it to HR.
HR minimized it, down played it and said it wasn't harassment. But they were kind enough to act sympathetic and re-labeled it as unwelcome behavior. I went back to work and someone told the bully I had been to HR. The harassment stopped for a while and then started again. I applied for a job at another facility. I told the bully of my intensions and two weeks later I was harassed, threatened, and accused by the director of the surgery center for things I did not do. I put in my two weeks notice and walked away. For two and a half years I tried to find the good in people, I looked beyond the way they were treating me and gave them the benefit of the doubt. I built tolerance upon tolerance, I piled kindness upon kindness. I cooked for them and brought baked goods from my home. Then I saw every one of them turn into this thing I did not recognize . Then I saw them for what they truly were. They were all the same. They were all against me. They had gathered together to themselves the same types of people as themselves. It gave them great satisfaction in hurting those that were suppose to be their coworkers, all the while claiming we are healers of life. They looked after the needy to slaughter the innocent. After I was gone for a while I began hearing the gossip and rumors from people I saw at another facility. What was now being said about me was much worse than when I was at the surgery center. This just fortifies how serious the problem is. I am tired of hearing it's just human nature and you need to deal with it. Conquering entire races is also human nature. It is what we are born with and it is our choice how we use it. Oppression does not breed oppression, resentment breeds retaliation and retaliation breeds violence.
People don't want to talk about those ugly faces of reality because it reveals them for who they really are. Only when people understand the problem and deal with it for what it really is then things will begin to change.
Do not tolerate being treated like a third class citizen. They brought the fight -this I will defend.

What is the best part of working at the company?
For me, I loved working in the ER.  It was a clean and friendly workplace.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It wasn’t stressful until I was found down at the end of night shift and was ultimately fired before even getting results back from the MRO who was unsure why they fired me while at the same time denying me any explanation or allowing me to view the footage that should exist as I have a history of seizures and rather than even talking to me I was told I put the patient’s at risk without any concern for my health and I had no recollection of the incident.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Good people, great nurses and staff but the culture they portray does not reflect the way the Department was managed.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Setting up rooms, performing ekgs, printing and creating charts, transfers, stocking and entering information into the computer.

A typical day of volunteering consists of different tasks, depending on if you go in for the morning shift or the afternoon shift. I mostly work the afternoon shift, so I do about 2-3 lab runs, do Baby Cakes, and help the last people straggling in to their correct destinations. I have learned a lot in my time being a volunteer. My supervisor, or management is an amazing person, she makes the environment fun and safe for all of her junior volunteers and adult volunteers. We have all different types of people who work as volunteers, different in age or experience. The hardest part of being a volunteer would probably have to be remembering where all the places in the hospital are. The most enjoyable part of being a volunteer is Baby Cakes for me. I want to be a registered neo-natal nurse after high school, so being able to interact with the new mothers and their precious children is what is my most enjoyable part is.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Freedom of movement for officer, but make sure you are outside for shift changes.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with different ER Charge Nurses. Some welcome security patrolling the ER, and others want you to stay out of sight. Learning your place among staff takes time.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Training is ongoing and very good. Easy going job if you know how to work with people of all backgrounds.  Respecting and working closely with the House Supervisor is a must to keep them abreast of any major security issues.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Patrolling,  securing, reporting.

I have worked for many hospitals as a traveling nurse prior to landing at West Valley and this has been my favorite nursing job to date. The teamwork is excellent with very friendly and compassionate staff (including management). I can't speak for all of the units, but for a hospital floor nurse position I feel like this job is excellent. Staff nursing is inherently stressful, but having a great team and good staffing makes it to feel like I have the resources to give excellent care to my patients. The acuity is lower at this hospital due to the size and access to specialists, so it has a more rural laid back feel.

The culture is kind but not up to speed on best practice: staff are reluctant to offer the evidence-based care if it goes against “the way we’ve always done it”. There’s no Urology, Peds, OB, outpatient lab/infusion, Neurology, and the Trauma program is not equipped to offer emergent care. The computers rarely work and the EHR is abysmal. HR has targeted staff based on who is out of favor with administration in that moment. It’s an ok place to work if you’re comfortable being 10 years behind in mindset and technology. The benefits are good but the facility is outdated. 

make pt. rounds. Review any problems by priority to resolve. Give medications all routes. Computerized charting. Continue to update/develop POC. Pt. education. Do admissions & discharge with written instructions. Do IV therapy/IVBP meds. Start IVs./give rxs. Maintain/use CVL, portacaths, & PICC lines. Wound care.
Learned to really listen to what the patient is telling you. Very valuable.
Supervise other nursing staff & ancillary departments on unit.
Very fast paced job.
Patient satisfaction & good outcomes were rewarding.

Great place to be if you want to be part of the cool kids clique.  Management is more interested in concerning themselves on employees fitting in rather than their abilities. Little to no opportunity for advancement,  however, they will make you a "coordinator" for a certain specialty with no compensation. PTO is seldom approved due to staffing issues. The above mentioned cool kids are allowed to cherry pick their assignments. Meaning they get to stay away from certain specialties, i.e. ortho, spine, etc.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Ver clique. Overall my experience there was not great. Now I have to pay the sign on bonus because they weren’t prepare to accommodate the Starn program my colleague and I had to quit the program. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not being able to have the proper hands on training 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very clique. No support from the management. They promise one thing and hook you with sign on bonus but lack of training
