Working for Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) has been amazing.  The culture here is professional, with a relaxed supportive caring environment. 

My director has been nothing but supportive. She has taught me many management skills and has given me consistent encouragement.  She is a true leader with strong interpersonal skills. 

Our department is small for a 40 million dollar budgeted organization. 

The overall culture at WJCS is extremely professional and they do amazing work.  WJCS has over 80 programs serving the Westchester community from cradle to coffin and everything in-between.  

The programs are all evidence based practices and very professional.

Management has been very supportive and understanding of life's issues as well.  They encourage your ideas and expect your very best performance.

The hardest part of the job would be lack of staff in my particular department, Development Department. This is due to lack of funding abilities.  

The most enjoyable part of the job is the constant fulfillment of knowing you are part of a large, mark making non-profit organization.  WJCS is celebrating its' 75th anniversary and continues to be an innovative leader in the mental health area who I am proud to be a part of.  

WJCS has been a wonderful learning experience for me.

The company itself isn’t bad — they do try to foster a sense of community. But your experience will depend entirely on the department you’re in. If you’re considering a role in the billing department, I’d strongly advise against it. While my coworkers were professional and kind, the department is undermined by toxic leadership.

The head of billing has a serious attitude problem and clearly thrives on a power trip leading with intimidation instead of support, creating an environment where asking questions feels unsafe. There was a lot of favoritism — and it’s painfully obvious. I wasn’t treated the same as others, and it impacted both my confidence and my performance.

Despite being hired with the promise of a hybrid schedule, that never materialized. The turnover rate in that department is out of control — and for good reason. I wasn’t the first person to walk away because of this treatment, and I doubt I’ll be the last. Until leadership is held accountable, this cycle will continue, and good employees will keep leaving.

A typical day at my job can be very hectic. I work the morning shift and I assist the residents in performing their ADL's, I go on medical appointments, I perform Secretary work regarding the Residents. I fill out data books concerning the Residents, daily behavior. I have a great relationship with the management team at hand. We get along pretty well, and we have meetings to collaborate ideas on improving the overall job performance and the well being of the Residents. My co-workers are the best we come together as one body to produce great team work, which exhibits a delightful work environment for the Residents and the staff. Things just run  smooth. The hardest part about my job is experiencing death within the Residency and the staff. We are like a big family and to lose a member is extremely painful. The most enjoyable part of my job is serving the needs of the population in which we serve.

While many advance quickly in the ranks in clinical and administrative departments, in clinical support roles it is rare. There is little challenge or opportunity for greater responsibility or diversity of tasks.

Benefits are good and efforts are made to offset medical expenses with agency contributions. Unfortunately salaries are low, even for not-for-profit.

Colleagues and atmosphere is mostly warm and supportive. It is difficult to hear tributes from management and BOD to staff, but fall way short in ensuring that we have enough to live on in an expensive county. Every year we fall further behind. 

Managers pretend like they care but they are really watching out for themselves and are quick to "throw you under the bus."  Even when employees complain the bosses are protected.  Lots of favoritism.  We used to have 3-4 different insurances.  All were dropped and now we only have 1.  So much confusion and uncertainty with this new insurance.  Even the benefits administrator seems to be confused herself.  4 holidays were dropped from the holiday list (not including Columbus day and Veterans day which we never had as a holiday) because clinicians can't seen to keep up with productivity.  In return we received 1 personal day and its use it or lose it.  Seems like the company is starting to run as a for profit instead of non profit and not compensating employees appropriately.

From what I've heard, many other programs and companies are actually worse, but from my personal experience, this is a dead-end place to work for. The pay is mediocre. There's always a false sense of ease to working for WJCS, because incompetence lulls many to sleep until deadlines or audits show up and everyone begins yelling at or gossiping about everyone else. Very few take responsibility and even fewer are actually doing their jobs as intended. The end goal of working there is to follow arbitrary conflicting and aggravating guidelines, try not to get yelled at or thrown under the bus and collect your check at the end of the day.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the client and help them with their needs. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everything,  it's a joke working in this company.  Upper management likes to threatened employees jobs. It's a slow pace organization.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Its not diversity.  The organization will say it is. But it's not at all!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I will start my day data entry. Call clients to confirm their upcoming appointment.

There are a few benefits to working here, but it honestly depends on the program. From personal experience, I can tell you that some programs enable and appoint certain unqualified people to management or supervisor positions, while they make qualified employees watch. There is no room for growth or advancement in the positions, unless you become "besties" with supervisors and Directors. No stable management in specific programs.

My team at WJCS is close-knit and supportive.  This is a great agency to work at as a social worker or mental health professional looking to build their knowledge of various treatment modalities as WJCS offers a number of training courses through their educational institute.  These courses are typically free for employees and offer CEUs for those who need them.  While the pay is fairly low, the agency offers comprehensive benefits in addition to the educational opportunities, which makes it worth it!

The most stressful part about working at WJCS is trying to meet all of the various responsibilities for the clients while maintaining a high caseload.
