Working at this company is akin to navigating a relentless storm each day. The environment, surrounded by inmates, is tough in itself, but the management's incessant focus on discipline and constant mandates adds another layer of stress. It's clear that a substantial gap exists between the regional management's understanding and the ground realities, possibly due to their lack of adequate education in the pertinent fields.

The company, being profit-driven, seems to prioritize bottom lines over the wellbeing of its employees, creating a culture of fear and compliance rather than innovation and support. Each day, employees walk a tightrope of adhering to strict, often harsh, mandates while managing interactions with inmates, who too are subjected to this harsh environment.

What I've learned here is resilience and the art of patience. This job teaches you how to keep your head down and navigate through bureaucratic mazes, a skill that's honed by the necessity of survival in such a stringent setting.

The hardest part of the job is undoubtedly dealing with the constant scrutiny from management and the pressure of maintaining a semblance of order amidst an atmosphere of tension and unpredictability. The mental and emotional toll is palpable, with little to no support from the higher-ups to ease these daily challenges.

The silver lining, though sparse, comes from the camaraderie among colleagues who share the same struggles, and the occasional small victories when you're able to make a positive impact, no matter how minor, in successfully steering through a challenging situation. These moments provide a brief respite and a fleeting sense of accomplishment in a landscape where morale is often in short supply.

This company does offer a real-world lesson in endurance and the harsh realities of a profit-driven approach in a challenging environment. However, the cost at which these lessons come is high, both emotionally and mentally, making the daily grind a tough pill to swallow.

I really liked my job at the Baltimore City, Women's Detention Center, day shift.  I enjoyed working with Stacie, my Charge Nlurse who was very informative and fair.  I learned a great deal about Psychiatric patient's and different behaviors and saw how different medications are effective in changing behaviors.  The environment was very stressful and nursing materials not always available.  I discovered most patient's were Bipolar and not taking their medications regularly.  You had to learn quickly, not to be taken advantage of - by the inmates.  I worked in a Detox Unit, which I learned about addiction and withdrawal.  It appeared that Xanax withdrawal was severe and could appear days later, after Alcohol and Methadone withdrawal.  Learning to cope with the Correctional Officers and Inmates and the daily stress was a true challenge.  I valued my friendships with other Nurses, CO, Psychologist, Charge Nurse and needed their interaction and support to continue to work at the City Jail.  The noise and hearing "Nurse" constantly called as you walked down the hall, was a constant factor.  Most Nurses, will comment that "this is a PRN job not to be worked full time - due to the poor working conditions".  I had to use "critical thinking" to complete task, as  I had to create new ways to do wound dressings and patient care with available supplies.  I enjoyed seeing the "end result" of Nursing care and after withdrawal was completed and after medications where started with positive results.  I found most inmate situations revolved around illegal drugs and most inmates will  return to the "streets" and past behaviors.  I really tried to "make a difference" in finding the care that these inmates needed and showing that someone listened and cared about them.

Working in a prison can already be a stressful environment add working for a prison and Wexford together equals disaster and miserable employees. I worked for a previous agency like Wexford prior to Wexford taking over that company had its faults but nothing compared to Wexford. The company came in with great promises and ambitions of change but failed to deliver instead they demanded more from an already understaffed mental health department, they lack compassion and the management will boldly lie to your face. The management has a tendency to chase the employees who do care out for made up reasons or they become vindicitive where you feel you have no choice but to leave for your own sanity. Management has a tendency to not communicate with staff, they lack direction and expect more then one person can give. The turn over rate will be high due to this causing those who are left either working with inexperienced staff or doing more then their share of work, best decision I ever made was to walk away! When I did walk away even after turning in my two weeks notice, I received a letter stating I was terminated as the HSA apparently didn’t didn’t communicate with Human Resources I was leaving. Not one person in management asked why some one who was involved and had been there for many years decided to leave yet others who turned in their notices where offered more money or benifits to stay. I never understood how the HSA was able to take vacations once a month pretty much, when I had more time on the books then she did and that wasn’t enough for a weeks vacation considering you only earn 4 hours every pay. Don’t work for them if you can avoid it, save your sanity and dignity.

EEC events, free coffee bar, free parking, flex schedules (depending on department manager!)

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Toxic culture, constant gossiping and nosing around in your business (management will scour you on social media), unrealistic workload, abundance of litigations with high possibility of being subpoenaed if you work in the contracting dept (you will have to be deposed and the company does not warn you about this)

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stay away from credentialing, claims, and contracting. Leadership is inexperienced and unqualified. Corporate office is extremely toxic, cliques galore in senior management, HR is unprofessional and useless.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You can try to plan out your day as much as possible however Correctional medicine has many hiccups and you will face many challenges. You will come across a plethora of emails, serve as a point of contact for your state clients, you will field issues surrounding payroll and claims, you will work on contracts, audit files, and also work with your client sites with any issues they may have. If any contractual requirements are the result of litigation, you will be expected to fulfill those as well, that could range from reviewing invoices for services rendered to handling the scheduling of specialty services. You may also receive phone calls for inquiries pertaining to utilization management and authorizations.

Typical workdays are unbalanced, if you show effort and work hard, you will be pounded with everyone else's duties, including senior leadership. EVP has not worked in office since the pandemic and CEO hides behind closed doors, neither knowing the state of the company. Training is absent, wing it and be a self-starter or suffer. Very clique-y environment if you are in office. Correctional Medicine is very interesting but litigious, be warned. Most providers are easy to work with because the company throws money at them left and right for retention BUT most are also senior, have bad history in community medicine or are not board certified. Huge disconnect between company, client and DOC's creating frustration. Senior leadership support is lacking and HR makes up the rules as they go. The EEC is nice, tries to promote inclusivity with corporate events and does good charity work. The director of BD has more than one personality and is difficult to work with. The comptroller is a joke and holds checks making it difficult to keep independent contractors happy and working. Good the company and read the reviews and articles before accepting a role here. It will affect your career moving forward. Clients are in different time zones which makes work hours long. Not much technology, very antiquated way of doing things, lots of paper pushing instead of electronic platforms. Change in leadership caused 100% turnover of contracting department.

What stands out is several negatives!   Management unwilling or inexperienced in devising a decent work schedule,as it’s so sporadic that it leads to much stress and unfulfilling home and personal life!    Office politics are played to its fullest in my work locale, only certain “ people “ are lucky in acquiring their desired time off and work schedule and choice of work area.  Supervisors are unwilling to accommodate if a condition is in need of light duty, even though it is feasible. The company itself could make for a better personal life outside of work for its employees, by possibly offering 36 hours as full-time , considering the stressful nature of a nursing position at a prison, and especially for those working nights shift.   It is well known the hardship that night shift causes to one’s health, physically and mentally and in personal life.   Other companies have managed , and successfully so, with a 36 hour (12 hour shifts) work week .   If it was looked into, one might see that nurses who have this choice , are far better at their jobs, have a better morale, and are happier in their personal lives, and can sometimes have time to attend to their health.  Overall, offering better work hours, especially those who need to work night shift, would make for a better work life , enables better quality work with more proficient work with less errors, and less turn over rates!

The benefits are great, but that is about it. The management does not care about the employees PERIOD. If you have a question about why you are doing something or if you ask for clarification, management lets you know you are incompetent and not meeting company expectations. As opposed to siding with their own employees and doing an investigation into reports of harassment by other employees, both from Wexford and the State Correctional Facility contracted with, they will side with the contracting institution to save face; money is the bottom line. They cut corners on providing services and try to "get around" as many policy and procedures as possible while still making the contracting company feel as though their needs, and the needs of the inmates, are being met. Other employees are backstabbing and will lie about you to get ahead themselves. DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY IF YOU VALUE YOUR LICENSE AND HAVE ETHICS AND DIGNITY.  If management does not like you, on a personal level, it does not matter how great a job you do or how much you are commended by the contracting facility/warden/assistant warden etc, personal feelings trump professional conduct EVERY TIME. The Director of Mental Health will lie as much as he can whenever he can. He will praise you/say one thing to your face and then demean you to someone else. RUN RUN RUN!

Please if you can find another company run quickly to it! This company should have never been approve to work at the Prisons. They are very business minded. They care very little about staff or their complaints. They hire Administration (HSA, DON) based on friendship. Therefore, if you have a problem with one authority figure, you actually will have problems with them all. This company hire very immature Managers that come only to get a paycheck biweekly. Managers care nothing about the inmates or their staff. They hire managers that are afraid to walk on the prison compound to address issues with inmates because they are afraid. Therefore, they send their secretary to do their work. Working at a Starbucks probably treat and may express more respect and dignity for their staff than this company. Run fast from this company! They will interview you with the most pleasant personality until you come to work there then the niceness become NICE NASTY! This is when they are plotting to get rid of you but constantly laughing in your face like they appreciate everything you are doing for the company. Please watch out. I wish I would've taken these reviews serious but I was so desperate for a job and they were the first to call out of 130 apps I submitted. I should've known something was not right about this company. The state Florida should band this company for being in our state.

The staff is hardworking and care for their mission which is to give the best possible healthcare to correctional inmates.  Not everyone is a fit for this job, it takes strength, perseverance, care, and a lot of team work.  Former employees who are disgruntled usually are those who call off a lot which makes the rest of the nursing staff work that much harder.  The HSA, DON, ADON and Charge administration work hard at making this a professional place to work and rarely let the disgruntled affect their main mission.  If you really want to ask staff their opinion of the environment you should ask those who have been here for more than 20 years, ten years, and 5 years.  Those are the ones who see the lesser quality staff come and go while the strong ones stay to fulfill their own mission in life.  Pay and benefits are exactly that...Pay...and benefits.  You can find better pay and better benefits at a job where you are unappreciated or you can find quality pay and benefits here where you feel you have found your niche.  PTO goes with "Time Management"...we each need to learn how to balance our life/work environment.  The Corporate level administration is not big at micro managing the site administration which is a welcome fact.  We each have our jobs to do and if we do them right, we can sleep at night knowing we have helped someone today who does not get that care from the community on average.

I thought I could never say this but it is a horrible company to work for. If you are ok with your license being jeopardy daily don’t work here. 

I think there is a certain way people should be treated that work for a company (with respect and professionalism) don’t expect that from Wexford. At one point I was told By upper management that I should not expect something that people don’t have. I thought those 2 things were common place for a healthy working environment. 

You will be expected to do things that are beyond your scope of practice. When you push back and have valid reasons like your licensing ethics as to why you will not do certain things your work environment may become hostile. 

Management is horrible. Don’t expect your supervisor to step in and help (especially at this facility). When we became shorted and shorter staffed, more and more was expected with no assistance in sight. Caseloads became more unmanageable. Then when you could not get your work done due to staffing issues (some staff not all depending on who administration liked) began to get wrote up for no cause. Even if you could prove false things in write up with proof no one cared. 

Run away from this company. There are some good people there but for the most part Wexford does not care about there employees and will let that be known. If you value your license and your sanity do not apply.
