Whaley Foodservice

I worked at the Raleigh branch for a little over a year. Left on good terms I think,.. would have stayed if I could (COVID-19 economy). 

Typical day is centered around running calls to meet customer needs. Whaley has a mix of restaurant and institutional customers. When the Tech is not On-Call, the office folks set your basic schedule for the day - and direct priorities if needed. Many days I had significant flexibility with how I ordered the customer calls on my board... other days - not so much. Its not a cake walk by any stretch... you have to follow safety measures closely. But if you stay focused, stay positive, and are willing to ask for help when needed, the days go well. Some customers can be difficult and have unrealistic expectations.

I came to Whaley from an Electronics background. I was able to learn a bit about the gas equipment (which was new for me) and some of the higher voltage AC supply knowledge that I hadn't touched since I was in trade school. Management provided textbooks to study for the CFESA industry certifications. I was able to plow through a couple of the manuals - but did not get the chance to sit for the tests (big missed opportunity for me).

Management is good. Before the whole COVID mess hit - the folks in the office would have big breakfasts around major holidays for everyone to enjoy... that was really nice. Folks in the office are a little overwhelmed at times; there's a lot of moving pieces I think. Some of the long time techs told me the business has grown and changed a lot over the years... that's a challenge in itself.

One of the hardest parts for me was wrapping my head around the wide array of equipment (Electric, Gas & Steam)... it's a lot to learn. Whaley and their customers have high expectations. I felt like the training could have been a little more structured, but the guys that have been there a while are valuable beyond measure to a greenhorn; I honestly wouldn't know what to suggest to improve that training - given the broad skillset that has to be developed. It's not easy or quick to develop a tech. 

The communications processes are strained at times, that effects planning, which creates a reactive dynamic that takes a while for everyone to dig out of. That's frustrating for everyone.

The best part of working at Whaley was the people. I just thoroughly enjoyed the folks I worked with. And when I fixed a customers issue and and they where happy - that was gold too.

If I could give this company a zero I would. I haven’t been here long but I am already visualizing my last day and how happy I’d be not working at this company. The management is absolutely horrifying. They promote people who will throw you under the bus. You get outed in meetings if you do something wrong and everyone is just a bully. 
The trainers are a joke, constant changing of policies, and insurance is a joke. This job is hard enough and requires a lot of support. When you ask management for help “figure it out” is their response. Only when you do figure it out it’s something that will be held over your head to use for firing you. 

It's promoted like a localized service business that cares about it's technicians, but actually skews their pay with misleading time rules that add up to be very expensive, meaning you end up making nothing close to what they contractually agreed to pay you.  They pay bi-weekly, and taking their time rules into account you have to work 90 hours before you start making over time.  They pay a large portion of health insurance which is a good benefit if you aren't aware that your pay is being skewered more than enough to cover the cost and then some.  Other than that it's standard service work, long hours and being on call.

In this position I answered phones, transferred calls, did data entry and billing work, some collection calls, and handled cash payments from technicians. I had to work with my coworkers a large percentage of the time, so team work was necessary. I got along well with management. They were very laid back and trusting. I was shown what to do and was able to learn without someone breathing down my back. The hardest part of the job was there were many slow days where there wasn't much to do. The most enjoyable part was interacting with my coworkers and customers.

The most stressful part is the stress I put on myself with setting high standards and trying not to do anything wrong. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Everyone works as a single unit a team of technicians with one goal. Maki g the right call and getting home safe.

I'm happy every day and look forward to each day working with Whaleys.

Great company to work for. Very understanding when you have things that come up and you need time off as long as you don’t take advantage of them. Fast paced work environment, great internal support as well as a large network of help at your fingertips. On the job training as well as specialized training direct from manufacturers. Plenty of opportunity for career growth as well as your earning potential. 

All upper management will stab you in the back and use you as a scapegoat for all their mistakes. If you try to bring up matters of concern you will get pulled to the side and get a stern talking to. Basically threatening your job over questions they asked. I guess the meetings are recorded and they want to look good. Charlotte branch is a smoking mirror. Benefits are horrible even if you have kids. All in all stay away from this company. I know other techs at other branches and they say it’s the same. Branch managers are more concerned about their bonuses than any employee.

Unfortunately, ever since new management from CT came in the company went down hill fast. She is the biggest bully we have ever seen. Prides herself on putting fear in all employees.  Eventually destroyed the Whaley family name.

Company was bought out by biggest competitors. Many many layoffs happened to lots of good people.  

Technicians are treated very poorly.  Lots have left Whaley to work at other companies.

Stay away from this place.  It's horrible.

its getting worse every year compared to Years ago when it was a private owned company. Missing good old days. Employees in corporate have all kind of fun but as a technician, you are the mule that pulls this circus  you are by your own  training is in the field on customers appliances. You train your self. They promise you all kind of things but never happening. As long as you work hard and say “ yes sir to them they are good  if you ask for a favor  start to rain and tonser

Whaley's is a good place to work,  but make sure you ask for training. Salary is lower than what you would expect for the role, especially for administrative ones. However, Whaley's does care about their employees and they try to take care of them, especially during Covid-19. 

Whaley's is a subsidiary of PT Holdings group, so dealing with them feels like they don't know Whaley's very well since we were a.local company bought out by them.
