A typical day at work is just sitting by the desk and checking in visitors and patients, checking out visitors, and directing any visitors who need assistance. We also help escort people into the Emergency Room or occasionally wheel visitors to their respective destinations. I learned how to use the EPIC system for various reasons--whether it's looking up patient information, or requesting transport help, etc. Management has been great. My boss is actually very wonderful and understanding and always flexible with schedules. The workplace culture is nice for the most part. Most people are respectful. The hardest part of the job, however, would be miscommunication with different departments regarding patient exceptions for visitation. That's not even the hardest part; I would say dealing with a heavily distressed person/family is something that is difficult due to their various reactions. A lot of people don't come to the hospital for a good or happy reason so of course the stress is an expected thing.
Overall, it is very satisfactory to be able to help families and patients feel welcomed and comfortable. Despite my hands being tied, I do my best to help to the utmost of my abilities and power. Their gratitude for you giving them their time never ceases to make me feel good.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Stable financials. Montefiore brought tons of money to the organization but changed the HR environment totally. All business no compassion for employees. People are not happy working at WPH from what I hear. Retired and I keep in touch. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Hard work, stay late. Little consideration for personal needs . 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture is autocratic despite being a Magnet hospital. Many individual units are great places to work but many are not. Most managers have now resigned themselves to the corporate atmosphere. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Arrive early, work understaffed often, stay late , go home. Often have lunch quickly on the units. Work hard or you will not be working at this organization. The CEO has very high expectations. Behavioral standards are enforced.

Being part of a team/unit, it was as if we were all attached together by a string  Doctors, Nurses, Nurse Techs in sync with each other for the greater good of all whom walk threw our ER doors. Be it the insured or uninsured everyone received the same superior quality of care. I  learned to become a professional in every sense of the word. Although an occasionally fast paced atmosphere, I never felt more passionate or alive while working in the ER Department. Due to few mental lapses on my part, I lost my job. The  workplace culture and environment was like no other and that included working on ICU, CCU,3F ICU-Stepdown as well as MED-Surg Units. Management from t was a class act providing everything to succeed rescources, training, etc..The most enjoyable was the friendships and comaraderie which I sincerely miss dearly. And i'm constantly reminded of when i past by the hospital everyday.

This is my first hospital job, i entered 3 years ago because I wanted to make sure nursing is what I wanted to do in my life and I can’t even explain the many things I have learned, the friends I have made, the friendly environment in this place but most importantly the type of care we give every single one of our patients day in and day out. I will never want to take a friend or family member anywhere else because I know that the care this hospital gives is the best you will ever receive. You never know what you’re going to walk into for the day but with the great teamwork no matter the obstacle we make it through. Every role in the hospital has their own tasks every day but everyone goes above and beyond and helps in other roles as much as they can. No job is perfect and stress is inevitable but the people that work here make it worthwhile. 

I worked on the Oncology/Med-Surg department and loved it.  I dealt with all types of individuals in different stages of their sickness from certain cancerous stages to patients who were recovering from surgical care.  I assisted the nurses with the patient ADLs when asked.  I spent a good deal of my time replenishing the patients room supplies and the nurses station supplies.  I assisted in the patient transportation to their correct testing sites.  I ran lab specimens to their proper site when needed.   I interacted with the patients and the DRs. giving them as exact detail I could of their condition(s).

Management does not want to work with their staff to find the problems between management and the employees. Employees who have worked 10+ years are able to be passive aggressive and make working as a team difficult. There is no structure from management to the employee. Medical staff run the department, managers are just there for face value they don’t do anything to help build their employees. If you bring issues to HR you will have a harder time in your office due to poor communication from HR management to department management. You cant talk to anyone you have to allow them to bully you in order to keep your job. 
Your only opportunity to grow is if you are close to HR management

Pros
Good benefits. good selection of food in breakroom. The work doesn't really require a lot of experience. People are kind of nice.
Cons
At first, everything appears pretty great. But as time goes on, you see how the consultants (clinical or worklife) are immensely micromanaged. . Email "threats" to "auto-in" are not as immense as they used to be; however, most are expected to toggle answering calls, completing cases, and offering online support. Bonuses are a rarity, as we are more or less a gloried web search and offer most info over the phone. Promotions seem only available if you are the "type (superficial, sorority or frat boy)." The management staff are all super friendly but you are often threatened to be forced to work weekend or other undesired shifts if coverage is short. Sure it's a job, but everybody is trying to find a way out.

Do better

I have been working for almost 22 years at my position. I love helping and guiding Patients & Visitors. I have learned many things working here the most important is have a smile on,  to be patient with everyone treat guest how you would want to be treated ,Compassion , and most of all Listening.  I love helping guest or patients that have difficulty with the English language , guiding to the right location.
I have had three managers for the pass 22 years since my resent manager took over this roll , we have had an amazing Team, amazing transition, .
The hardest part of my job is to say no to visitors or Guest it is difficult to see a visitor with so much  anxiety and I try to help sometimes it works and sometimes not so much. but I keep trying .
All in All I love my job I love providing Visitors & Guess with the upmost respect, compassion , understanding.  

Working at White Plains Hospital for several years has been quite enriching. I have made friends that have turned into what feels like family. Being able to work and network with staff and visitors that i come across on a everyday basis is quite refreshing. The most enjoyable part of my position is that i get to interact with patients and family which makes me feel really good to be able to help people and make a difference. Rather it is something as simple as making sure a patient gets the right meal according to her/his diet or exchanging encouraging words to a family member of the patient. I go home feeling accomplished and it drives me to do even better.
