Phlebotomy has always been something I was interested in so I was very excited when I began to learn more about it. What I have learned so far is you can never know too much, there is always room to grow! At first I knew just the basics from school like order of draw, how to perform venipunctures, how to use a centrifuge, etc. When I began working I learned how important it was to follow all of those rules I learned in class and how order of draw can actually affect the tests being performed. I have worked in many places as both a medical assistant and phlebotomist, I enjoy both. I am a people person and I love having pateint interaction. A typical day at work for me is coming in to open and be ready for whatever I have to do next, whether it be draw a patient or go to the different doctor`s offices. The management there is awesome! I love both of my bosses and the rest of the staff that I work with as well. We are all part of a very important team. The hardest part of my job I would say is drawing blood from chlildren. They have very small veins and often dont sit still so we constantly have to remind them how important that is so we can do our jobs properly. The most enjoyable part of my job has always been the patients! I love seeing them every day, especially in outpatient. They often understand if we are running behind ( which is rare, but it does happen) and are very polite, even if it is early in the morning when we have to draw their blood.

Not a bad place to work, however, the department I worked for was 1. not very diverse, and 2. not very organized. I was terminated for making the mistakes my co-workers did, even in asking questions about the mistakes that I made in order to see where I was going wrong. In the end, I was left alone for a month while maintaining an entire department, only to be fired for it in the end, I rarely got sick, didn't ever get COVID, came early and stayed late, and covered when coverage was needed. In the end, I bent over backwards for this department only to be told that I wasn't good enough and fired. I always felt that I was the odd one out and that I never really fit in except with one or two of my colleagues, and upon termination, I pretty much was blamed for the faults of everyone despite the fact that numerous people did what I did. However, I gained a good amount of experience that I will take with me to my next employer and it was a joy to interact with the patients and hear their stories, and just interact with them.   

Working at Woman's Hospital has been a generally positive experience. I genuinely enjoy the work environment and appreciate the great people I get to work with daily. The camaraderie among colleagues is a strong point that makes coming to work enjoyable.

That said, there are areas where improvement is needed. The leadership, particularly the CEO, gives the impression that security is not a priority, which can be concerning given the importance of maintaining a safe environment for staff and patients alike. Additionally, there is a noticeable disparity in how rules and policies are enforced based on one's role.

Doctors appear to have significant leeway in their actions, and nurses, who are integral to the hospital's operations, seem to have a degree of influence that allows them to bypass certain standards. On the other hand, non-healthcare workers are held to much stricter expectations with little flexibility, which can feel inequitable.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The "assessment center" (ER) was ridiculous, ordering ultrasounds to rule out ectopics without a beta HCG result, and many times over when the HCG value was too low to be able to see with ultrasound, then repeating every 48 hours, what a waste of resources!  Also, my contract was for 9-5:30 Mon - Fri but another tech quit and they asked me to help by working 3:30 pm - 2:30 am, so I didn't d, but that ended up meaning I worked 2 or both weekend days. I never got shift differential or weekend or holiday pay.  That was very unfair to me.  I got used.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Good for the most part.  Seemed like they did their best to support staff and time and family needs

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Everyone took their turn with patients, for the most part, there were a few lazy ones.  Back and forth to the assessment center a lot.

Most of the leaders have not been prepared for the more competitive healthcare marketplace. The result has been poor financial manage and patient care which has resulted in financial stress. Financial problems  were laid at the burden of the employees for years. Pay for employees became uncompetitive. There has been some new leader ship however some have remained and continue to bring down the potential of the organization. Leadership has consistently lacked enough diversity to reflect the community they serve which has resulted in poor customer satisfaction and failure to listen to patients when they voice concerns. Consequently this has also lead to safety issues. The future is questionable for the organization. However, if they clean out all of the old management and start fresh, there is potential for the organization to once again become the  birthplace of Baton Rouge Baton Rouge.

Work days were typically very busy, I think my unit needed more staff to help with the increasing business. Management cares about their workers work life and family life. The culture can be cliquey from unit to unit, and within units. The hardest part of the job was too many patients for the amount of rooms, and nurses, we had, the acuity of patients at times, the amount of patients that were out of our specialty or ability to care for due to lack of life saving equipment, specialty doctors, and having to transfer patients for higher level of care hospitals. Truly, my coworkers were the best part of my job. I enjoyed the patients most of the time. 

I worked for a General Surgeon for a very long time (18 years),  In the middle of our career we merged with Woman’s Hospital.  Help assist with patients in our minor procedure room, scheduled surgeries, and all appointments pertaining to that patient, cleaned instruments, calling patients back with results, stocked and clean rooms, ordered supplies, anything that needed to be done in the office. Our office ran smoothly.  Joining Woman’s was great for me because, I received a pay increased, a beautiful office, I received  help with the front desk work. I worked directly with/for my surgeon. Best job I ever had. I would love to find another work place like that again. 



From the atmosphere, senior management, Directors, Managers, staff workers, this is a great place to work. A typical day is where you arrive to work, feel good about being at work and knowing your staff and management support what you and your team are doing on a daily basis. The hardest part of the job (if you're coming from a corporate world) is remembering your environment. This is a non-profit facility. If you understand that some things take longer to complete than others, be like a Chameleon, change day to day depending on the challenges placed before you. The most enjoyable part of the job, working with a phenomenal staff that supports you in all of your endeavors.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Horrible managers, no opportunity to advance. 
Employees wonder how it is selected as a “best place to work”. Managers and HR reps are useless and suck ups. 


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Lots of brown nosers. Lots of finger pointing. Managers never take blame for their actions or lack of leadership. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Most days are stressful. Never know if it’s your last bc new managers want to fire long term employees and hire their friends from OLOL or Lane. They aren’t happy until they plug their friends into good jobs in their department.

Woman's Hospital is NOT a backwater operation. It is a forward thinking, Patient focused, national level provider of a myriad of medical services for women, infants and children. 

Woman's Hospital is by far the best employer in Baton Rouge, LA and it is absolutely the BEST place I have ever worked in my +30 year career. Everywhere I've worked I heard the line "We are like family here" but Woman's is the only place where I find that sentiment to be true. The employees genuinely care about one another and, equally importantly, they care about their Patients and Visitors.

I could go on and on about Woman's but will end by simply saying that if your offered the chance to work at Woman's take it and never let go!
