I'm going to tell you my experience and my experience alone. My training was done by a senior member of the company. I could tell he wasn't very happy about doing this service but he seemed alright. They cram you with a lot of information and expect you to remember all of it and give you tests while you have a splitting headache. My first day I was on a forklift and things were okay with the training. It was my first time and within a few days I got used to it pretty quick. The majority of my co-workers were lack of a better word a**holes who were seniors in the union and b*tched and moaned about doing actual work, somehow I and some other people who have been there for a few years were left doing all the heavy lifting. Showing up to work was a dread. The moral at this company is absolutely terrible, you can feel it. I have maybe met one person here who is constantly happy. Even though the majority of my co-workers were rude pr*cks, there are some genuine people here who are kind enough to give you a helping hand when they see that you are struggling and will go out of their way to ensure that you are preforming your job safely and efficiently. Mind you I'm talking about other dock workers in the company.The job is simple. You unload trailers and load the freights to other docks going to different places. The problem here is with the other shipping departments that bring the items in. They don't properly shrink wrap pallets of boxes that well weigh up to 1500 pounds, so even a more experienced forklift operator will have the entire pallet crumbling and spend nearly an hour rebuilding it. The equipment is old and faulty. The computer that was welded on the upper cage of the forklift broke off while I was driving and almost hit me in the face. It would have been bad considering they don't give you full paid medical until you work three months there. The medical is probably the only good thing about the job. After a while I mention to management that I don't think the job is working out for me and give a notice of departure with a date. I then ask the manager about my final paycheck, he tells me that payroll told him that I will be paid every pay period after I have quit on the scheduled days that everyone gets there checks. Don't fall for this b*llsh*t, this is against BOLI law. I personally ask the number for payroll and kindly ask for my final paycheck the following business day of my last day of employment, payroll had no problem abiding to that request when I asked them nicely and respectfully. They agreed. The very next day after my shift I was told that I was being let go due to an unsatisfactory in my performance. Keep in mind I was given maybe 3 days of training with some co-workers. The only good thing about working for this company is the benefits and that I heard they pay for your cdl but you have to work for them for 1-2 years as part of that contract and that there are some genuine people that are cool and willing to everything they can to help you if you don't understand something because they get it. I hope this helps and please reconsider if you think about working here for this company in the current state it is. I highly recommend you reconsider your options. There are better companies out there where you can do the exact same thing if not better with more pay and better perks. If you let them take advantage of you trust me they will. 

My only references prior to driving linehaul here were from NEMF and UPS Freight and YRC is definately the end of the line for me, by far the best gig ive had in LTL game.

NEMF the pay was poor and didnt get paid for time not driving, UPS Freight would have been great financially if I had 7 or 8 years to wait while working some weeks 1 day a week on their extra board, some weeks i only made 340 dollars and was on call the rest of the days. their seniority board is like santas list at the montgomery ny barn, like 200+ guys in front of me, so when i came to YRC it really was a breath of fresh air.

i was on call on the extra board my first 7 months but they called every day and the money was the best ive made in trucking thus far.  i get paid mileage and hourly while i wait for bills, drop and hook sets, or brakedown.  when i get a layover i get put up in a hotel, many of which are nice spots.  a few years back when yellow and roadway merged the merger wasnt done correctly under the ceo at that time, that and the recession in 08 hit all trucking pretty hard, so the teamsters here agreed to a 15% giveback of wages until 2019, so the current top rate is 15% less than it will be again in 2019, but the money is still good, my first year i easily brought in 64k and only worked 5 days a week.  the benefits are FREE through the union and are very good, same with dental and presecription and vision.  

there are a lot of older drivers who wont be driving very much longer, maybe another few years so the company is hiring like crazy, ive gone up about 30 seniority spots to th point where i have a time start bid and have only been here a little over a year.  the unionaspect of the gig is priceless IMO especially in an industry that seems to be getting worse for the driver by the minute.  once i made the list i am all but untouchable to be getting fired for anything short of murder, and even then i got a shot to get my job back.

the work is straight forward linehaul and at most barns the jockeys do all the hooks so realistically i have days where all i do is get in and drive, never touch ANY freight and rarely get all greasy, ups i had to load my own pups!  

management for the most part lets us do our thing as long as we show up nad do our job we are left to do it with no micro managing at all, which coming from ups is my favorite part of the gig.    all in all i give it an 8 or 9 out of ten, i sure as heak aint going anywhere.  its a good time to have gotten in with these guys when i did, for anyone new or thinking about starting, it dont get any better elsewhere, and im not sure if thats a good or bad thing but it says a lot about the industry as a whole which is sad, but id rather be at yrc than anywhere else, especially non union shop, the heak with that!

This job is a beehive. Lures you in with the sweet honey of decent hourly pay only to find it out the bees of management sting you to death by degrading, bullying and harassing you. 

488 in Toledo is the worst job i have ever worked. The problem is, it has all the ability and potential to be the best job in the world. The supervisors are great, the manager unfortunately makes your life miserable. If you ever do anything wrong at all? 
Examples : 
-Calling in late
-Taking a sick day 
-Respond to her emails questioning her in any way. Even for clarification. 
-suggesting in any way she may be wrong
-missing a day of work or leaving early(even if you are sick, have an accident, or a heart attack on the clock. Yes, this has all happened)
Etc.. 

You then become a target, usually for around 6 months minimum if not forever. And will be disciplined for anything and everything you do. Typically new discipline fabricated on the spot. 

If you have questions or do something wrong or are unsure about the new processes (which change weekly if not daily) she will suggest strongly that you are stupid with comments along the lines of “how could anyone get this wrong?”, “there is no reason in the world you should not know how to do this”, “how do you not understand this??” Etc.. When simply she could just answer your question and let you get back to work without feeling stupid for asking questions. 

She will call you in to her office to question you on your production where if you try to explain yourself? She just yells at you and makes degrading remarks about how “anyone can do our job” and we “get paid too much for her to be nice to us, we just need to do our job better than we did yesterday”

Besides that, this job has potential. But upper managements inability to put any focus on employee morale in anyway leaves the work environment extremely hostile. Most people are terrified to even talk to co-workers. I’ve been there over 10 years and out of 80 co workers that I’m writing 100 feet of every day i have almost never had or been allowed any social interaction with them. I know about 8 peoples names 4 of which are management. And I’ve had the ability to have friendly social interactions with even less than that. There is no family environment, just fear based. 

You work hard to be ignored and pray constantly you don’t generate an error or pop up on the radar of Angela because then your work life is over for at least a year. 

Pay and benefits are good, but not with a job that no matter how hard you try effects your entire life inside and outside work. Meds help make the job more bearable, but it breaks my heart suggesting that to anyone who just wants to do a good job and treated like s person at their place of employment. 

Also, there is a union but.. is never once helped with this problem. Neither has HR.

I'll Tell you how it really was.  I worked here for 2 months.  1st Healthcare. Yes it's free.  You don't get it after 30 days.  The first 30 days is the probationary period, company only.  After 30 days the company has to pay the union a total of 8 payments before they will give you Healthcare Insurance. Not even the union trust YRC. That is a total of 90 days.  When you are hired the company considers you a 1percenter.  (causaul driver) for first 30 days. After 30 days they can make you bid for a job.  I worked 6am til 6pm m-f for 2 months.  Then the whole company rebidded.  Yes the whole company including dock workers.  Some dockworkers are also CDL Drivers.  This company rebids twice a year.  Fall and Spring. I was second to last on the bid sheet.  After all 50ish drivers bidded.  It was my turn.  only 2 bids left.  5pm dockworkers or a 9pm Untility Driver. Until Driver is basically a line haul driver. So after 30 days you can go from having a normal 6am CDL Driver P&D Driver.  To a 5pm Dock workers with a CDL license.   YRC can get away with this because they are the individuals who create these Bids.  Basically jobs and the schedule.  Union can't help you because they don't create the jobs or bids.  This is YRC getting around the whole union thing.  I been a CDL Driver for 18 years.  Seen just about everything but never seen anything like this.  Why doesn't all P&D drivers bid together.  Why doesn't all Dockworkers bid together.  The truth is YRC doesn't need P&D drivers.  All those position are filled with drivers that's been with the company for 10+ years.  The company needs Dockworkers.  That's what ur gonna be after 30 days.  Not a driver.   Your gonna be in the freezing cold unloading and loading freight for 12 hrs.  Your schedule is gonna start at 5pm and end maybe at 3am in the morning.  In the interview with the terminal manger.  He gonna tell you a bunch of bull.  "I need drivers to move this freight".  "The last guy left because is didn't want to work".  He's lying out of his teeth.   The truth is this company gonna treat you like a King for the first 30 days.  Maybe even 60 days.  But when it's time to bid.  Your gonna be a dockworkers starting at 5pm. Company can create better bids for it's employees but they won't.  They designed these bids for specific coverage so they can operate 24/7.   The Union can't do nothing about it.   Giving they 60 bucks a month for nothing.   The terminal manager is a hothead, Liar.  I have a few other words to describe him but i'll keep it clean.  The fact is this terminal has 57 jobs.  only 15 to 20 of them are P&D jobs.  So ur gonna be doing something else you don't want to do or didn't apply for after 30 days.

This is actually a nice job to have. The job is pretty straightforward. You clock in, go to your desk, check emails, review errors and begin billing. When you're going through training, everything will seem so foreign and may become a little overwhelming but if you keep just trying and start getting the hang of it, you'll begin to see it's very simple. The hardest part about the job is working for 8 hours just billing and dealing with boredom. The pay is decent even for PTs for 3 hours. It takes very long to move up from PT to FT. You basically have to wait until someone leaves and that's rarely going to happen since people have been there for 8+ years. The insurance is great as well.

The worst thing about the job is the main manager. She's a pain and the only thing I believe is hurting the office morale. The other supervisors are all very cool and I do not have any issues with them. With the main manager, rules can change out of nowhere and if you get on her bad side, she will target you. At one point, she put locks on the bathrooms. She eventually gave took them off awhile later. As of recently, the best thing with handling boredom and actually helped with billing believe it or not, was being able to listen to music and watch movies and things on iPads and things. As of last week, she changed the rules and basically canceled all of this. She says your phone, iPad, radio or whatever has to be placed in your desks drawer. You'd think okay, fine, I can work with that but she also said you cannot even change playlist or anything until your break. So basically if you was listening to a podcast, book or playlist and it went off, you cannot even change it until at least 4 hours. So unless you have a very long book or just listen to random music, it's nothing you can do. 

We used to be able to eat at our desks, recently, she decided to say we cannot eat at our desks anymore. You can eat chips and fruits but no pizza, a sandwich etc etc. It sucks because people have been doing this for years and all of a sudden things just change with her and you have to adjust. So if you ever come to work here, just try to avoid her at all costs.

So like I said, it's a good job but it's becoming worse and worse because of the manager, Angela. I do not plan on staying long because of all these changes and it makes the job much harder sitting there without barely being able to listen to anything.

I started out as a non-career/casual employee. I was then hired as a career employee after about 7 months.

 During this time, there was no schedule. You were literally on-call 24/7 and they didn't hesitate to wake you up at 2 am to call you in for a 5 am start. The environment was extremely fast-paced. I don't know how we managed to make it through a week without someone being severely injured. But, in fact, injuries were rare - EXTREMELY rare. 

Roadway Express (Later to become YRC Worldwide) is a union company. This means there is a TON of politics involved just in being there. You have union bigwigs running around scowling at you because you're working your tail off to get hired (they are always pushing for a work slow-down.) You have managers looking over your shoulder trying to make sure you're doing your job. 

The job is pretty simple: you pull freight out of THIS trailer and load it into THAT trailer. This is using a forklift. If you don't have prior forklift experience, they will certify you and you will become a pro within a few days maybe as much as a couple of weeks. There's no consistency in what you move with the forklift. It could be a truck chasis this time and a drum of sulfuric acid the next time. You had to learn hazardous materials and load combination issues. The pay was outstanding since it was a union negotiated wage. But the union also got in the way of you being able to just make it through an 8 hour shift. 

Once I got hired, I was able to then bid on a schedule and was able to have more predictability in my work/life balance. After spending about a year on the forklift, I decided to try my hands at the trucks and got myself "yard qualified." This afforded me the opportunity to learn to drive and maneuver in an environment that was supervised. I could build skills in operating the trucks without possibly getting tickets or accidents (on the road.) Once I had a year in the yard, I then took a month leave-of-absence and got my CDL. I came back and drove locally (delivery/pick-up.) The only reason I am no longer there is because they laid everyone off as they merged with another company.

I'm a linehaul driver and have been with the company 19 years.  This job doesn't get much more laid back.  You show up on time, get your paperwork.  Perform a pretrip inspection and drive to your destination.  Upon arrival, you perform a post trip inspection, get your belongings from the truck and go relax at hotel.  Most of the employees that have issues are their own worst enemy. Yes it is a union environment and like any job there are good apples and bad.  Yes being on call on the extra board can suck, its called paying your dues.  We all did it.  You're not going to walk into any job and get the premium shift with the premium runs.  As far as the pay goes, the cpm may be slightly lower than some of our competitors but when you factor in that our health insurance has a zero copay even for a family plan and it looks a whole lot better.  Many of our competitors take $125 - $150/ week for insurance.  Again we pay $0 for insurance and we get compensated for EVERYTHING... Drop and hook, paid. Breakdown, paid.  No loads after 14 hours in the hotel, paid layover.  Shop time, paid. The equipment has been mostly replaced in the past 3 years.  Some of the city tractors are older, but they get the job done.  If you want a big shiny Pete or KW go work for an OTR company and sleep in the truck while you're gone for 3-5 weeks at a time and can only shower every couple of days while making $50k a year..  The extra board is never gone more than 3-4 days, most are home every other day, bid drivers are home daily or every other day depending on their run.  Extra board averages $60k-$65k their first year.  Many veteran drivers make $100k-$125k / year.  One more thing, there are only a few ways to actually get fired from this job, they are called cardinal sins... ie) fighting on company property, stealing... Again the ones that have the most problems are their own worst enemies and will have the same problems anywhere they go. If that sounds like a hard job, stay in your MOMs basement playing Xbox smoking weed and continue to be a drain on society.

Most of what I do comes down to really managing personalities. YRC is a union company, so juggling union bylaws, work agreements and individual personalities are obstacles I work through every day. In this job, someone's communication and leadership skills will make or break their success. Luckily, I have been very fortunate at YRC and moved in the ranks fairly quickly due to my ability to communicate with the union.

More specific job daily duties would include managing work flow and assignments. Managing and assuring the work force are meeting daily production, safety, and load factor goals. In one 10 hour day, I will generally walk 8 miles as I venture the dock and check in with employees to ensure they have what they need or communicate further guidance on other assignments.

YRC is working on re-establishing themselves in the market place, with that said, there is a lot of pressure to meet rising goals. I welcome the challenge and feel the culture is turning around. This could quite possibly be the hardest part and most enjoyable part of the job. I want to see the company succeed, so day in and day out, I give it 110%. The flip side of that is communicating and encouraging the employees to buy into the fact that we can make a difference. The union employees have taken a 15% pay cut and no longer receive a contribution to their pension, so moral and belief in the company culture is down. What I've tried to bring to this job is synergy. Getting people to once again work together and believe everyone is on the same team, is where a lot of my efforts go.

YRC is undoubtedly in a questionable state to whether or not the company will survive. Nonetheless, I am happy to be working and they have treated me well.

Working for YRCW was difficult due to being purchased by them.  Employed by Roadway before purchase was one of the best companies I have had the privilege to be a part of.  With YRCW came business changes that forced 1000's of jobs to be eliminated, which resulted in employees doing 2 and 3 jobs simultaneously.  This made providing excellent customer service difficult particularly when my team of up to 20 CS reps were responsible for corporate accounts (see resume).  Within 2 years we worked under 6 managers, one for approximately 2 months.  The most difficult part of my job as supervisor was to motivate and encourage my employees.  During that time we earned the first ever CS award from Mattel, and was also recognized with a similar award from Target for managing the movement of 200,000 lbs of freight during the holiday season.  The most enjoyable part of the job was being successful in providing the ultimate in service and rewarding my employees (which cost me personally approximately $300 per month).  They deserved better than I was able to provide via YRCW but I "had their back" and left myself vulnerable.  I am not the type of employee who looks the other way when something is remiss, however I also understand business and feel I am able to consider both sides, including the reason for business - making a profit.  I always managed as if I was spending my own dime and feel good about how I performed when I was released from my position due to downsizing.  Working for Roadway was much more pleasant; they held employees in high regard and rewarded them accordingly.  The culture was positive and the job enjoyable.

As with any buy-out, takeover, etc. people are going to be disgruntled however having experienced these situations 3 times (prior to the buyout of Roadway) I believe I had more understanding than most.
