Zenith Insurance Company

Zenith Insurance is by far the best company I have ever worked for. Their business goals are long term and progressive which makes them financially stable. I love their "outside of the box" thinking. They encourage their employees to provide ideas on how to improve the process and also request feedback when a new process is being considered. My reason for staying with this company for multiple years was the fact that they balance financial stability with being ethical. They are true to their clients as well as the staff. It's not uncommon to have staff stay for over 10+ years.
Since they are so innovative, process change is not uncommon however it is the reason why they are one of the front runners in this ever-changing industry.
As far as job resources, there is no shortage of on-line tools that provide instruction and guidelines on how to work on a particular task ie: wage calculation, letter templates etc.
My only complaint would be the annual review process which is very lengthy and time-consuming; however they heard a number of us commenting about this and are working on a more efficient process.
Regarding culture- they are very team-driven. Most employees are focused on assisting the team vs advancing their own career. To me this is priceless. Management is continuously supporting this. 

Zenith has excellent benefits and take very good care of their employees. Executive management and the Board are topnotch. It’s unfortunate their  VP levels gossip and bad mouth the executive leadership. Performance reviews aren’t based on productivity, cost containment, and professional accomplishments. It’s based on making certain each member of the team is compensated equally and not on merit. If staff  challenges appropriateness of vague or questionable policies or procedures,  manager’s insecurities result in adverse reactions, instead of welcoming new and innovative practical ideas.  My position was exciting and always challenged me professionally and personally. Too bad my manager spoke out of both sides of their mouth. I would definitely return to the position given the opportunity without my direct report. Although, I received glowing recommendations from an executive, I applied to return when my boss retired, I never heard back from Zenith, despite saving in excess of several million dollars annually. So, Zenith kept VP on after being demoted and dumped them into an area that their inexperience caused overwhelming insecurities and deceit. 

Stay away. Since starting here they have continuously laid people off in my region. Between layoffs and turnover there have been about 12 people gone in a yr and a half or so (our office is small as well; maybe has roughly 35 people in totality).

They also target people who perform on the basis of whether they simply like you or not and threaten you if your performance is not up to their unachievable standards in an effort to drive you out. 

No growth AT ALL. You will be pigeonholed.

Corporate is knowledgeable I will give them that. But they are too involved in the every day decisions of claims examiners. We are not allowed to make a decision; rather we are here to make sure the files are clear and concise so that corporate can pull up a file and make a decision on our behalf. 

CONS:

MICROMANAGING to the extreme, Everyone is of the mindset of "CYA" all the time, Managers posting file notes in files making adjusters look stupid, going after those who perform rather than those who don't when there is clear evidence the non-performers are horrible (look at their claim files!!), Financials have been down year after year and not getting better any time soon, (likely leading to reduction in staff)

My first six years at Zenith as a legal admin. were difficult because of the nature of Workers' Comp defense insurance, the case loads and sheer volume of work. I gained from the constant education of employees, from software to time management, the free seminars were endless. Professional improvement of the individual was a mainstay, as well as motivation in areas such as fitness (on-site gym), nutrition (healthy/gourment, affordable cafeteria), family (counseling was one of many benefits offered). Last two years as a unit coordinator allowed room to grow in communications and tune in to Zenith's role in the industry as a leader. Difficult to work in controversial environment caused by Medical Control Unit and its manager. Haven't been there since 2009 and expect the culture may have changed with new ownership. During my time there the owner, CEO gave back to the community with award-winning services provided by employee volunteering while on the clock. Company was 500 people, downsized by roughly one-third in 2009.

In a typical day at work, you are required to receive customers and the office is always very full. When customers arrive we give them coffee or tea to distract them while their insurance policies are being made.

The management there is not really the best but they are doing a great job. They are at the top.
The office opens at 7:30 am Cameroon time where every worker is expected to be there. On Fridays we wear our Zenithe Uniform.
The hardest part of the job is to convince the job is to find potential clients.
The job becomes enjoyable when you have passion for it. It is enjoyable when we win medals for the company and most importantly when the clients are happy.
The company is very welcoming and they teach alot. I will advice every owner of property to ensure the property with this company.

Zenith has a lot of employees who stay for a very long time and they are very particular about who they hire, in my experience, you have the highest level of management, ie CEOs and people trying to make it into a good company to work for with lots of surveys about employee satisfaction and classes designed to help interdepartment cooperation. The problem comes from lower level and middle management that want to seem important by creating busy work and doing everything in their power to stop employees from implementing change that would make work easier and everyone happier as a result. So in the end all those meetings and surveys don't result in anything but time wasted and extra frustration. Personally I don't think its a great company to work for, probably not the worst either.

Typical day at work now is pushing paperwork and handling tasks. Gone are the days we are able to make a business decision without management oversight. Management also loves to hold meetings to listen to themselves talk. They think it's resulting in success, but you should listen to your team. It is miserable and suffocating. 

Workplace culture is good, work life balance is a priority of the company, but it took COVID restrictions for them to realize we can work successfully at home. Otherwise there would be no remote working opportunities.  

Hardest part of job is feeling undervalued and that no matter how much you provide feedback, you're told people don't like change but you'll get used to it. 

Most enjoyable part of the job is the good benefits and the coworkers. 

As a regional safety & health consultant, I was limited some by my AVP but overall she was pretty good.  Given freedom to put together my own statewide presentation which was very successful.  Weakness was lack of technical expertise beyond mine.  As in a lot of companies, we were limited by the upper management’s mindset & a tendency to fill out lower levels with yes people.  

Zenith has effectively adapted itself over the years to be in positive sync with the economic climate that influences the Workers Compensation industry.  The company continues to be an industry leader and has built a multi-faceted and knowledgeable workforce. In a nutshell, great people to work with, great food at the Z-Cafe, (free coffee) and easy access to resources to help get the work done.  The leadership team is very effective and clear in disseminating its vision for the future.  I enjoyed working at Zenith and recommend the company to anyone interested in working with skilled and caring professionals.

Transparency from and dialogue with executive management is fantastic and completely unique in a company with over 1500 employees spread across 13 branch offices.

Work-life balance is top notch. Generous vacation & sick time, floating & personal holidays, and ample resources and benefits offerings that prioritize the employee's health and wellbeing.

The organization has been in business for many decades and is putting pieces in place that will allow us to grow and succeed well into the future.
