I was going to be a Zoom Associate before PA school, but three days into job training I knew it wasn't going to be a good fit. 

Responsibilities: 
They want their ZA's to manage their clinics, do inventory, phlebotomy, flu & BV tests, check patients in and out, make sure their insurance has been updated, and keep the clinics clean. All while chatting non-stop using an app called HipChat to communicate with providers & several other departments which each have separate "chat rooms." 

Pay: All this responsibility for $14. They promise $17 the second year (if you last that long). 10-12 hour training and work shifts. One perk is their comprehensive health insurance, but full time employees shouldn't be without for that kind of thing in the first place. 

Red flags: Your peers (Zoom associates) train you to do phlebotomy for patients in a dingy old apartment building above the SE Hawthorne clinic. They limit visits to 15 minutes no matter the physical complaint (unless it is a speciality service). Providers are forced to interface with their computers for a majority of the patient visit because the company prides themselves on being modern and technologically up to date. At what cost?

Culture: Our onboarding trainer spent quite a bit of time talking (or gloating) about how she got her upper management position by doing such a great job as a Zoom Associate. The culture breeds brown nosing: it offers meretricious opportunities for job growth. 

Qualms:  I was charged for a Hep B titer by a laboratory months after leaving.  This was something that was mandatory in order to work there. They overwork and underpay the emoloyees who are the first to see patients in clinic, where patient experience really matters. They hired me explicitly for the SE Division clinic and then told me I would have to float to all of their clinics for three months until the new clinic was built. Even though, when asked during my interview, I told them inmy preference was NOT to "float" (drive to all of their clinics). 

This is a job for someone right out of their undergraduate degree with retail or customer service experience (or for someone who doesn't expect much for their employer).

The Patient Support Center  is a call center job where they listen to your calls and critique everything you say. Patients can be very mean on the phone and you just have to take it while it eats at your mental health. You are required to take 50+ calls a day, make outbound calls and respond to emails. They publish your call and email count in a weekly email they send out to all employees to shame you into taking more calls and writing more emails. You will never please management or be seen as anything other than a replaceable cog in a broken machine. At least 6 people in my department alone just quit because of this. They score your call ratings every 2 weeks, and if you didn't make a mistake, they find something wrong with your calls just to please the higher ups. Nothing is ever enough for them. You are required to work holidays, including christmas if they don't have coverage. They will call you on your day off and say you're required to work because it's a holiday and they don't have coverage. The culture is full of toxic positivity and you they have an extremely strict attendance policy. You never want to miss a day. Even though providers are constantly calling out every single day and we have to call those pts to reschedule them. Outbound calls do NOT count towards the 50-60 inbound calls you have to take daily. If a provider calls out and they had 12 patients you need to reschedule, you very well might not make your call quota for the day and it seen as your fault. You are constantly pulled in a million different directions and expected to remember a million things and be perfect all the time. My mental health is at an all time low and I don't know if I will recover. The pressure you are under as well as the scrutiny, is too much for any human to handle. 
 

Busy clinic but excellent team, help always available. Upper management very open to new ideas and improvements. Running on time is extremely important, but they have an innovative system to make it possible to run on time, where they block open slots in real-time if you are getting behind. Pay is hourly and you only do the admin during your shift, so you don't have to chart for hours at home and manage a home inbox. Good evidence-based algorithms for all the most common patient presentations. Patients appreciate the on-site dispensing of commonly used meds as well as the ease of getting an appointment. This is a corporation, not a non-profit, so not the place to come if you want to serve the poor or to do comprehensive visits where you address multiple complex problems in one go, but on the other hand, your patients don't have to wait because you will mostly run on time, and Zoom also provides the most affordable care in town for the demographic that isn't poor but can't quite afford insurance (they also see most commercial insurances). Management was transparent about what metrics they wanted providers to focus on improving (efficiency, patient satisfaction, revenue, etc.)

A typical day at ZoomCare often involved very low patient volume, yet still felt disorganized due to constant staffing changes and extremely high turnover. Despite the slower pace, there was a lack of structure and direction, largely tied to inconsistent leadership and the absence of clear executive presence.

While I developed independence and adaptability, support from management was limited and communication was often inconsistent. The ongoing turnover made it difficult to maintain any sense of team cohesion.

A major concern was that patient care did not always feel like the top priority. There were instances of lab work being mislabeled or lost, which raises serious concerns about quality and follow-through. These issues, combined with low morale and lack of accountability, contributed to a negative workplace culture.

The hardest part of the job was navigating the constant changes and lack of clear leadership. The most enjoyable part was that the job itself was very easy due to the consistently low patient volume.

With only 4 total people staffed at each clinic, an associate and a provider for half of the week and then the same for the second half, there are a lot of responsibilities put on the associate. There is so much information that you are responsible for either knowing, or being able to access on the information database the call the "Hive". Don't expect any help or answers from management, because they will tell you either they don't know the answer, or that you should ask your fellow associates. They don't cover all the policies and procedures during training and orientation, and since you work on your own you are expected to learn on the go and usually on the spot. They also won't tell you about things like differentials or mileage reimbursement, so you'll only find out if another employee mentions it or you happen to stumble across it on the "Hive", which I think is a very unethical practice. 

They will hire anyone. Fire anyone. 
Typically, the training when starting with the company is less than a month long. You are expected to perform duties for multiple areas/departments in a medical clinic, from front desk checkingin and out patients, insurance verification, collecting co pays, scheduling appointments, clinic’s inventory, pharmacy tech inventory, cleaning services, phlebotomist, and medical assisting when needed. You are thrown into the work with little training of their complicated EHR system. Expected to succeed. Some workers within your team are not helpful at all. Little to no supervision from any management for months. This company constantly struggles to maintain revenue. Frequent lay offs. One positive thing I can say, the providers are amazing to work with. Always triple check your insurance services before booking an appointment here, or you will be surprised with a big bill in a couple of weeks. There is no accountability for their own mistakes in billing you incorrectly. 

Provider's pay is great, 99th %-ile nationally. Clinic Assistant's pay is sadly not so great. New CEO every 2-3 years and the company reinvents itself with little continuity. It's a top heavy company with proud executives that invest little to where the company generates revenue. Managers have zero medical background and come from retail industry and talk like politicians. They want all of the company to be a mirror image of the "brand," if you're not "Zoomie" you'll get little attention. All providers have the same identical privileges without utilizing your individual talents or prior experience or training. Their in-house EMR is truly less than desirable, limited, time consuming to use and buggy, but there is supposedly a new one being built. They decided to waste money employing an entire IT team for over a year on building a new one from scratch (how much is that costing anyway?) vs. buying a new one ready to go with servicing support that would've been better and cheaper. Numerous other poor business decisions that will prevent you from getting a competitive bonus. The headache of it all just isn't worth your sanity. Your peers are your only saving grace because misery loves company. 

Unfortunately, what you have heard about the company is probably true. The focus on rapidly opening more locations rather than improving the operations of the existing ones is quite problematic. Despite what is professed in gimicky marketing, the focus is quantity over quality. Zoom Care rolls out new systems and changes directions frequently, with little planning and proper communication. This results in lack of continuity, decreased productivity, and stressed employees. The departments don’t talk and the high turnover rate and poor training results in confused and angry patients. The race to keep up with this growth results in lots of sloppiness. Out of touch upper management don’t seem to listen to concerns or suggestions, which continues dysfunction and decreased morale. They are either lying to themselves or gaslighting everyone into thinking everything is “perfect”. Listen to your employees who work hard to do the day to day work. 

A typical day consists of checking patients in and out, running point of care labs, rooming patients, and doing phlebotomy. I learned a lot about the medical field and that was the best part of the job. Management changed a lot when I was employed at Zoomcare and it has become extremely micromanaging while the company experiences changes. We as employees are expected to deal with the vast changes of the company at a moment's notice. There was very little structure in the company, it was obviously going under and failing, but the clinic team were the one's dealing with the brunt of this issue. They over whelmed many employees and burned a lot of us out, I would never recommend working at this company. 

The worst job I've ever had. I often was extremely overwhelmed by the workload. Managers show how little they care by making empty promises over and over. I asked for support I desperately needed many times and got nothing. The worst part was they would say it was going to change or "this wont happen again." 

You're expected to do inventory, check-in/out, book walk-ins, rapid labs, blood draws once trained, dispense medication, and help patients figure out their insurance. Also you need to be ready to help with anything the provider needs during an appointment. I could go on. 
Some clinic assistants manage clinics that are extremely busy while others see half the patient volume and are compensated the same. The $22 per hour was not worth the anxiety this job gave me.
