only full time workers gets benefits and every time someone new got hired the workers who’ve been with the company for years hours would get cut not to mention the work drama inside the company and even when you express your concerns or an issue when things should be confidential it’s not they just report back to the person you’ve had issues with I recently experience drama and I thought by expressing the issues with the store manager and corporate would help however corporate only created more drama for me by telling the coworker and manager that I had an issue with that’s basically putting my life at risk corporate later apologized however I still felt as if I could never trust anyone from corporate nor the store
Manager after that issue things just went more downhill from there let me start off by saying if you express your concerns about how things are done it would only create a problem and they will consider you as a problem the workers who work truck shop on the clock and put the good merchandise to the side for themselves that’s the number one reason this store location never really have anything good on the floor sometimes not to me mention  you have employees and mangers who abuse the merchandise holds and what I mean by that I express my concerns about a supervisor who would put things on hold and keep extending they holds until eventually those merchandise became clearance however there is no more holding for customers and employees as of august 30 ,2020 people who work truck in the stock room still hide merchandise even after Bealls have made an announcement stating no more holds are allowed  they would still contribute to put the merchandise in the MOS boxes or the z-racks and have it back there for weeks at a time before purchasing or if they decide they want to purchase or not!! Things has changed tremendously at this store location the store manager would train his new employees to make fake  announcements when they felt like someone is stealing merchandise and that’s usually when minorities walks in the store or random people they thought looks suspicious they would announce over the intercom security line one or security you have a phone call or I need security up front this is the only store location I’ve ever seen do this before it makes the customers feel unwanted not all customers steals yes this store location has a huge problem with dishonest customers but that’s truly not how you go about things to fix the issue I think they should take a step back and try a different approach majority of the works would walk out and take random smoke breaks seems like every 15 minutes or so they would be outside smoking a cigarette this store has an issue with the ac unit it gets very hot in the summer time that customers and workers would complain about the issue the store has a huge whole in the roof that causes bats and unwanted animals that you can literally hear them through the roof and walls store manager only cares about putting out shoes no recovering the store or cleaning the bathrooms etc the break room really haven’t had a deep cleaning in 4 years or more pets control really should come out on the regular for this store to give it a good spray for unwanted pets they miss treat they loyal workers it’s really a shame how they get treated when you first get hire they express so much on how they are a family but it’s not like a family all they do is gossip more then they actually do work would literally stand in the middle of the floor for hours at a time and not do any work keep in mind they are on Bealls time on the clock and would gossip for hours or sit in chairs in the stock room when they should be unloading truck I’ve never seen a organization like this before that allows this type of behavior to continue this is a very small community everyone literally knows each we don’t have many shopping stores that has pretty much everything I think Bealls would continue to do great for this community however I think they need to find new store management everything falls on the store manager and when you have one who only cares about making money that’s a big problem a lot of things got brushed underneath the rug when I work for Bealls and it should’ve never happen in my honest opinion although I’m sadden to not be working for the company I literally thought I would retire from this company grateful for the opportunity they gave me I think the biggest thing I will miss is literally the customers the customers is what kept me going seeing them making them smile or laugh or even just having a short conversation with them the interaction of getting to know them is what I will miss the most 

Burkes is the absolute worse place. Burkes pays at least 2--5 dollars LESS than any other retail store.  First off, the store is generally run by only two employees at a time. One cashier's and the other tries to do the rest. When you have to be at the register, you are expected to get two credit cards per day, every day  and at least five loyalty cards. 
There are never enough people to help with the delivery truck. You are expected to have it unpacked, sorted, sized and put out on the floor within 24 hrs which is impossible. 
The manager (Joe) is lazy and absolutely incompetent. He is never there to help with the truck and when you bring it to the attention of the district manager (mary) she always replies with " it may feel like he isn't here helping but I promise that just isn't true". That is her answer for every complaint that an employee has. 
The young ladies at the store have been stalked by customers and have even been groped by a customer. The associate that was groped by a customer was completely distraught and the manager Joe completely ignored the situation. When Mary the DM was told about it, she too turned a blind eye to the situation. These young ladies feel unsafe at work and I find it completely unacceptable. On more than one occasion they have been put in uncomfortable or stalking type situations and no one does anything about it. 

The DM and the manager have absolutely no appreciation for the staff- they promise everything and deliver nothing.
My final straw was when Joe (a short, obese, balding man) had a mental break down in the store in front of associates and customers. He thought I was going to quit so he literally started crying and begging me to stay while telling me how much he loved me and needed me and put his head on my shoulder while doing it. I was so shocked, appalled and embarrassed by his behavior, I was not able to continue working at Burkes. Can you possibly imagine the manager having an emotional break down in front of the entire store and nobody thinks it is a big deal? Mary asked me  why I can't just get over it-  Mary dismissed his behavior as a misunderstanding. I don't know how that situation could be misunderstood but I absolutely refuse to work for a company that has such little regard for the employees. Joe and Mary are incompetent and are completely void of character.  Mary is new to her position so she is probably pretty overwhelmed and cannot handle such atrocities. Joe is new as a manager but has worked for the company for many years and yet acts like he is completely oblivious as to how things should be done. 
Do not work here. DDs and Dirt Cheap would be better options if you need to work in this area. 
Also, when hired they promise part time hrs, which generally equal 10-15 hrs, nobody can live on the lousy pay and hrs.

The culture of Bealls Outlet has been dramatically improving over the 2018-2019 year. The company rolled out a new initiative that was focused on making employees love their jobs so employees work harder/give better customer service- which is great! 

If you end up with a good store manager, the job is fun, fast paced, very hard work, and very team-oriented but with plently of thank-yous and personal connections with the management and team mates so you do actually enjoy your job. When you get home, your feet are sore, but it was a good day and the work isn't too difficult. 

They actively look to promote within, and if you have a positive attitude, don't mind relocating, and aren't afraid of a little sweating and retail merchandising, you can get promoted fairly easily (give or take a year's worth of management training) and even get your own store, starting around $18. You get raises as your store's sales go up (as I understand it).

However...... If you get stuck with a petty, lazy, tempermental or vindictive manager, the only thing you can do is request to relocate or quit. I had one such experience and I tried reporting the hostile work environment to the district manager, but nothing was ever done. I wish I had reported it to HR. 

On the contrary, I had one manager in another district who was the sweetest person I've ever worked for, and I happily worked my tail off for her and loved coming to work every day. The team was great and the drama was minimal. 

Are far as retail work goes, Bealls makes it simple and it's all about teaching and training you, so that's fun to be constantly challenging yourself to the next level, especially when you visit and work at other stores. However, the pay is not so great. When I left Bealls Outlets (in 2019, Georgia), cashiers started at $9/hr and supervisors started at $10/hr. I was a seasoned supervisor making only $11/hr. I've heard of some stores starting higher, but that's rare as far as I know. 

Bealls is a great company to work for because of the strong push for a positive and encouraging culture, but they've lost of lot of good people because of blind spots in the upper management (too focused on numbers, not focused enough on personally investigating concerns and supporting the team that builds the numbers), and because of the low pay.

They want people with the work ethic and customer service of a professional but only pay people like a newbie highschooler. I think if Bealls raised their pay to a more competitive level, they would keep their great talent longer and attract an even better talent pool. 

That being said, Bealls Outlet is still making lots of company-wide changes that I think will make Bealls an even better place to work. I personally would have stayed except for the pay because I loved my team and my manager.

The job itself is very easy. Went from an associate to a supervisor in 3 months, company needs. As an associate you’re working the registers and recovering the store. As a supervisor you take care of office things opening and closing the store and on the floor you’re also recovering, working on department projects, offering customer service here and there on the floor. If there’s a truck team like some locations they are the ones who unload sort and put out truck, if not it’s up to associates and managers. Some people can be really nice and for the team. Always helping each other, lifting each other up. At the end of the day we’re all here to do the same thing, we all got things to take care of. On another note:

1. Pay is low especially for associates. They say you get a raise after 90 days but you don’t it happens when it happens. 
2. High turnover. Since the current management 12 supervisors quit, 2 year period. In the past four months we lost 3 supervisors and 1 more is considering. In the past four months 6 cashiers.
3. There’s only a few cashiers and no pay roll so as a manager expect to be the cashier for about 2 of 5 shifts.
4. Gossip circles through different locations via the store manager, so much for setting an example. 
5. Speaking of setting an example, expect the store manager here to sit in the office the whole shift on the phone with their friends, other stores they likes to gossip to, and their “partner” of the week. Or if we are lucky we will see them roam the store on the phone. To each his own but it’s weird when coming from a location where the store manager is nothing less of very hands on. 
6. Empty promises. Was offered a position at this location, transferred just to learn another supervisor was offered the same position, thankfully we’re both the teamwork type so both of us would be happy no matter which one actually got it. But all for them to hire someone from outside, higher ups thinks “hiring someone from outside the company is better than promoting someone who knows the company and been training”. So instead supervisors get to train assistant managers to step on the people who taught them. 
7. Management tends to forget we are all human and adults. Due to the different age gaps management tends to talk to supervisors and associates as if they are their children. Simply remind them their kids are at the house and not holding a copy of the same key they’re holding..
8. Loss Prevention can be a bit intrusive. Of course LP watches cameras and helps stop shop lifters. However one worker mentioned going home and watching the store on their big flat screen tv. During shifts makes senses but watching the workers at the store off shift in your free time seems a bit like someone needs a hobby. Thankfully not with the company anymore.

Expect 5 hours (2-4 days a week) maximum for a shift when you start working as a cashier. It was my first job so I didn’t know what to expect at the time, I wish someone had told me. Good shoes are needed as you will be on your feet all day and the hard tile floors are unforgiving.

The first manager I had was perfect and started to  increase my hours (8 hours, 4+ days a week) when I showed that I was dedicated to my work. I only quit because there was a new manager and she had drastically cut my hours. (4 hours, 2 days a week-not worth it.)

Perfect job for those who want a second job or (first) part-time job!

Best/Easiest Part:
 The discounts are worth it. Anyone who loves clothes, vanity items, and home decor/furniture will enjoy this job. (That’s why I stayed for so long, and coming from a family that couldn’t even afford hair conditioner growing up, it was like Christmas every week seeing the new inventory)

Cleaning the store, hanging clothes on racks, and returning items to their designated places, (talking to customers/in person or on the phone/ will be easy if you have prior experience)

Hardest part: 
Holiday seasons. HUGE influx of customers. Also learning where all stock is located and displayed is tedious at first, but very important to learn if you want to do your job well.

My knee is strained from overexerting myself lifting boxes during stock in the holiday season while understaffed. Make sure you learn how to properly lift boxes and use equipment. 

Talking to customers/in person or on the phone/ will be hard if you have no prior experience and if you are an anxious or non confidant person. (I would know-it took me nearly 6 months to stop crying at minor inconveniences on the job. However, I’m grateful for the opportunity of experience and confidence boost from this job, it made me a better person and employee ready for future employment.)

Between workplace drama, a scary district manager, &&  flaky coworkers ,(the longest they’d stay was about 3 months, always shocked if they had made it longer than that.), it was an interesting experience to say the least. 


The company itself as most companies don't care about the workers. There are several problems I can list off the top of my head but I will keep this short and only name a few pros and cons. 
 
For starters, the store is huge and well managed considering how little staff there is.  The requirement to hound customers to get company credit cards and rewards cards to make the company goal is way over the top.  They require the staff to set up cards regardless of the customers want one or not and gather a bunch of personal information that they don't want to give out. 

The store is way understaffed and the workers work very hard to keep the store up and running, clean and organized with little to no recognition or praise from the big wigs of the company.  When they do hear from the big wigs its just ways we can improve and what we need to be doing better and how we can improve the company. The staff works incredibly hard in many ways  and the customers are VERY happy and let us know which is great.


The atmosphere was nice and the vibe at my store was nice. My coworkers for the most part were wonderful and my store manager was great considering what she had to work with which was very little.  


The hardest part of the job was they expect so much to be done by very few people. Calling the security company WHILE giving descriptions of the suspects even if they were within earshot, WHILE running a register and keeping the line moving. Dealing with the theft was our job even though there were security cameras throughout the building. Sometimes when we called they weren't even working.


The coworkers made it worth the drive out there, the merchandise was random but mostly pretty cool and reasonably priced and I liked the fact that there was ALWAYS something do during my shift  but the company doesn't care one bit about the staff that works so hard to make the location a well oiled machine. Fucc that place. I will never give them another minute of my time or another cent of my money.

Burkes Outlet is my favorite job so far, the company really cares about their employees (just implemented a Love to Work - Love to Shop program, encouraged us to paint our breakrooms walls and make a friendly space for us to relax in, etc.), when I stared working here about a year and a half ago, i came on at $8.50/hr and then went up to $9.00/hr after my 90 days and we get yearly reviews which are opportunities to get yearly raises depending on your performance, now I think new employees come in at $8.75 and go up to $9.25, so the company is always looking at ways to take care of their people. Once you're hired on after 90 days, you can enroll in a 401k savings plan whether you're full or part time, if you're part-time and you stay with Burkes Outlet for a year, you start earning paid time off and you get paid sick days and then once you move up to full-time you get more PTO and you can sign up for life, vision/dental, and health insurance benefits. I am a Supervisor/Shift Leader at my store in Granite Falls NC, it's never too busy to handle except for on discount days, but even then it's manageable. As long as you have a good manager and a good team to work with, it's always fun and everyone knows whats expected of them so the day and the workload goes by quickly. I want to go as far as I can with this company because again, this is the best job i've had so far and the company really takes care of it's people, I was a Cashier for 6 mths when i got promoted to Supervisor and now im hoping to move up to Lead Supervisor so there is always room for advancement depending on whats going on in your store and where your store is located! (I am currently making 10.50/hr as a Supervisor but again I feel like im paid fairly for the amount of work that I do)

I was hired into a new Management Trainee program that was conceptualized to produce a pipeline of experienced managers in the company. I was paired with a fairly new Store Manager operating the highest volume store in the District. The training materials for this program were severely lacking in detail and structure. They provided no clear guideline for a successful training plan. I received a tremendous amount of wisdom and on-the-job training from the Training Store Manager, District Manager, and other Store Managers I had the opportunity to work with. However I discovered the SOPs for the Company are merely wasted words as each level of field and store management seems to interpret and implement the policies and procedures as they choose. I was placed in an ASM position in another District at an even higher volume store with no active SM and a rapidly dwindling staff. I was constantly directed to deviate from standard and effective procedures and break policies that caused confusion and disruption in the store. Most management time is spent re-merchandising to the liking of whichever Field Manager is around that day, or re-tagging merchandise depending on which LP is in because there is no consistency and the Visual and LP guidelines are too vague. 
Resources to do the job being asked if you are far and few between, and the folks in field management and corporate have no idea what it is like to be the only employee in a 20,000 square foot store with 30 customers and no answers or solutions to the issues that occur daily. 
This company drove me away from retail for numerous reasons. I met some great people and had some fun experiences, but this is not a career to be happy at. An overhaul of operations is definitely needed.

During a typical week, I complete markdowns, process freight, open once or twice a week, close three nights a week, complete MOS, complete paper-work, supervise associates, and help customers on the sales floor and at the registers. I have learned a great deal about providing good customer service and being a good leader. I have enjoyed working with most of my co-workers, who make work fun. My manager tries to be friendly and approachable. However, she pushes sales and credit cards way too hard and she has started showing favoritism in the workplace by the way she makes schedules. There are never enough hours in the store because sales are always down. On a busy Friday or Saturday night, only a cashier and I run the store. That means I have to clean the entire store, help the cashier with customers if she gets a long line, put back clothes and other returns if she needs help doing so, and do the closing procedures. Plus, the bathrooms must be cleaned every night and our manager wants us to sweep and spot-mop our departments. This is way too much work for only two people. Our manager does not emphasize with us because she has never had to close on a busy Friday or Saturday night with just her and a cashier. So of course she does not understand how stressed out we are. We also have to play LP in our store because we have so much shoplifting going on. We can call LOCC and they will watch suspicious people for us, but usually we still have to customer service these people anyway. I feel as if this company values its customers, but does not appreciate its employees. This company is all about making their numbers so the ones higher up can get their bonuses. Who cares about the ones lower ranked who actually run these stores?

I worked there for over 5 years and despite getting along with coworkers as well as making several accomplishments within the company I was never promoted. The few small raises I had received were pretty much erased when they raised the base pay per hour for everyone, so I was getting paid the same as new employees when I'd been employed for 5 years, the raises did not carry over.

I've watched very many people be hired on for positions the company could have promoted me or a few others for. There was rarely a promotion from within. My title was sales associate but I had Supervisor responsibilities. Normally a Supervisor would have 1 maybe 2 departments to care for. I had 4 of my own and then I shared 2 others with actual Supervisors (who couldn't do it on their own) on top of me doing the expected Sales Associate duties (customer assistance, Cashier, Cleaning). So instead of moving me to the appropriate position they just had me do the duties I wasn't being paid for. I had the bulk of the work but this happened to a few others who were given smaller responsibilities that also did not fit their title

I left after seeing I wasn't going anywhere within the company for so many years. I couldn't live off of the pay I'd been receiving, and the management was terrible. New management specifically. The last few months were painful to be honest. I was the 5th person within 2 months to leave out of people who'd been working there for over 2 years prior to the new management. I left less than a month ago and 2 others have left since then...so yeah   they are hiring.
