About the Role
The Oakland Housing Authority is hiring Police Officer Recruits—an entry-level, non-sworn role that prepares candidates for a law enforcement career through a California P.O.S.T.-certified Police Academy.
After completing academy training, recruits may be sworn in as probationary Police Officers upon approval.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend and complete a P.O.S.T.-certified Police Academy
- Participate in physical training and defensive tactics
- Learn patrol procedures, criminal law, firearms safety, and emergency response
- Complete written, physical, and scenario-based testing
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least 20.5 years old
- Valid CA Driver’s License
- Eligible for a POST-certified academy
- U.S. citizen or eligible permanent resident
- No felony convictions
- Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred: Bilingual (ASL, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese) or prior police-related experience
Testing Requirements
- PELLETB T-score of 42+ (within 1 year)
- National Testing Network minimum scores required
Physical Requirements
Must pass POST physical test, including:
- Obstacle course
- 165 lb body drag
- 6-ft fence climb
- 500-yard run
Hiring Process
Includes physical test, interview, background check, polygraph, and medical/psychological exams (approx. 90 days).
