About the Role
We are seeking an experienced General Engineer to support the design, construction, and maintenance of a federal healthcare facility. This role applies broad engineering knowledge to complex, high-stakes projects — from initial planning and design through construction oversight and Architect-Engineer (AE) design management. You'll work independently, resolving conflicts between management requirements and engineering principles, and providing professional guidance to peers and subordinate engineers.
This is a senior-level, high-responsibility role suited for an engineer comfortable navigating government construction standards, healthcare facility requirements, and multi-stakeholder coordination.
What You'll Do
- Determine project requirements, conduct reconnaissance and site evaluations, and prepare designs, specifications, and cost estimates
- Apply broad engineering methods and standards to diverse, complex projects, adapting precedents where needed to resolve conflicts between management goals and engineering principles
- Perform or direct surveys and investigations to establish baseline data for design
- Evaluate design objectives and perform complex technical calculations to identify the most economical and efficient project approach
- Review plans, specifications, and designs submitted by subordinate engineers, and provide professional advice and direction for improvements
- Provide project management and oversight of construction or maintenance efforts
- Schedule and lay out construction operations; inspect materials, methods, and equipment
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for project funding and bid evaluation
- Prepare technical reports, correspondence, status reports, and schedules
- Consult with contractors to resolve complex or unforeseen problems during construction
- Prepare or revise sketches, drawings, and specifications, incorporating them into contract documents
- Review and evaluate contractor shop drawings, samples, and materials certifications
- Develop in-house designs and construction documents compliant with building codes and safety standards
- Establish design criteria and scope of work for AE firms; oversee, review, and approve/reject AE design deliverables
- Direct AE firms in preparing change order documents
- Implement and monitor Environment of Care requirements: OSHA/Life Safety Management, hazardous materials handling, emergency preparedness, and security policies
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental requirements
- Demonstrate infection control practices appropriate to a healthcare setting
- Protect sensitive data and files in accordance with the Privacy Act and applicable VA policies
- Communicate professionally and constructively with veterans, staff, contractors, and visitors
