Slater Development & Construction is a family-owned Los Angeles general contractor serving Southern California since 1957. We perform a mix of ground-up construction, custom residential remodels with high-end finish work, commercial tenant improvements and other specialty construction projects.
We are seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent who can take full ownership of field operations and independently run projects from mobilization through completion.
This is not an assistant superintendent or entry-level management position. They will have the experience, judgment and leadership ability to manage subcontractors, maintain the construction schedule, anticipate upcoming needs, solve field problems and communicate with owners, designers, architects, and all other representatives throughout the project.
Primary Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of assigned construction projects.
- Coordinate and supervise subcontractors, vendors, deliveries and field personnel.
- Develop and maintain short-term schedules and two- to three-week look-ahead plans.
- Sequence trades efficiently and ensure that labor, materials and information are available before work begins.
- Read and interpret architectural, structural and MEP plans, specifications and details.
- Ensure that work is performed in accordance with plans, specifications, applicable codes and company quality standards.
- Identify conflicts, missing information and potential change-order conditions before they delay the project.
- Coordinate inspections and maintain permit cards, inspection records and required jobsite documentation.
- Maintain safe, clean, secure and professionally operated jobsites.
- Conduct regular quality-control reviews and create subcontractor correction and punch lists.
- Track daily progress, manpower, deliveries, delays and jobsite conditions.
- Maintain organized daily reports and progress photographs using Buildertrend or a similar construction-management platform.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with company ownership, project managers, clients, architects, engineers, inspectors and subcontractors.
- Help resolve field issues quickly while protecting the project schedule, quality and budget.
- Assist with project closeout, final inspections, punch-list completion and owner turnover.
- Run project meetings and provide accurate, direct updates regarding progress, upcoming decisions and potential problems.
Required Experience
- At least eight years of relevant construction-field experience.
- At least five years of experience as a superintendent or lead field supervisor.
- Demonstrated experience independently running construction projects through completion.
- Strong knowledge of residential and general building construction, including structural work, waterproofing, framing, drywall, finish carpentry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC coordination.
- Ability to read complete construction-document sets and identify conflicts between trades.
- Strong scheduling, organization and subcontractor-management skills.
- Working knowledge of California building requirements and jobsite safety practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both field personnel and sophisticated clients and design professionals.
- Comfortable using smartphones, email, digital plans, daily-reporting systems and construction-management software.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation throughout the Los Angeles area.
- Ability to provide references for projects personally managed as superintendent.
Preferred Experience
- High-end custom residential construction.
- Ground-up home construction.
- Commercial tenant improvements.
- Major residential remodels and additions.
- Occupied-building construction and phased projects.
- Buildertrend or comparable project-management software.
- OSHA training or other recognized safety credentials.
- Spanish-language ability is helpful but not required.
What Success Looks Like
The successful superintendent:
- Plans several weeks ahead rather than reacting to daily emergencies.
- Keeps subcontractors productive and accountable.
- Understands the plans and catches problems before work is installed incorrectly.
- Maintains a clean, safe and organized project.
- Communicates problems early and presents possible solutions.
- Protects the schedule without sacrificing workmanship.
- Can represent Slater Development professionally with clients, architects and inspectors.
- Takes ownership of the result rather than waiting to be told what to do.

- Opportunity for performance-based compensation.
- Paid time off and other benefits.
