SAFETY AND PROTECTIVE SERVICES OFFICER
Hours: Full-Time (40 hours per week)

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for patrons and staff, and appropriately securing library facilities and assets. Serves as primary security response until emergency response unit arrives when situations warrant.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE:
- Ohio Peace Officers Training 120 certification and 6 months experience securing people, property, and information, preferably in a school or urban setting; or
- 2 years’ experience securing people, property, and information in a public sector setting (i.e., school, government building, etc.), preferably in an urban setting; or
- 1 year experience securing people, property, and information in a public library setting.

Experience working with youth preferred.
Certifications: Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Certification. First Aid Certification preferred.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE:
- Ability to accurately analyze situations and quickly make sound judgements/recommendations.
- Ability to relate to diverse and special needs populations in conflict situations.
- Knowledge of safety and security operations, laws, rules, regulations, local, state, and federal laws.
- Read, understand, and communicate information and ideas presented in writing.
- Use mathematics to solve problems.
- General principles and objectives of information technology systems and programs.
- Experience in a public library or public-sector is preferred.
- Basic proficiency in MS Office or similar software is required. Relevant business equipment including the use of basic computer programs and systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluation of this position is based primarily on performance of the following essential functions, which include, but are not limited to:

Patrol library properties (on foot and/or in vehicle) to maintain order, promote a welcoming environment, and enforce regulations. Assure the safety and security of patrons and staff. Observe and report any potential problems in and around the building.
- Communicate with staff; aid and direct patrons.
- Respond to inappropriate patron behavior. Enforce Patron Code of Conduct. Monitor the removal of library service materials and ensure that materials have been checked out properly.
- Serve as first responder in case of emergency and direct Cleveland emergency personnel as needed.
- Control pedestrian and vehicle ingress and egress to and from library buildings.
- Secure buildings after business hours including conducting checks of every floor to assure patrons and staff have exited the building.
- Monitor fire and safety equipment, including, but not limited to, cameras, extinguishers, locks, alarms, panic buttons, etc. Respond to alarms and other incidents. Participate in safety drills.
- Use word-processing, database, and spreadsheet software in the course of assigned duties.
- Gather information, compile reports, maintain office records/forms and filing system.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of events.
- Operate standard office equipment including a computer, calculator, fax machine, copier, printer, and other related equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Walk up and down steps, walk in rough terrains, walk long distances.
- Push and pull up to 100 pounds. Lift a minimum of 30 pounds and carry them short distances 20 feet or less.
- Properly wear issued protective gear weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to be exposed to a wide variety of outdoor and indoor environmental conditions, including extreme weather, hazards, and/or confined or restricted working environment.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
