This is a full-time position working on a 40' commercial vessel as a deckhand servicing other commercial vessels on the Delaware River. The vessel operates from various ports on the Delaware River between the C&D Canal and Philadelphia. The deckhand is required to perform engineering and housekeeping duties. Deckhands work hard and get dirty each shift.
Candidates must be nimble and physically fit. You will be required to repeatedly lift 80 pound cargo without assistance. You will be required to throw a 2" twisted line 50' from a pitching vessel and lasso a bollard or cleat on another pitching vessel. Swimming, balance, cleanliness, and prior experience as a commercial deckhand required.
The deckhand assists the captain in docking, departing, and navigation to and from port. The deckhand is responsible for the continuing care and preventive maintenance of all engines, generators and other shipboard equipment. The deckhand will also scrub decks and clean and sanitize the cabin of the vessel to maintain a high state of appearance and cleanliness. The captain will assign the deckhand additional responsibilities for safety drills and daily workload.
Deckhands work 12-hour shifts. The vessels operate both a day shift and a night shift. Candidates may request their shift schedule and the number of shifts per week. Over time is encouraged. There are no live aboard accommodations on the vessel. Deckhands are required to depart the vessel when not on shift.
USCG pre-employment and ongoing random drug screenings are required.
