Travelling MEP Superintendent – Data Center Construction
Position Summary:
The Traveling MEP Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection (MEPF), and Building Management Systems (BMS) activities on mission-critical data center construction projects across multiple locations. Working as part of a General Contractor's field leadership team, this role ensures that all MEP systems are installed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, quality standards, and schedule requirements.
The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience delivering large-scale hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data center projects and demonstrates strong leadership in managing trade partners, commissioning activities, and owner expectations throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Execution & Field Leadership
- Lead and coordinate all MEP field operations from preconstruction through commissioning and turnover.
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Construction Managers, and trade contractors to develop and maintain project schedules.
- Monitor installation progress and proactively identify schedule impacts, conflicts, and recovery strategies.
- Ensure all MEP work complies with contract documents, specifications, local codes, and industry standards.
- Coordinate equipment deliveries, material management, and installation sequencing.
Data Center & Mission-Critical Systems Oversight:
- Manage installation and integration of critical systems including:
- Medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems
- Generators and paralleling switchgear
- UPS systems and battery backup infrastructure
- Chillers, CRAHs, CRACs, and cooling systems
- Fuel oil systems
- Fire alarm and fire protection systems
- Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS)
- EPMS and monitoring systems
- Verify system readiness for startup, testing, commissioning, and integrated systems testing (IST).
Trade Partner Management:
- Direct and coordinate MEP subcontractors to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Conduct daily coordination meetings and weekly planning sessions.
- Review manpower levels and productivity metrics.
- Resolve field conflicts among trades and facilitate effective communication between stakeholders.
Quality Control & Safety:
- Enforce company safety policies and maintain a zero-incident culture.
- Participate in safety audits, toolbox talks, and site inspections.
- Verify installation quality through inspections, punch walks, and deficiency tracking.
- Ensure all MEP installations meet quality standards and commissioning requirements.
Commissioning & Turnover:
- Support commissioning agents and owner representatives during startup and testing activities.
- Track completion of pre-functional and functional testing requirements.
- Manage punch list resolution and turnover documentation.
- Coordinate final owner training and system handover.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate daily reports and progress updates.
- Review shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, and field coordination drawings.
- Track commissioning milestones and closeout deliverables.
- Provide regular updates to project leadership regarding schedule, cost impacts, risks, and opportunities.
Qualifications Required:
- 8+ years of construction experience with at least 5 years in an MEP Superintendent or similar field leadership role.
- Proven experience working for a General Contractor on mission-critical or data center construction projects.
- Experience delivering large-scale hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data center facilities.
- Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems installation, startup, and commissioning.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
- Experience managing multiple MEP subcontractors simultaneously.
- Proficiency with construction management software and scheduling tools.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively (up to 100%) throughout the United States or assigned regions.
Preferred:
- Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Experience with BIM/VDC coordination processes.
- Knowledge of commissioning procedures and integrated systems testing.
- Experience with major data center clients such as hyperscale cloud providers, colocation developers, or enterprise operators.
