Our firm is a litigation-driven office with a practice focused on family, criminal, and immigration law. Many of our cases involve overlapping legal issues across more than one area of law, requiring attorneys to think strategically and understand how one proceeding can directly affect another. Immigration matters in particular often turn on a client's criminal history, family relationships, and prior filings, so we value attorneys who can spot how a state-court disposition or a prior application reshapes the immigration case. The Immigration Attorney will manage an immigration caseload from start to finish, including removal-defense proceedings in immigration court, affirmative filings with USCIS, consular processing, client communication, drafting applications and pleadings, developing the evidentiary record, and preparing matters for hearing, interview, or trial. The ideal candidate is someone who can work independently, think strategically, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload involving removal defense in immigration court (EOIR), asylum, withholding of removal, and CAT, cancellation of removal, adjustment of status, family-based petitions, inadmissibility and unlawful-presence waivers, U and T visas, VAWA, naturalization, and related affirmative and defensive matters
- Draft applications, petitions, motions, briefs, declarations, waiver packets, country-conditions submissions, RFE and NOID responses, BIA appeals, and supporting cover letters and exhibit indexes
- Represent clients at master calendar and individual hearings, USCIS and asylum-office interviews, bond hearings, and consular and NVC matters
- Conduct legal research on the INA, 8 CFR, BIA and circuit precedent, and prepare persuasive written arguments
- Communicate with clients regularly regarding case strategy, developments, deadlines, and expectations
- Negotiate and coordinate with DHS / ICE Office of the Principal Legal Advisor, USCIS, and opposing or co-counsel where applicable
- Analyze the immigration consequences of criminal history and coordinate with criminal counsel on certified dispositions and post-conviction relief
- Review and analyze FOIA productions, prior filings, foreign documents and translations, and evidentiary materials, and reconcile them against the client's account
- Work collaboratively with paralegals, support staff, and firm leadership to move cases efficiently
- Maintain accurate case notes, deadlines, and litigation strategy within the firm's case management systems, including USCIS, EOIR, BIA, NVC, and consular calendaring
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Licensed and in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction (Illinois preferred)
- Experience in Immigration law, including removal defense before EOIR
- Strong courtroom and interview presence and litigation skills
- Strong legal writing, drafting, and advocacy ability
- Working knowledge of the INA, 8 CFR, USCIS and EOIR practice, and the immigration consequences of criminal conduct
- Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines in a high-volume environment
- Excellent communication and client management skills
- Organized, proactive, and able to exercise sound judgment independently
- Bilingual [English/Spanish] is a plus, but not required
Pay: $85,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
