The road to becoming a substitute
-
In order to be a substitute in the district a candidate must have minimally a high school diploma.
- Candidates interested in becoming a substitute must be eligible and obtain a Maine Department of Education C.H.R.C fingerprint certificate. The certificate when issued is valid for 5 years unless notified otherwise. This is a two-step process with candidate registering on line to have prints taken at a local facility and then submitting the MDOE initial application via their portal to meet initial requirements. (Please request the MDOE account set up and instructions for submitting initial application)
-
As a substitute in a Maine school district you have the option of enrolling in the Maine Public Employee Retirement System (7.65% contribution). This is a one time opt in/out option for each district. You are able to earn service credit hours for subbing. Please note the below exception to service credit hours.
-
Although MainePERS has a "Y" code (Y0209) for substitute teachers and ed techs (II and III), payroll service credit does not include subbing for Ed Tech I's. In the district, the payroll service credit practice has been the same as MainePERS.
