As a Genetic Counselor II, you will deliver comprehensive genetic counseling services to patients and families in accordance with established professional practice guidelines. Clinical responsibilities are generally centered in an assigned practice area, with flexibility to provide clinical coverage across other practice areas based on departmental and organizational needs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.
- Demonstrates knowledge, competency skills and intervention techniques in GC clinical services.
- Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.
- Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.
- Interacts and communicates regularly with the medical geneticist(s) and/or other supervising physician(s).
- Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician.
- Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.
- Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.
- Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.
- Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care.
- Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field.
- Provides case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.
- Contributes to quality/development of clinical services, participates in specialty sections, and coordinates specific services or specific projects.
- Actively participates in outreach, education, and training activities.
Department-Specific Responsibilities:
- Provides comprehensive genetic counseling services for programs in the Center for Genomic Medicine, as assigned, which may include adult and pediatric patients in general and subspecialty clinics.
Education, Experience & Licenses/Certifications:
- Masters Degree in Genetic Counseling required.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in genetic counseling and competent in all genetic counselor core functions required.
- American Board Genetic Counselor (ABGC) Certification required upon hire. ABMG Certified Counselors (prior to 1991 may still be considered).
- California Genetic Counseling License (Full or temporary) required upon hire.
- Experience in adult genetics and/or pediatric genetics is preferred.
