Overview
MC Metal Inc. is seeking a dependable, organized, and detail-oriented Structural Steel Project Manager to manage steel fabrication and installation projects from contract award through final completion.
This position is specifically focused on coordinating the scheduling of fabrication, delivery, and field installation of structural steel and miscellaneous-metal work. Projects may include structural framing, columns, beams, stairs, railings, ladders, platforms, canopies, embeds, gates, and other custom-fabricated metal components.
The Project Manager will work closely with customers, general contractors, engineers, detailers, suppliers, shop employees, and field installation crews to ensure that materials are ordered correctly, drawings are approved, steel is fabricated accurately, and installations are completed safely and on schedule.
The ideal candidate has experience in construction, metal fabrication, or construction project management; communicates openly and clearly; follows up consistently; and can identify drawing, material, or fabrication problems before they cause delays or additional costs.
Responsibilities
- Manage structural-steel and miscellaneous-metal projects from award through fabrication, installation, punch-list completion, and closeout.
- Review project contracts, scopes of work, architectural drawings, structural drawings, specifications, addenda, and approved shop drawings.
- Confirm the company’s scope, exclusions, material requirements, finishes, delivery responsibilities, and installation requirements.
- Coordinate shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, engineering questions, field dimensions, and drawing revisions.
- Review approved shop drawings and communicate all revisions, field conditions, and fabrication requirements to the shop and installation teams.
- Coordinate with steel detailers, engineers, general contractors, customers, inspectors, suppliers, subcontractors, shop employees, and field crews.
- Prepare or review material takeoffs for structural steel, HSS tubing, plate, angles, channels, decking, stairs, railings, hardware, fasteners, and other fabrication materials.
- Request supplier pricing, verify material availability and lead times, and place material orders.
- Confirm material sizes, grades, thicknesses, finishes, quantities, domestic-material requirements, and delivery dates before ordering.
- Coordinate fabrication schedules with the shop foreman and assign priorities based on approved drawings, material availability, and installation dates.
- Manage fabrication and installation teams by assigning work, monitoring progress, and confirming that work meets project requirements.
- Review fabricated steel and metal components for dimensions, quantities, materials, welds, bolt holes, finishes, and general workmanship.
- Identify fabrication errors, missing materials, drawing conflicts, and dimensional discrepancies and coordinate corrections before delivery.
- Schedule steel deliveries, installation crews, equipment, cranes, lifts, access, and jobsite activities.
- Confirm that fabricated materials, hardware, approved drawings, and required equipment are ready before installation begins.
- Visit jobsites as needed to take measurements, review existing conditions, coordinate installation sequencing, and resolve field conflicts.
- Monitor field installation progress and coordinate corrections, additional materials, and punch-list work.
- Track project schedules, material costs, labor requirements, subcontractor costs, and project deadlines.
- Identify work outside the original contract scope and prepare supporting information for change-order requests.
- Document customer instructions, field conditions, delays, revisions, additional work, and cost impacts.
- Review and prepare project correspondence, purchase orders, RFIs, submittals, change orders, delivery records, and project documentation.
- Provide regular project-status updates to company management, customers, shop employees, and field crews.
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience managing structural-steel, miscellaneous-metal, welding, fabrication, or commercial construction projects.
- Experience managing fabrication-shop employees and field-installation crews.
- Strong ability to read and understand architectural, structural, and steel shop drawings.
- Familiarity with structural-steel shapes, HSS tubing, plate, angles, channels, stairs, railings, embeds, hardware, fasteners, welds, and metal finishes.
- Ability to review dimensions, elevations, material specifications, connection details, welding information, and installation requirements.
- Experience coordinating shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, material purchasing, fabrication schedules, deliveries, and field installation.
- Strong knowledge of project scheduling, cost tracking, change orders, quality control, and project documentation.
- Experience with construction and project-management software such as Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, AutoCAD, or similar programs.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new project-management software.
- Excellent organizational, leadership, time-management, and follow-up skills.
- Ability to manage multiple steel projects, material orders, fabrication schedules, and installation deadlines simultaneously.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with customers, general contractors, engineers, suppliers, shop employees, and field crews.
- Comfortable working in an office, active fabrication shop, and construction-jobsite environment.
- A valid driver’s license
- At least one year of construction & project management experience is preferred. Additional structural-steel or metal-fabrication experience will receive strong consideration.
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Occasional early mornings, overtime, jobsite visits, or schedule adjustments may be required based on fabrication deadlines, deliveries, and field-installation needs.
Language Qualifications
The ability to speak Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese is a major plus and will be given strong consideration because the position involves regular communication with shop employees, field crews, suppliers, and vendors.
Additional language skills are strongly preferred but are not required.
Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
