Position/Title: Senior Accountant

Purpose of the Position:
The Senior Accountant provides high-level accounting oversight, financial review, audit support, and nonprofit accounting guidance for The Refuge Center for Counseling. This role supports the organization’s financial integrity by assisting with month-end review processes, reconciliations, audit readiness, internal controls, nonprofit compliance, and financial reporting support.
The Senior Accountant helps ensure financial records are accurate, organized, compliant, and aligned with nonprofit accounting standards and organizational best practices. This position serves as a strategic accounting resource while supporting efficient and sustainable financial operations across the organization.
Specific Duties
Financial Analysis & Reporting
- Review monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness
- Review and complete journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes as required
- Analyze financial reports, trends, variances, and unusual activity and communicate findings
- Support accurate classification of restricted and unrestricted funds and nonprofit functional expense allocations
- Provide financial guidance and accounting support to leadership as needed
Audit Support & Compliance
- Assist with annual audit preparation, schedules, and supporting documentation
- Serve as a liaison with external auditors, accounting partners, and financial consultants as needed
- Support adherence to GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal financial policies and procedures
- Assist in monitoring compliance related to grants, donor restrictions, and annual financial reporting requirements
- Help maintain organized and audit-ready accounting documentation and backup
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Review accounting processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, accuracy, and internal controls
- Assist in developing and maintaining financial procedures and documentation practices as needed
- Support implementation of best practices for nonprofit accounting operations and reporting
- Provide oversight and guidance related to reconciliations, coding, and accounting workflows
- Assist leadership in strengthening financial systems and reducing operational financial risk
Other Duties
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the mission, vision, and operations of The Refuge Center for Counseling
QUALIFICATIONS
- CPA preferred (active or retired strongly encouraged)
- Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience with nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
- Experience with QuickBooks Online preferred
- Strong understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and financial reporting practices
