Position Summary
The Comfort & Care Counselor provides outpatient, community-based counseling services to children, adolescents, and their families affected by childhood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. This role delivers trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate therapeutic services using play therapy and creative arts modalities in both office-based and home/community-based settings.
The Counselor is responsible not only for direct clinical services, but also for active outreach to patients and families to support access to care, increase utilization of services, and manage an appropriate clinical workload. This position functions as part of an interdisciplinary care team and supports AHRA’s integrated model of compassionate, family-centered care.

Our goal is to provide an integrated health care program that will support children and their families battling cancer by providing an integrated program of compassionate and accessible services and therapies in an atmosphere of respect and dignity. Position Duties
- Clinical Services & Patient Care
- Conduct psychosocial assessments and provide individual and family counseling services for pediatric patients and their caregivers.
Patient Outreach & Caseload Development
- Proactively conduct outreach to referred patients and families to introduce services, assess needs, and schedule consultations and intakes.
- Follow up with inactive or waitlisted families to maintain engagement and support continuity of care.
- Collaborate with internal staff and referral partners to identify new patients and ensure timely access to counseling services.
- Maintain an active caseload consistent with program needs and organizational expectations.
- Proactively builds relationships with hospitals and community partners to develop and maintain a robust caseload of children and families (20-25 for part time work).
Intake, Coordination & Referrals
- Review service applications and conduct initial phone consultations with families.
- Schedule intake appointments and coordinate services with internal programs and external referral partners.
- Make referrals to outside counseling agencies or community resources when services fall outside program scope.
- Communicate relevant clinical recommendations to appropriate healthcare and support professionals involved in the child’s care.
Documentation, Compliance & Quality
- Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation in accordance with Joint Commission and CARF standards.
- Participate in Total Quality Management and quality improvement activities as required.
- Ensure families receive clear, accurate, and complete information to support informed participation in care and decision-making.
- Deliver therapeutic services using play therapy, expressive arts, and developmentally appropriate interventions.
- Provide counseling services in the Comfort & Care Center, through Amanda Hope on the Go! mobile counseling vans, and in home-based or community settings as appropriate.
- Develop individualized treatment plans with age-appropriate goals, measurable objectives, and defined timeframes in collaboration with families.
- Ensure children’s needs remain central to care while recognizing the family as an essential member of the treatment team.
- Support patients and families navigating serious and life-limiting illnesses by gathering relevant psychosocial information and providing emotional support.
Position Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of internship clinical experience in social work, counseling, family therapy, or a related field within a healthcare, outpatient, or home-based setting preferred.
- Pediatric and family systems experience strongly preferred.
Certification/License/Registry Requirements
- Active Arizona licensure through AZBBHE, including but not limited to:
o Licensed Master or Clinical Social Worker (LMSW, LCSW)
o Licensed Associate or Professional Counselor (LAC, LPC)
o Licensed Associate or Independent Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT, LMFT)
o Current Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card prior to start date.
Skill Requirements
- Demonstrated experience working with children and families experiencing medical trauma.
- Proficiency with computers and standard office software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.

Pay: $30.00 - $45.00 per hour
