THE POSITION: FIELD SALES REPRESENTATIVE
Position Description:
The Field Sales Representative is responsible for maintaining and growing sales within an assigned geography by building strong relationships with customers, ensuring ongoing service, and driving business development. This role operates with a high level of autonomy and discretion in managing customer interactions, scheduling work, and driving results.
Position Requirements:
Customer Management & Sales Growth
- Maintain relationships with existing customers and drive new business development.
- Ensure consistent sales activity to meet or exceed year-over-year sales goals.
- Visit customers in person, maintaining a strong presence in the field.
- Ensure orders are placed and fulfilled based on customer needs.
- Encourage and assist customers with using the company’s self-service ordering and payment portal.
Order Solicitation & Processing
- Solicit and write orders for customers, as necessary, ensuring order accuracy.
- Ensure orders are submitted within required timelines.
- Guide customers on appropriate trade class assignments based on purchase volume.
- Make pricing recommendations within established trade class structures.
Payment Collection & Deposit Responsibilities
- Collect customer payments (cash, check, etc.) and ensure they are deposited within 24-48 hours.
- Provide payment receipts and maintain accurate records.
- Encourage customers to transition to online payment processing where applicable.
Account Growth & Strategy
- Manage assigned accounts, ZIP codes, and/or geographies with a focus on maintaining and increasing sales.
- Utilize market knowledge and discretion to optimize customer engagement strategies.
- Identify opportunities for upselling and expanding product placement.
- Collaborate with management to adjust customer classifications where appropriate.
Discretion & Autonomy in Work Schedule
- Independently determine daily working hours, routes, and strategies to service customers effectively.
- Manage personal work schedule in accordance with company expectations for customer service and order deadlines.
- Attend monthly sales meetings at the corporate office.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Prior sales experience preferred, especially in wholesale grocery, consumer packaged goods, or B2B sales.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and drive results.
- Comfort with handling cash transactions and deposits.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for daily travel.

Exemption Justification – Outside Sales Exemption
This role qualifies as exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and New York State labor laws based on the following criteria:
- Primary duty is sales – The representative’s primary responsibility is soliciting and maintaining business relationships to drive sales.
- Work performed outside the office – The representative works primarily in the field, meeting with customers at their business locations.
- Independent work schedule – The representative controls their schedule, working autonomously to meet customer needs.
- Commission-based earnings – Compensation is 100% commission-based, with performance incentives.
