Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is an ELCA congregation in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Our community of faith serves thousands of members, our neighborhood and local and global ministries. We are seeking a full-time Building Supervisor to oversee the maintenance and care of our building and property. The person in this role manages church facilities including building and equipment maintenance, repairs, event setup, our open & closing schedule, and building security, as well as leadership and oversight of custodial staff. Anticipated hours are Monday through Friday with a mix of daytime and evening shifts.
The Building Supervisor oversees four primary areas:
Facility Operations
- Responsible for ensuring the building is securely opened, closed, and staffed with a custodian during building hours and events.
- Maintains building security and serves as primary contact for alarm and fire system 24/7; alerts staff to system issues and takes proactive steps to solve them.
- Operates and maintains church heating and air-conditioning systems, including boiler chemistry.
- Attends weekly Staff Meeting and monthly Facilities Committee Meeting; captures and acts on building-related priorities.
- Calmly and quickly responds to building emergencies, even if not present. If unable to be on-site, communicates with Director of Operations, Senior Pastor, or other appropriate staff to identify an emergency contact.
- Stays on top of events calendar and manages room set up and on-site event support as needed (weddings, funerals, etc.)
- Proactively communicates by phone, email, and text on facility issues that impact the staff and congregation.
Custodial Team Management
- Supervises custodial staff by providing regular direction, feedback, performance reviews, and disciplinary action if needed.
- Oversees cleaning program and orders all supplies; responds to staff and congregational cleaning requests in a timely and helpful manner.
- Manages custodial task lists and standards; provides back-up cleaning support during team illness or vacation.
Property Repairs & Maintenance
- Logs and performs minor electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs.
- Documents and updates seasonal maintenance schedule for church and property.
- Makes recommendations regarding maintenance strategies and relevant purchases with the Director of Operations and Facilities Committee.
- Walks building and property regularly to identify issues and creates a plan for addressing them.
Vendor Management
- Obtains proposals for snow removal, lawn care, and other vendor-related projects for presentation to Facilities Committee and review with Director of Operations.
- Schedules and meets contractors for building repairs.
Required Qualifications
Technical Experience
- Three to five years of professional facilities maintenance experience
- Generally handy and skilled in minor mechanical, plumbing, and electrical repair
- Experience with floor maintenance and floor cleaning equipment
- Current Boiler 2 license or the ability to obtain it within a year of hire
Communication & People Skills
- Highly responsive and proactive communicator; able to clearly communicate issues, needs & expectations
- Strong organizational skills and the drive to complete tasks without prompting
- Comfort with a PC including use of Microsoft Outlook and Word
- Skilled in regular email, phone and text communication
- Personable and friendly; willing to support staff, members, and building users as requested
- Previous supervisory experience
- Positive leadership style; able to create a warm & collaborative culture among custodial and program staff.
Other Key Qualities
- An eye for detail—you notice and ask questions when something doesn’t look right and take action to fix it
- Reliable and trustworthy; keeps commitments, shows up on time, and holds others accountable
- Must be able to provide three professional references and pass a background check for employment. This role requires proficiency in English, reliable transportation year-round (we are on the bus line), and a working phone for after-hours email and text communication.
