Radiation Protection Manager

Position Summary
As Radiation Protection Manager, this position provides leadership and strategic oversight of the company’s radiation safety, radioactive materials licensing, and regulatory compliance programs across all sites and operations. Serving as the company’s principal Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and primary regulatory compliance liaison, the Radiation Protection Manager directs the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of radiation protection policies and programs; ensures full compliance with company policies as well as state and federal regulations; leads and develops a team of radiation protection professionals; and advises senior management on all matters related to radiation safety, licensing, and environmental compliance. This critical leadership role is essential to enabling safe, compliant, and efficient uranium recovery operations across Subatomic Industries Corp.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides oversight and strategic direction for the company’s Radioactive Materials License and radiation protection regulatory compliance programs across all sites and operations.
- Serves as the company’s designated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and primary regulatory compliance liaison for all Radioactive Materials Licenses.
- Assists the Vice President of Permitting & Regulatory Affairs in representing the company before state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Directs the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of company radiation protection policies and programs to ensure full compliance with internal standards and all applicable state and federal regulations.
- Leads preparation, submission, and technical defense of Radioactive Material License applications, amendments, and renewals.
- Establishes and manages Hazardous Materials transportation policies and ensures full organizational compliance.
- Oversees preparation, review, submission, and tracking of all Annual Environmental Monitoring and ALARA reports.
- Directs and coordinates internal teams and external consultants to compile data and documentation for licensing and regulatory filings.
- Oversees planning and execution of all site decommissioning activities.
- Maintains expert-level knowledge of evolving NRC, Agreement State, and other regulatory requirements related to radiation protection and evaluates their impact on company operations.
- Develops and delivers internal radiation safety procedures and training programs.
- Maintains organized, audit-ready records of license correspondence and compliance documentation.
- Leads, mentors, and provides technical training and guidance to radiation protection staff on uranium health physics principles.
- Builds, leads, and develops a high-performing radiation protection team through staffing, performance management, and professional development.
- Serves as the senior escalation point for radiation safety incidents, conducting or overseeing investigations, root-cause analyses, and corrective action programs.
- Establishes radiation protection related goals, manages program budgets, and drives continuous improvement initiatives.
- Prepares and presents regular performance reports on licensing, compliance, and radiation protection to senior leadership.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in health physics, radiation safety, physical sciences, nuclear engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Demonstrated experience serving as a named Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) on a Radioactive Materials License.
- Proven success managing Radioactive Materials License applications, amendments, renewals, and regulatory interactions.
Preferred Experience
- Direct work with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Agreement State agencies.
- Background in uranium recovery / in-situ recovery operations. Supervisory experience, preferred.
- Experience with drilling and logging operations.
Required Skills & Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of 10 CFR, ALARA principles, environmental monitoring, and decommissioning requirements.
- Strong leadership, team-building, and personnel development skills.
- Excellent strategic planning, program management, budgeting, and communication skills (written, verbal, and executive-level).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license with clean driving record.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work requires extensive travel to sites.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Ability to work with minimal or no supervision.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders as the job requires.
- Ability to bend and kneel to access work areas as required.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment as required.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions, including outdoors.
