SUMMARY
The Perioperative Registered Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients throughout the perioperative continuum including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-anesthesia care. This role supports a safe, efficient, and patient-centered surgical environment in alignment with physician orders, facility policies, and regulatory standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide nursing care to surgical patients in pre-operative, intra-operative, and PACU settings.
- Plan, prioritize, and coordinate patient care needs throughout the surgical process.
- Prepare operating rooms, including setup of instrumentation and surgical supplies.
- Assist physicians during surgical procedures as appropriate.
- Perform accurate surgical counts and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Document nursing activities in accordance with facility policies and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrate and maintain aseptic technique and infection control standards.
- Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
- Serve as a clinical resource for complex decision-making and individualized care planning.
- Foster teamwork and effective communication among clinical staff.
- Adhere to Universal Protocol, Patient Bill of Rights, and Joint Commission standards.
- Seek guidance and escalate concerns appropriately when patient safety issues arise.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to provide safe, high-quality nursing care to surgical patients in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-anesthesia (PACU) settings
- Ability to assess patient condition, identify clinical priorities, and respond appropriately to changes in patient status
- Strong critical-thinking and clinical decision-making skills
- Ability to follow physician orders, facility protocols, and regulatory standards
- Ability to perform perioperative nursing functions, including patient preparation, monitoring, documentation, and recovery care
- Ability to maintain aseptic technique and adhere to infection control standards
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced surgical environment
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and patient safety standards
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program required
- Current experience in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) and/or operating room preferred
- Minimum of one (1) year of perioperative, OR, or surgical nursing experience preferred
- Ophthalmology experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California required
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required
