Position: Farm Coordinator & In-Residence
Overview:
Nestled within the sprawling horse farms of Central Kentucky lies a 50 year-old castle on a hill with sweeping views of 110 acres of farmland wherever one might look or explore. The Kentucky Castle is truly a unique property that draws many to experience its architectural beauty, mystery and landscape.
The Kentucky Castle resides on a small working farm - growing and expanding guests' stay and experiences. We operate a well maintained property that strives to care for its staff, land, guests and animals. To excel in this position, this candidate must display a desire and understanding about working on a farm with farm animals and horticulture. This candidate must also display an understanding of what it means to be empathetically hospitable as well as committed to creating special memories and experiences for guests as it pertains to The Kentucky Castle’s mission, vision, core values and standard operating procedures. Additionally, this candidate must display a level of professionalism, a warm and kind demeanor and an ability to be a consistent and reliable team player.
Onsite housing is included as part of this employment opportunity and compensation.
Supervision: Reports to the General Manager
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts Daily Farm Chores and basic animal care for goats and chickens (including feeding and any basic medicine distribution) for The Teaching Garden Manager
- Oversees daily duties for The Teaching Garden management: produce (seed selection, planting, harvesting, delivery to Castle Farms Restaurant and Kitchen, CSA management, operating equipment, composting)
- Participates in training, mentoring and supervising student employees and volunteers who perform essential farm duties (e.g. Locust Trace Student partnership and Leestown Middle School Summer Program)
- Oversees floral arrangement and deliveries to key property departments (spa, hotel, events)
- Oversees, manages and executes seasonal Goat Yoga
- Oversees and maintains appearance for key guest facing areas: Goat paddocks, Garden Greenhouse and The Teaching Garden
- Oversees TKC Lavender health and wellbeing
- Assists in Farm and Garden events
- Conducts nightly walk-through of Farm property. Reports to the appropriate department any concerns or issues that are not able to be addressed or resolved.
- Acts as night watch as needed for animals (birthing, sick, etc.) and manages nightly property duties
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with TKC departments and managers
KEY JOB DUTIES
- Basic daily animal, garden and watering chores (3-4 hours daily)
- Manage the high tunnel production
- Daily in season garden maintenance and harvest for Castle Farm restaurant and CSA pickups twice per week
- Assist in daily care of goats and chickens
- Oversee daily delivery of eggs to The Kentucky Castle kitchen
- Help teach and facilitate Leestown Middle School summer program
- Facilitate and assist guests and yoga instructors with seasonal goat yoga on the farm
- Assist and oversee with any duties in the Locust Trace on property school partnership
- Ability to follow instructions and give medications to animals occasionally
- Assist Executive Chef and Events Chef as needed in the on-site production garden care, maintenance, and management
- Assist in lavender plantings, maintenance, care and expansion
KEY REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Must arrive on time, ready, in uniform and prepared for the day
- Farm equipment experience is strongly preferred.
- Proficient in how to safely operate standard farm and garden equipment.
- Organized and able to prioritize a full and diverse workload, take initiative and be proactive at completing tasks.
- Solutions-oriented approach to solving problems.
- Professionally mature with strong interpersonal skills.
- Willing to keep an open mind to ideas and inputs while actively contributing.
- Willing to work in a variety of weather conditions and able to lift 50+ pounds when needed.
- Maintain eye contact when addressing external and internal guests
- Handle guests’ questions and concerns professionally and courteously
- Able to work independently and enjoy working in teams.
- Able to effectively communicate.
- Able to cope with the physical needs of the job and enjoy outdoor work, despite adverse weather conditions.
- Must uphold policy and standards for In-residence duties
- Must be able to work 8 hour shifts.
- Must have no criminal history, a non-smoker on property, resume/references required.
This is a highly physical role. While performing these job duties, this candidate is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand for long periods of time (e.g., up to 8 hours or longer). The candidate is required to use dominant hand coordination for simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation. The employee is also required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, and reach above shoulder level. The employee may be exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, dampness, moving machinery, food allergens, and cleaning agents. This Position is Full Time
Pay: $42,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
