Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Full Time Shelter Advocate to join our team in providing vital support and services to individuals experiencing homelessness and those from underserved communities. In this role, you will serve as a frontline resource, ensuring residents receive respectful, comprehensive care while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. Your energy, empathy, and proactive approach will help empower residents on their journey toward stability and independence. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference daily, working with diverse populations including youth, families, and individuals with behavioral health or substance use challenges.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct support to shelter residents, assisting with intake procedures, case management, and ongoing needs assessments.
- Ensure resident confidentiality while documenting interactions accurately using data entry and filing systems.
- Support residents with behavioral health needs by applying de-escalation techniques and conflict management strategies.
- Assist with medication administration, first aid, CPR, and manual handling to ensure safety during emergencies or routine care.
- Collaborate with social workers, addiction counselors, mental health professionals, and other community partners to coordinate services.
- Conduct security checks and monitor the shelter environment to maintain safety for all residents and staff.
- Facilitate resident engagement in activities that promote life skills development, including working with youth and families.
Skills
- Supervising experience in shelter or community settings with high-risk populations.
- Strong communication skills for effective client interaction and documentation.
- Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or behavioral health challenges.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for data collection, reporting, and case documentation.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, de-escalation methods, and conflict management strategies.
- Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse communities and underserved populations.
- Certification in first aid, CPR, medication administration, and manual handling preferred.
- Skilled in working with families and youth to support their unique needs within the shelter environment.
